Hello, Just a quick note to let you know that I will be playing this Wednesday, March 10 @ 9pm at CBGB in New York City. This will be a solo show....(the same kind of show that I've played for the past year in Europe). Most of the set will be songs from my new album.....(that I just finished recording). Presently, It's not available for sale....but will be soon. I'm very excited about this album. The theme is the 10 Commandments, with each song addressing a different commandment....but with an argument to try to convince you to break it...ie. why it might be a good idea to lie, or steal. It might be a dark subject...but hopefully it comes across with a great deal of fun. Surprisingly, the theme seems to have become very timely in the United States. The first song on the album, "No Other God", is a duet with Brian Molko, of Placebo. I am so pleased this collaboration. I can't wait for you to hear it. I am a huge fan of Placebo, and of Brian's voice...and now I'm a huge fan of him. I just adore him. In the next couple of months, I'll be playing some more shows in NYC, as well as 4 St. Louis shows (toward the beginning of April). I'll also be playing a show at the Underworld in London during this time period. Shows in other cities are also in the works...so...I'll write again soon with that info. These shows will perhaps be band shows. anna maria __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! "Maps" is the only song that moves me, but all of the music jerks about with dark melodies, strong percussion, american myths and the stamp of the singer's mighty personality. Electro-magnetic blues - Paul the Girl Another album from a striking personality. The curious collection of instruments (growling strings, theatrical percussion, interesting guitar noises) creates a carnivalesque atmosphere. Often the noises and words are more interesting to me than the melodies, a couple of which even irritate me. Musical theatre? I can see why she'd be compelling live. The simple "Don't you know yet who I am" throttles along with crunchy rock guitar, a cow-punk tune with a chorus that I keep on expecting to go off in the direction of a certain Stones song. Fascinating stuff, and not less so with each listen. Thanks, Jason. Departure - Carla Werner Gentle guitar songs with a fluttering voice, shelved in alt.country at my local store, but only because that's where they put pop music for grown-ups. Werner's easy way of singing - gliding across her melodies - gives the album a charming lazy feeling. There are many catchy tunes, maybe nothing sharp enough for a hit, though 'Wanderlust', 'Heaven is a word' and 'Make it up' could do it. The songs that diverge are refreshing - - 'Departure' has uncommonly crunchy guitars to go with her soaring voice, and atmospheric closer 'Iodine red' features a middle eastern touch to her wail, alongside guitar-sounds similar to whale calls. Whenever I listen to "Departure", I'm amazed by how good and accomplished and nice it is. I wouldn't react like that if I really really liked it - I've got some distance from it. Thanks to the person who mentioned it. Old low light - Kathryn Williams Sketchy instruments, an imperfect voice, jazzy touches. Pleasant and low-key, then interesting and odd on closer inspection. My favourite track is opener "Little black numbers" with its curious "bees and wasps" set to plucked bass. I wouldn't have paid full price, but am glad to have found this and her previous album in sale bins. Karen (still forming my thoughts on Carina Round - will she be great, or will she be eff-ing brilliant? I've moved past 'damned good' as my prediction of her future achievements. Looks like "The Disconnection" is being released in North America on Interscope, due March 9th.) __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Aieee, it's on my rapidly expanding list of "things I really should post to ecto about"... :} Nerissa and Katryna Nields have been performing with their "Crackerjack Band" at select stops along the tour to support their new album, _This Town Is Wrong_. I learned many years ago that a show by any Nields incarnation at the Iron Horse, their hometown venue is never to be missed. This went double for the first time a Nields band played there in three years. They did two incredible shows. The early one was more focused on stuff from the new CD, while the late one focused more on rocking stuff from across the Nields canon, since the tables in front of the stage had been moved out. ("Alfred Hitchock" is one song I never thought I'd see performed again, so I just about fell over when it started.) >good? comfy? awkward? tight? loose? did something go where the >electric guitar used to, or did it announce itself by its absence? There is still an electric guitar -- sometimes two, when Nerissa is playing hers. :) Dave Chalfant has switched to guitars of the electric, acoustic 6-string, acoustic 12-string, and slide variety. They've hired a new bassist, who does a very good job with the electric material, and has added a new dimension since he also plays stand-up double bass. And Dave Hower is back on drums. They sound great together. They have only played four gigs now on this tour, so they could still get a little tighter, but they'are all clearly having a great time. Nerissa is beside herself to be playing with a band again, and Katryna was so overwhelmed that during the opening song of the early show, "Easy People", when she sang the "to you I would give the songs I write..." bit she got choked up and Nerissa had to finish the line for her. They'll be at the Paradise in Boston this Saturday evening with the band. I exhort any and all in the area to go. :) >...new album!? when'd *that* happen!? It happened on January 13. It's wonderful -- where _Love and China_ was more of a country album, this has more of a rocking, full-band-Nields sound. ("When I Let You Into My Closet", which starts with Nerissa intoning, "let's rock", has become one of my all-time favorite Nields songs ever.) I suppose you could call it a "concept album", since Nerissa has a novel coming out next year based on the song "This Town is Wrong", and the songs are all ones that the characters in her book wrote. You don't have to know any of the backstory to appreciate it, though. Any more questions, I'm happy to answer them ... :) =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Mar 2004 18:50:05 -0600 From: Aaron Hawkins Subject: Fwd: Wanna See Indigo Girls Live In NYC? There is some of the country element to _This Town is Wrong_ too, though - particularly in "Sara, With Your Ring" and a couple others. Anyway, it's a top-notch album. My favorites include "This Is The Work That We Do," "Haven't I Been Good," and the opening track, "The Day I Let Glory Steer." Oh, and "When I'm Here" as well. All of those are, in my book, right up there with Nields classics like "Gotta Get Over Greta" and "Easy People." I've only had the album for a month or so, but the above-mentioned songs have already worked their way near the top of my Most Played playlist in iTunes. I too was at the concert, and it was great. It was the first time I've seen them play with a full band, despite having been a fan since 1997 or so - I'd previously only caught them twice, both times as a duo (once opening for Cry Cry Cry in San Francisco, and more recently in their previous Iron Horse gig last year). I loved seeing them as a duo, but this was a whole new experience. My fiancee and I had only planned to see the first show, but we enjoyed it so much that afterwards we ran to an ATM and got back in line for the second show. josh. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Mar 2004 18:58:13 -0800 From: "London, Sherry" Subject: RE: ecto-digest V10 #67 <<< Date: Sun, 7 Mar 2004 02:55:24 EST From: Paul2k@aol.com Subject: Re: Calling all Southern California Thea Gilmore folks, plus Sweet baby jesus on a stick!
