I strongly urge you to go >check them out if they're playing in your area, as their live shows are >really amazing (so I'm glad I'll be seeing them tonight!). I second this recommendation. Tonight's show in Hamden is the very first "Wild Woman Radio Presents" show put on by my friend and co-host Sarah, so we need as many people there as possible!! (Very few things could keep me from being there tonight, but since seeing The Nields with a full band at The Iron Horse for the first time in several years is one of them, I'll just have to wait until the Dolls come back to New Haven in April. And yes, Sarah does understand this. I think. :}) One note for the Boston folks: >>Tuesday, March 9 >>Axis >>13 Lansdowne Street, Boston >>7 pm, all ages, $13 >>w/ Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and >>Faun Fables You are all hereby ordered to attend this show. This trio of bands did a show at Tonic in NYC this past Monday evening. Dresden Dolls were their usual unbelievably good selves (and I only just regained full use of my right ear from ending up standing not five feet from Brian's drum kit throughout, oops). Faun Fables completely blew me away. They are Dawn McCarthy and Nils Frykdahl (who is also in Sleepytime Gorilla Museum), and they make music that is slightly disturbing in a very good way. :) The best I can do is refer you to the sound samples on their web site (http://www.faunfables.net) and hopefully you'll see what I mean. Live, you also get the full impact of Nils, who looks like some sort of goat-god from the deepest forests of Narnia (when he took off his hat halfway through the performance I was genuinely surprised not to see little horns there -- I still remain unconvinced that he wasn't hiding cloven hooves in his boots), plays the flute and tinwhistle and lovely nylon-stringed guitar (sometimes all in the same song), and sings like Peter Hammill. Dawn looks like Christine Fellows, and sounds a bit like her too (I know this reference is going to be meaningful to about three of you out there, but really the best I can do). And she yodels! We couldn't stick around for Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, but woj went back to see them the next night, so maybe he can help describe them. All I know is they play lots of really weird homemade instruments, one of their members (Carla Kihlstedt) is also in Charming Hostess, they like to wear coordinated strange costumes on stage, they travel in a 1960's-era bus, and they play, in Don Keller's words, "very heavy, very dissonant avant-rock". I was sorry to have missed them, but it was really late and I just had to get home. I really wish I could make it up to Boston for this show. =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Mar 2004 13:18:27 -0800 From: "London, Sherry" Subject: Calling all Southern California Thea Gilmore folks, plus Thea will be playing on March 20th in Santa Barbara ....theater with 20 rows.....got my tickets.... Is anyone familiar with Marja West? I believe she's from the Bay area. Her CD "Open" fell into my hands recently. It shows promise, but I'm not so smitten that I'd encourage everyone to run out and buy it. It shows her posed against a grand piano on the front cover and more awkardly poised with a guitar on the back. The music is a bit Tori-derivative, though there are moments when her voice sounds remarcably like Sinead's. It seems this CD came out in 2002, and her web site doesn't give any more recent activity, though she does apparently do concerts. http://www.marjawestmusika.com/ Anyone? neal np: Open - Marja West ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Mar 2004 16:26:46 -0800 From: "London, Sherry" Subject: RE: Calling all Southern California Thea Gilmore folks, plus Hi Jeff: I have seen her live before too and she is really great, I agree. We shared a couch at the CD baby showcase for a couple of set and she told me to contact Jim, so I just might.
