It was difficult getting through the day without learning the results before it was free to air in the evening - lots of covering of ears when near radios and chattering people. A workmate was at home watching it on satellite and I emailed her that I'd drop objects (Angel dvds, actually) from a great height to brain her if she told me. My 'threat' was a bit vague and she took it as a promise to shower her with gifts, so she promptly emailed back the early results! One of my flatmates watched it live at the Embassy theatre, where the mayor and prime minister apparently wept after every win (I doubt the latter was so teary). We watched with friends who had put out their red towels to line the path and hallway - our own red carpet - along with copious signs saying "don't give any results away." Of course someone spilt the best picture win right away, grrrrr. Richard Taylor has the most ghastly kiwi accent. Quite odd hearing people speak one own's language on tv - only American sounds correct! The media here went crazy. Lots of talk about how we can capitalise on this economically. Blah. However, it's great to be part of a national celebration over something other than rugby. Our mayor wants another parade for Peter, but after the three premiere parades, that seems a bit much. Keisha was adored on return. She was disappointed that her front seat meant she couldn't text message her friends throughout the ceremony, only during ad breaks! And thrilled that Julia Roberts told her that she voted for her. There are still winners arriving home, so the media coverage continues. Karen __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Subject: Sarah Harmer UK date Just a quick note for the UK (well, okay, London) ectos -- Sarah Harmer is playing the Bush Hall on March 31st. This place seems to be shaping up to be a good ecto hotbed (Cat Power, Patty Griffin, Thea Gilmore, Janis Ian, Kathryn Williams have all or are all playing here, and REM did a fans-only gig here a few months ago), it's just a pity it's RIGHT on the other side of town from me. adam k. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Mar 2004 09:46:46 -0600 (CST) From: "Matthew B. Continues Eliza's winning recent releases. It has a song called Tender Mercies that is one of her most beautiful and poignant. It has haunted me since she sang it at one (or more?) of our house concerts a few years ago. It was inspired by seeing an apparently happy picture of children playing in a pool, which turned out to be chemically poluted. It ends with a lost Woody Guthrie song with backing vocals by Mary Chapin Carpenter, Patty Griffith and Iris Dement! Check out Eliza's completely redone web site too. There are a few bonus songs available on there which I just noticed but haven't heard. We'll be having Eliza back (in a small club rather then the house) on April 4th for a CD release party. Can't wait for that one! neal karen hester said: > Forwarding: > > Subject: Fw: New Eliza Gilkyson CD out March 27 Get Advance Signed Copy > > Today > > Eliza Gilkyson > > Hi, everyone - this is a special offer to our mailing list to get the > > new CD, Land of Milk and Honey, before its official release date, March > > 27th.
