I saw Bethany last week at Folk Alliance and thought she was amazing. She performed with a cellist, who often played as if he were a jazzy string bass player. Her set was all re-interpretations of older songs, but the versions were so amazing and compelling that they seemed fresh and new. I particularly remember Rock Island Line and Long Train On. There's some dates and info below. I highly recommend checking her out. She's a unique voice and a powerful presence. neal Forwarded From: Bethany Yarrow > ........................................................... > Bethany News :: > ........................................................... > > THE CORRECT ADDRESS FOR SEEING ROCK ISLAND: THE VIDEO IS -- > > www.apple.com/quicktime/whatson > > UPCOMING GIGS: > > WEDNESDAY MARCH 10th @ THE MONKEY AND THE RAT > in > Portland, Oregon. | 131 NW Second Ave. | tel. 503-224- > 3849. But still... I picked up her disc on a lark about a month ago from CDBaby and was pretty impressed. I can't recall where I read about her; might have been hearing a track on Radio Paradise. As Neal says, the disc is basically old folksongs with, mostly, a modern trip-hoppy treatment. I'm particularly fond of the opening track, "Black is the Color." jeff n.p. _Reflecting Seyelence_, Lunascape ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Mar 2004 23:07:09 -0500 From: "dave" Subject: Re:singing in french I've been listening to some music in French lately (would've been me that mentioned Alizee before) Besides those already mentioned, here's a couple more artists I know of that sing in French.. She is touring with a cellist (Marika Hughes) who also adds harmony vocals, and a violinist (Alan Lin), and their playing really compliments the songs quite well. The room was packed with fans (I'd wager that about 80% were asian) and those who were there for the other acts seemed to be won over by her. I love that she varies her set list every time I see her, but 45 minutes is just too short to get everything in. I wasn't planning on going to see her at the Borders Bookstore in Westwood tomorrow, but I think I just might have to so that I can request Soon Love Soon. Oh, and today she taped an appearance on the Wayne Brady Show that will air tomorrow (thursday). I believe the show is syndicated and is on in the mornings. Actually, I thought that the show had been cancelled, but what do I know? ;) Look at all the ectophiles she thanks in the liner notes...heee.
