Subject: YTKR I have a bootleg cd of this, purchased off a stall in Camden years ago, and I can testify the sound is pretty bad -- somewhat muffled and underwhelming, with a few live tracks and rarities tacked onto the end which obviously don't sound much better. A couple of years ago I found a site (which I'm afraid I can't remember) which listed all the YTKR bootlegs and rated them. Mine (Ultra Rare Tori), to my dismay, came out near the bottom, with a big "Avoid". I'm still glad I've got it, but I don't think I'll be chasing down any other copies soon. adam k. np -- Jonatha Brooke/Back in the Circus (ooooohhh, I like this. It's nice to see >for once the budget was not the deciding factor. The Gene Siskel Film Center here in Chicago is showing a program of Oscar shorts, so Chris and I got to see "Harvie Krumpet" last night. I was shocked that "Destino" didn't win, and if not that, then "Boundin'" simply because one is Disney & Dali and the other is Pixar. That was the big shocker last night. Everything else went according to plan (my plan...bwwwhhhaaaaa). Anyway, I wish I had seen these shorts before the Oscars because it would have meant more to see him up there. "Harvie Krumpet" is really wonderful. It's a funny but dark life story of a man who has just the worst luck imaginable throughout his life, and only gets lucky at the very end. It's claymation, yet by the end you just want to give the guy a big hug. I guess it was kinda sappy, even with its dark streak, which may be why it won (Destino was probably too weird, and Boundin' was probably too cute, and Nibbles, another one we saw last night, just wasn't good enough for the win. "Gone Nutty" wasn't on the program). After seeing it I'm really happy for the guy. >>Keisha's nomination, fantastic! >As was Billy Crystal's comment about hosting his first Oscar 13 years ago, >at the time Keisha would be born: "Things were so different then. So who can we drop a line to to suggest Happy's "Life on Mars" as a wake-up song? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Mar 2004 18:47:36 -0800 (PST) From: jesse hernandez liwag Subject: Singing In French Hello, I've been learning basic French for the last year or so and I'm beginning to be curious about Ectoish French-language singers. So far, my research in the Ecto DB yielded the ff: the McGarrigle sisters, Jorane (Peltier), Mylene Farmer, Alizee, and Lily Frost. Other efforts led me to Emilie Simon and Souad Massi. I've read the reviews, and the sound promising. So far, I've only heard clips from Lily Frost, Emilie Simon, and Souad Massi. I would appreciate any suggestion or advice. The translation is gorgeous, and, well, it's KaTe! Beyon that, since you say you haven't heard any clips yet, definitely give Jorane a listen. She sings in both French and English, and can be kind of scary-intense, but her voice, songwriting, and cello playing are all pretty wonderful. jeff npimh "Harbour", Vienna Teng (really need to write something about this album; it's rather incredible) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Mar 2004 19:30:30 -0800 From: jmgurley@drizzle.com Subject: Re: Singing In French For starters there's always Laetitia Sadier from Stereolab, and then the French folk-rock group Malicorne. ANNIE LENNOX WON AN OSCAR!!!!!!!!!!!! Even though I was totally blown away by the LoTR sweep, the most emotional moment of the night for me was seeing Annie up there in that gorgeous gown with her Oscar in her hand, trying to form a coherent sentence in her cute little Scottish accent. I've been a huge fan of hers for over 20 years now, and never in a million years did I think she'd ever win something like that. My second-favorite moment was Ngila Dickson's award for costume design. She did the costumes for the first 4.5 seasons of _Xena_, and every Xenite already knew her greatness simply by the fact that the costumes really tanked as soon as she left for Middle Earth. :) She was also nominated for _The Last Samurai_, so I'd been a bit worried the two nominations would cancel one another out, but obviously that didn't happen. =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Mar 2004 23:32:26 -0500 From: Paul Blair Subject: RE: Singing In French Besides those mentioned already, check out Zazie: http://madeinweb.free.fr/ or http://zazieonline.artistes.universalmusic.fr/ (Flash only) Of her albums I'm most partial to *Zen,* which is full of clever wordplay in French. >I've been learning basic French for the last year or so and I'm beginning to >be curious about Ectoish French-language singers. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Mar 2004 23:59:17 -0500 From: Valerie Richardson Subject: [Fwd: Singing In French] Brigitte Fontaine [France]!!!! She's been making avant-garde pop with varying degrees of strangeness and accessibility from 1970 to the present. I just discovered her music a couple of years ago, and I'm now totally obsessed. If she sang in English, she might be in the Ecto pantheon. Best releases _Comme a la Radio_ from 1971 and _Vous et Nous_ from 1977. I haven't made it to her more contemporary work (Kekeland, 2002), which is also supposed to be good. - --Valerie Richardson ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V10 #62 **************************
