Following up on his work for the movie Cold Mountain, Tim has been asked to organize a group of 37 Sacred Harp singers to both back up Allison Krauss on the Oscar-nominated song Scarlet Tide, and to sing a Sacred Harp song called Liberty (page 137 for those familiar with the Sacred Harp book). Look for the group around the time Renee Zellweger gets her Oscar for best supporting actress. It has been an interesting winter for Tim Eriksen who, in rapid succession, recorded a song for the upcoming remake of The Ladykillers, had a second baby, flew to Hollywood for the premier of the movie Cold Mountain, and participated in a live concert taped for an A&E cable special The Words and Music of Cold Mountain. Peter Irvine joined him for the A&E show, along with about 60 Sacred Harp singers who flew in for the occasion. Now, Tim is working on two albums to be released this spring: his second solo album on Appleseed Recordings, and an album of Sacred Harp songs from the Cold Mountain session. Tim plays a solo concert at the Iron Horse in Northampton, Mass., on March 13, as a split show with Karan Casey. Note that the Iron Horse show is the same weekend as the annual Western Massachusetts Sacred Harp Convention, so if you want a complete weekend, come and sing during the days, eat some food, and listen to Tim Saturday night at 7pm (he plays first). Peter, in a roundabout return to Northampton, Mass., stopped off in Minneapolis to hang out with Tim and teach a Music Business class at the University of Minnesota for the fall semester. His new entertainment law office in Northampton opens this month. At the end of February, he will be in San Diego, teaching at the annual Folk Alliance Conference. On the Friday night of the event, Peter hosts a showcase in the Royal Palm Tower featuring: Anandi (Portland originals), Deb Pasternak (Boston smartfolk), Jim Brunberg (Box Set, Mississippi Studios), Doug Van Gundy (West Virginia's fiddling poet), and The Shiftless Rounders (Phill Wisor & Ben Sidlinger) and possibly Jez Lowe (Geordie songwriter) if he makes it. Several of our albums are now available for legal digital download online. Check around the typical places such as iTunes. Thanks for listening and look for Tim's solo album in May. Hi, I once read a line that said," In matters of opinion our advisaries must be judged insane". An opinion is a mixture of our intellectual word thoughts and emotional 'felts' about a subject. It is this second factor that makes it "mean" so much. "I believe in [this], how could you possiblely not feel the same." Irwin and I are insane to each other. But I went in expecting an Ang Lee film, and that's exactly what I got. There are some beautiful touches in it, though the CGI Hulk really was an abomination. Fortunately there's not all *that* much of him to deal with in the movie. I am gleefully looking forward to a "fastball special" in the third film. Kevin O'Neill, artist on League of Extraordinary Gents, loved the film, saying that while not a faithful adaptation of the story, it was true to the spirit of the project. Moore and O'Neill got to make their story involving literary characters, and the filmmakers did the same. I will see it, probably on Cable somewhere. > > I was similarly disappointed with DAREDEVIL (though JENNIFER > >GARNER was great, I don't think an ELEKTRA movie is going to be all that > >better) > > Ah, but one hopes an Elektra movie will at least have no Ben Affleck in it!! Why no love for Ben? I liked Daredevil. It had it's flaws but overall I was entertained. True, Ben Affleck wouldn't have been my first choice for DD, but Colin Farrell rules as Bullseye and Michael Clark Duncan was impressive as Kingpin. I'd like to see a sequel. It way even be without Affleck, as he has been hesitant to agree to another movie. I still have hope for Elektra. > I really enjoyed _The Hulk_, but I had to adjust my expectations first. I now own this on DVD as a used purchase from Blockbuster. I will watch it when I can find the time. I have too much actual comic book reading to keep up with for my job at the store to sit down and watch the movie. Hell, I still haven't watched the extended cut of The Two Towers that I went out of my way to pick up the week it came out. Keanu has numbed my brain of all possible Constantines. When ever I try to come up with one, Keanu pops in and says "Whoa" and I lose it. > Well, it depends on who directs it. Neil Gaiman is writing and directing the bugger. Casting and shooting aren't scheduled, but I wouldn't call it limbo. All in all, I'm pretty happy with comic book movies lately. And NO!!! Catwoman is not a comic book movie as it has nothing, even remotely, to do with the comic book character by the same name. For shame DC and Halle Berry. American Splendor was wonderful. The mix of documentary and drama was blended so well and Paul Giamatti is outstanding. It's a good adaptation of the AS stories. The AS book collection can be a bit much for one sitting, but it's nice reading in smaller chunks. High five also to Road to Perdition. There were times where I actually forgot I was watching Tom Hanks on the screen. That doesn't happen often as usually I see Tom Hanks playing Tom Hanks (Philadelphia being another exception). He really sank into the role. Now I eagerly await the Sin City film directed by Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller which was just announced. It will and must rock. If it's an authentic copy on the Atlantic label it's worth it, since the market value of that CD is a lot more than $30. It's almost sure to be a bootleg copy, though, in which case you might as well just keep your money and download it from KaZaA or your choice of alternate P2P service. Don't pay a lot for the disc expecting to get an album full of great songs. YKTR was a misguided effort by the label to turn Tori into a rock star before she stood up for herself and recorded Little Earthquakes on her own terms. I was lucky to see Moya Brennan last night in Phila at the Tin Angel. It was an outstanding show. They were on for 2 hours. They did a set for 1 hour, took a 20 minute break and then came back and did another hour! She did many songs from her new CD, Two Horizons and also many Clannad songs including Harry's theme and Last of the Mohicans. Moya (or Maire) Brennan's voice is beautiful. Smooth, haunting, and ethereal. After a while, she kinda mesmerizes the audience by the seamless flow of her music. The band consisted of a synth/keyboard guy, a harpist, guitarist and S'nead on violin. Moya also played a very nice harp. I finally got to meet her after the concert which was definitely a nice ending to a wonderful night. I've never purchased a bootleg CD from a store myself, but I have seen plenty of them -- there was a record store not far from where I live (it went out of business a couple years ago) that sold tons of them. The vast majority of them seem to be CD-Rs with inkjet-printed covers, and yet they cost in the $20-40 range. Talk about a profit, considering that you can buy blank CDs for a few pennies each! I wouldn't want to reward someone who makes money by stealing someone else's creative efforts. Since YKTR is long out of print, I suspect there are Tori fan sites online where you can download it.
