She gets a B+. Jonatha gets a B+ as well. Just a few lines for each of them, nothing too glowy, but nothing negative either. Nice to see their respective P.R. machines getting the word out on them, especially Vienna. Woo! I just realized that my friend Victoria is playing this coming Saturday at the Derby on the same bill as Neko Case. How cool is that? Victoria will also be playing a show at the MBar on wednesday. Unfortunately, that means I can't see Odessa Chen and Noe Venable at the Derby on Wednesday. Looks like Jonatha Brooke is doing some big ol' touring to support the new album, including gigs at The Iron Horse, The Ram's Head, and Berklee, three of my old stomping grounds. I guess I'll just have to make do with her two night stint at the Knitting Factory here in L.A. Next week, Rachael Sage will be at the Hotel Cafe on the 1st, The Like at the Troubadour on the 2nd, and Bonfire Madigan with Miranda Lee Richards at the Derby on the 4th. Too much stuff! I just got a check for a whopping $13.86 - which wonderful independant non-price fixed cd should I purchase with this...hmmmmmm (I already ordered Vienna's and Jonatha's presettlement so I guess I have to wander over to cdbaby. Oh, on an unrelated note for anyone going to SXSW - if you are going to see Charlotte Martin's showcase, show up an hour early and catch Paul the Girl (from London)...you wont be disappointed! Portishead - Dummy (I cannot believe it has been 10 years since this came out!!!) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Feb 2004 21:48:52 -0800 From: Daniel Subject: Local Girl Makes Good For those interested: http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/entertainment/columnists/marian_liu/8016245.htm "Former Cisco engineer Vienna Teng gives a stirring performance on her sophomore album. As she did on her debut, ``Waking Hour,'' Teng uses her classical background and melancholy voice to merge Chopin and Sarah McLachlan. "This is a rainy-day album, with beats pitter-pattering and storming through. It branches out from the solo piano and vocals to string arrangements. The biggest treat is the last song -- a traditional Chinese ballad. "CD release shows 7:30 tonight at Borders Books & Music, 456 University Ave., Palo Alto, and 7 p.m. Sunday at Cowell Theatre, Fort Mason Center, San Francisco. Both shows are free." ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Feb 2004 22:15:05 -0800 From: Ethan Straffin Subject: Vienna in-store release Just got back from the _Warm Strangers_ in-store release at the local Borders. Needless to say, the place was packed to the gills, to the point that Vienna had to make a few announcements between songs about the fire-code issues. She played for about 45 minutes, with set list as follows: Homecoming (Walter's Song) Shasta (Carrie's Song) Anna Rose Mission Street The Atheist Christmas Carol Lullaby for a Stormy Night Harbor Green Island Lullaby (I may have the middle two reversed, but I'm pretty sure this is right otherwise.) Lots of nice stories about the songs, as we've come to expect. She mentioned that "Homecoming" grew out of her efforts to write a song about someone whose life was as far removed from her own as possible, and that a truck driver seemed to fit the bill. Meanwhile, she thinks of "Shasta" as being about his ex-girlfriend from twenty years back, who's "still kinda pissed off at him." Expect to hear these two played together a lot on the tour, in other words! As for "Anna Rose," it's about a five-year-old girl whom she's never met, but who fell in love with "Lullaby for a Stormy Night" -- which isn't hard to do, after all -- and drew her a picture. She took requests for an older song to play and got a lot of shout-outs, which seemed to be divided roughly equally between "The Tower" and "LfaSN." She made the right call IMHO -- though it surprised me a bit that nobody requested "Gravity." I've listened to the album a few times, and while I don't see it replacing _Waking Hour_ in my affections, I'm not sure *anything* could replace _Waking Hour_ in my affections. :) It's definitely a strong release, and I'd like to think that "Harbor" could be huge as a single if Virt can give it enough of a push.
