Anyway, they played 'Coinleach Ghlas An Fhomair' one day and I was instantly hooked, what a beautiful song. I've gotten a pretty good collection of their albums since then, along with Maire's solo work and a few of Enya's too. I saw Maire on the TV show Out of Ireland talking about her new CD a month or two ago, and I noticed that she had used the Moya spelling for it, meant to mention it here at the time, but must've forgot. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Feb 2004 11:43:06 -0500 From: meredith Subject: vienna on cbs this morning Hi, OK, so now probably isn't the best time to realize nobody ever posted the news about this to ecto. :} Vienna Teng was on the CBS Early Show this morning, doing their "Second Cup Cafe". Here's the play-by-play: The two "coming up" segments featured a short clip of "Hope On Fire" (with a band!), from the new album, then a clip of "Gravity". Intro was the usual "computer geek turns pro musician" story, with a clip from her appearance on Letterman. Then a short interview (no new revelations there). Finally, a full song: "Harbor", from the new album, with cello and drums accompanying. The cellist also supplied lovely backing vocals. Very, very cool. The second song, played at the very end of the show was "Shasta", also with the band. You'd think that WCBS in NYC, being the flagship station for the frickin' show would air the entire ending and thus the whole second song, but *nooooo*. And the Hartford CBS station, which used to air the whole thing stopped carrying the show years ago. Anyhoo, great to see Vienna on TV again! She was very poised. Needless to say we're keeping this on the TiVo. Not that I'm asking to be flooded with requests for copies or anything, but we're happy to provide as time allows. Note to NY-area ectophiles: Vienna will be at Joe's Pub in NYC on March 16 (hopefully with band), and at the Acoustic Cafe in Bridgeport on April 8 (probably without band, but still). Hope to see y'all there. (Have I mentioned that _Warm Strangers_ is *wonderful*? We managed to get a cutout copy over a month ago (yes, we will buy our own legitimate copy the minute it's available), and it's been on frequent rotation in the car. I've also been playing it on the radio every chance I get.) =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Feb 2004 14:02:14 -0600 From: "Collected Sounds" Subject: RE: vienna on cbs this morning Hi all, I also TiVo'ed this but have not had a chance to watch it yet. (I'm jealous you got it a month ago, I've been politely reminding Virt, but they kept saying it wasn't read yet). It IS wonderful. Another nice touch is that she thanked Ecto (along with a few by name)! You can pre-order it at Amazon now but I've been reassured it will also be on CD Baby soon. I'll be writing my review this weekend hopefully. I'll let you know when it's up in case anyone is interested. ~Amy Lotsberg Producer, Collected Sounds - a Guide to Women in Music www.collectedsounds.com PS I also got an advance of Anne Deming's new one, "Mulligan". It's also VERY good!! I'm listening right now! :) - -----Original Message----- From: owner-ecto@smoe.org [mailto:owner-ecto@smoe.org]On Behalf Of meredith Sent: Saturday, February 21, 2004 10:43 AM To: ecto@smoe.org Subject: vienna on cbs this morning Hi, OK, so now probably isn't the best time to realize nobody ever posted the news about this to ecto. :} Vienna Teng was on the CBS Early Show this morning, doing their "Second Cup Cafe". That's enough to turn ANYONE off! But thanks for the image; I wondered what I was feeling whenever I heard "Dr." S's dulcet tones screeching through my radio. Almost broke a nail punching her off. Evil twit, she. But it was Enya who motivated me to get a CD player. Two copies of her album in a row were warped so I took the 2nd back and got the CD. Then I went shopping for a player. It was the one "Sail Away" was on. I heard it first as a video on eMpTV, back when they were actually worth watching. Knocked me out. That's the summary by the LA Weekly of 24 year-old Kaki King. She is a new performer, was selling CD's on CD Baby, but she was quickly signed by Velour Recordings, and the CD was enhanced, it now features a four-minute video, numerous photographs and three bonus tracks accessible through a computer. People are blown away by her guitar work, and they can't believe that she is just one person who uses no loops on her guitar. She is currently travelling with Keb' Mo' for the next few weeks, as well as taking a few nights as a headliner in smaller clubs... tonight she is at the Fillmore in San Francisco, next Tuesday she headlines at the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley, and next Friday she is at the House of Blues in West Hollywood, then across the country, ending (I believe) in New York and Connecticut. You WILL be hearing of her, get in on the ground floor before she gets so popular that the venues are too big for comfort. I used to joke about it. Then one day in a fit of weirdness, I actually went and tried to see if it was true. I ripped a bunch of tracks to wav files, reversed them and reburned them on a disc. I called it "Enya! Enya! Cthulhu fthagan!". Almost everyone who I played it for said immediately "That is Enya, but I can't figure out which album it is." About 2/3s of them figured out it was backwards after about five minutes. Enya is pretty much the same, backwards or forwards. - -- "I say to you that the VCR is to the American film producer and the American public as the Boston strangler is to the woman home alone." - Jack Valenti in 1982 in testimony to the House of Representatives on why the VCR should be illegal. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V10 #52 **************************
