She is "Enya-like" > >and Irish, and probably belongs in the "upper atmosphere" group Another one to check out is Moya Brennan. I recently received her CD for review and I have to say it's gorgeous. I don't know Enya very well, but the pieces I've heard (radio, TV, etc) are very similar to this. Moya used to be the lead singer for Irish group Clannad (who I listened to tirelessly in the late 80s). Really lovely music. Haunting, dreamlike... Here's my review of the CD in case anyone is interested: "Two Horizons" by Moya Brennan Well, I spent a lot of my college years listening to Irish band Clannad so I was pleasantly surprised to see that lead singer Moya Brennan had released her own CD. I'm happy to report it is absolutely gorgeous. She was doing "Enya" way before Enya was (or at least way before I'd ever heard of her) and much better (in my oh so humble opinion). If you're not familiar with Clannad's sound, think light airy vocals over rich, lush and beautifully arranged instrumentation. All with a Celtic twist. It's the soundtrack to really good dreams. The kind you don't want to wake up from. Brennan's voice is sweeping and haunting. The CD packaging is as beautiful as the music. The photography is stunning and the colors dream inducing. My only complaint is that it's really tough to understand the lyrics unless you try really hard. But that means you can enjoy this recording on different levels. You can just listen passively and let the sounds wash over you. Or listen carefully to every nuance and every word. I believe you'll be rewarded either way. This CD would be perfect for those candlelit nights in the tub, or having a really romantic dinner..it's very mood altering. . If you like Loreena McKennitt or Enya you'll like Moya Brennan. Fuaim, from 1982ish... she sings on "An Tull" (solo) and "Mhorag's Na Horo Gheallaidh" (with the rest of the group), and plays keyboards. Good album overall, if you like Clannad's early stuff -- some straight-ahead Irish folk and some songs with things like saxes and electronic keyboards thrown in. Supposedly she's on the earlier album Crann Ull as well, uncredited, which is one I haven't heard. - -Kat another rare delurking > > Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Enya actually Moya > > (I'm more familar with her as Maire) Brennan's sister? > > And Enya was also in Clannad from 1980-82. > > > > --- Collected Sounds > > wrote: > > > Neile quoted: > > > > > > > >Meav should definitely be added to your list. > > > She is "Enya-like" > > > > >and Irish, and probably belongs in the "upper > > > atmosphere" group > > > > > > Another one to check out is Moya Brennan. (Irish Gaelic is a very strange language...) Maire has recently been spelling it Moya for internation releases; i reckon she got tired of being called "Mary". as another example, Enya's name is actually spelt "Eithne". the members of Clannad are all related; in fact, "Clannad" is a word for family in Gaelic (and rather obviously related to the English word "clan"). The main group was Maire and two of her brothers, Ciaran and Pol, along with uncles Padraig and Noel. sister Enya joined for three years around 1980. Pol dropped out around 1990. there are handful more sisters, some of whom pop up on backup vocals on Maire's albums; sister Brmdmn released a single a few years back but i never tracked it down. they are all from Donegal, which is in the far north of ireland (but part of the republic). Maire is a quite respectable traditional irish harpist, and Clannad's superb traditional album "Clannad in Concert" (1978) is a major reason i picked up the harp. to this day my favorite harp piece is their arrangement of Carolan's Planxty Burke; mind you, that's also one of the /only/ pieces i can play ;-) anyway, Clannad's early albums were much more rooted in irish trad, were quite influential, and are highly recommended. - -g - -- "i've never been afraid to change the circumstances of the world" - -- Happy Rhodes - -- "except for bunnies..." - -- Anya ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Feb 2004 12:32:42 -0800 From: raven@igc.org Subject: RE: Velvet Janes At 07:19 PM 02/17/2004 , Bill Adler wrote: >I have Martine Locke's CD, "Fly," but I like her more as a duo >in the band, The Velvet Janes, www.velvetjanes.com. They have been some of my favorite musicians since 1995 when I met them, before they called themselves "The Velvet Janes", I believe they were "Sistablue" then. They even stayed at my apartment for 10 days during their first visit to the US, and they had Rose's son Zak with them, he was then 7 years old and a total pleasure! After many tours in both Australia and the US for years, I believe Rose has decided to stay in Australia, at least for the immediate future, she is newly married, and Zak is in his mid-teens, so she will probably just perform in Australia, with Martine (Mardi) going over there once a year, in fact she's going in a couple weeks. >Some of Martine Locke's solo songs have a rougher, rock and >roll, sound; a noticeable contrast to the lush harmonies she >produces in The Velvet Janes. Yes, they are different, I like then both for different reasons, I like her album "Fly" very much, we all have different tastes. :) For her CD release party, she had a smoking hot band Dawn Richardson - Drums, Percussion (4 Non Blondes) Kate Wolf - Bass & Vocals (Zoe Lewis) Julie Wolf - Keys & Vocals (Ani DiFranco, Laura Love) and I recorded her release party for her archives... there were many people there, including many local musicians in the audience. Martine has really grown, as a person and a musician, I liked her then, but I like her more now, she's much more serious than she was... she also has lived in the US for several years. >The Velvet Janes are a treat to listen to. I had the good fortune to see her perform at the Birchmere outside of Washington, DC a couple of years ago. Her latest solo CD is, as Amy said, "gorgeous." (All of them are gorgeous, in fact.) I'd also suggest getting a copy of Clannad's early albums - --especially Clannad and Clannad 2-- which are available on CD. Moya Brennan's voice is beautiful. Rich, haunting, lush, melodic -- these adjectives, while accurate, barely describe how wonderful Moya Brennan sounds. (Best song on the first CD: "Morning Dew;" best on the second, "An Gabhar Ban.") Although Clannad is often called a "traditional" Celtic band, their music clearly goes beyond what's thought of as traditional. Perhaps the best way to categorize Clannad, especially their early albums, is "progressive-traditional." One of the most wonderful aspects of Clannad's Gaelic songs is that even if you don't speak Gaelic, which I don't, the sounds themselves create powerful emotions. After a couple of listens, you'll swear that you can understand the words. Clannad's music is like comfort food without the calories. And if you like Clannad, give a listen to Capercaillie, http://www.capercaillie.co.uk/, a Scottish band, whose lead singer, Karen Matheson has a voice that rivals any on the planet. Capercaillie is also a progressive-traditional Celtic band. My favorite two Capercaillie CDs are "Secret People" and "To the Moon". On "To the Moon" is one of the best songs I've ever heard anywhere: "The Crooked Mountain," which beings, "The woman who read my palm today was a friend of the pessimistic...Like a fool I took to the woman's words being a slave of the optimistic / I left my friends of childhood and the ones who saw me right..." - --Bill Adler n.p. McKenna's songs are by turns wry and biting, tender and gentle, but always stirringly honest. http://www.LoriMcKenna.com Mark Erelli "Tasteful, intelligent and sensitive, Erelli's songwriting is as unpredictable as a bead of mercury; once you think you have it, it reassembles into something else on the next track." -No Depression http://www.MarkErelli.com Tuesday, March 2 Fez Under Time Cafe 380 Lafayette Street at Great Jones * New York, NY 10003 Reservations 212.533.7000.
