Subject: merri-may gill I'd like to heartily second neal's merri-may recommendation. I saw her open at the 12 Bar Club, and she was easily the brightest spark in the evening -- as a performer, I found her funny, personable and engaging. To my amazement, I found "This is..." on one of my trawls. Personally, I think it loses something without her wonderfully expressive face and restless legs (she could -- and would -- dance sitting down) but it's a lot of fun, witty and intelligent, as well as tuneful, and I definitely think she's worth checking out. adam k. np 700 miles/MaryLee's Corvette ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Feb 2004 07:35:13 -0500 (EST) From: dmw Subject: Re: heather duby On Fri, 13 Feb 2004, anna maria stjdrnell wrote: > Hi.. > The new heather duby is wonderful. sounds like a > classic already. can't recommend it enough actually. did she record with larry crane at jackpot or john goodmanson on this one? ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Feb 2004 06:23:52 -0800 (PST) From: Craig Gidney Subject: The Onion on Gay Marriage This is pretty funny. I always spend a few hours in the Aussie Crock Pot, as they always have interesting performers. This year, they've got: - - Sophie Raymond: who we saw last year and also presented in our house concert series last year. Her CD isn't that striking to me, but I thought her show was a lot of fun. (And she's up for an Academy Award for her work on an animated short.) - - Women In Docs: New to me - - Merri-May Gill: Eager to see again - - Martine Locke: Showed promise last year, but didn't wow me either. Seems a bit of a thin list from years past. I miss the always raucous Bluehouse, who had become something of an FA staple. And last year I saw The Gits, and they were wonderful too. (Hmmm, a glance of schedules shows me that Bluehouse is actually at Folk Alliance. Given their showcases, it almost looks like they've moved from Australia to Texas?!?) neal gordodo@optonline.net said: > All the mentions of folk alliance reminded me the need to plug Women in Docs (my favorite obscure aussie folk duo :), but who's counting!!! Someone needs to develop a vaccine. Do you have the live album? I didn't even know about that, her site gets a bit arty and unusable sometimes. She looks rather scrummy on the cover of 'Evapore'. 'Je n'aime que toi' seems to be a movie soundtrack - 'un film de Claude Fournier'. There isn't much at IMDB, just released 2004, "Pretty good drama, A famous middle-aged author overcomes his writer's block by befriending a young prostitute and using her shocking life story as an inspiration for his new book. Their relationship grows deeper, eventually affecting his professional commitments and his marriage... It's an OK movie, by no means great but better than average. It does have strong sexual content, so those who are easily shocked should stay away." says the one person who has reviewed it.
