I was in a store that had them and noticed that they also had DVDA discs that play on DVDA players OR DVDV players. Sounded good. I looked around and found that there was a DTSCD of Days of Future Passed Moody Blues. I bought it and took it home and it FILLED the room. I then looked on the net and I may be wrong but the DTS discs give all they have on a DVD player. DVDA discs give good but not all they have in a DVD player (DVDs do not have DVDA audio) and the SACDs must be played in a SACD player to get the goods. You can play a newer SACD disc in a CD player and get normal stereo. Expensive. There are differences in whether you want surround sound or a warmer fuller non-compressed (as are CDs) sound between the DVDA and The SACDs. Rita Rudner had a bit about how she wasn't going to get a CD player until they could promise it would stay around. She would go crazy if they replaced it after she bought one. She says those people in big cities that go around talking to themselves were ex- 8-track owners. bye KrW I'm Peter Pan! I'm perpetually young!! OW!! What's wrong with my back? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Feb 2004 01:07:54 -0800 From: "thecritics" Subject: More New Artists, notes from Los Angeles I brought up Missy Higgins awhile back and I believe she was mentioned again a few months ago. She did a showcase at the Hotel Cafe in November. I had doubts after hearing her demo a few years ago that she really was the 'complete package' so many A&R were touting. Well, I was wrong, this girl definitely has me convinced. Huge voice that effortlessly delves in and out of jazz phrasing seamlessly with a pleasantly melodic touch... Surprisingly good, relaxed feel for the stage with an aggressive posture at her piano... Her short setlist included "All For Believing," "Don't Ever," "Simple Things," "The Special Two," "The Cactus Found the Beat," and "Greed For Your Love." She mentioned she wrote 'Cactus' at some ridiculously young age. This song was the head-turner point in her set. People (consisting of pretty much the entire Warner Bros. Records staff) stopped talking... 'Special' and 'Greed' seems destined for CHR greatness. Another lady getting some attention is Jesca Hoop, originally from San Francisco... Noe mentioned her last year on the list. She's one of the more fascinating artists I've seen recently... Odd blend of genres that will completely mesmerize you if you see her do it live... Perhaps the West Coast equivalent to Regina Spektor as far as sheer vocal expressiveness... Anyway, I'll let her music speak for herself. http://jescahoop.com/mp3.htm ("Seed of Wonder" choice pick). Matt Costa put out one of the best EPs I heard all year last year. Saw him perform and he reminded me of the first time I saw Tom McRae, Damien Rice, or Patrick Park. Lovely and lyrical and perfectly simple. http://www.mattcosta.com/music/ ("Astair" choice pick). Receiving a lot (probably too much) of "buzz" right now is Mighty Six Ninety... Vocally in the vein of Morrissey or David Gahan; musically in the mood of Joy Division and The Cure but this description itself is a bit trite and overused. Their "Overnights" EP is much better than their new one "MMIV" but unfortunately its not readily available. The latter is though... They pretty much came from out of nowhere (actually, San Diego) but moved here just within the last few months or so and have every A&R coming out to shows, which is a rarity in this shaky industry climate. They're showcase tonight with the equally "buzzing" Go Betty Go was so stuffy with industry brass that heading over to Bedroom Walls' residency opener at Tangier with Clovis de la Floret and Kennedy seemed a no-brainer. Some quick notes: Carla Werner is on tour right now in her native NZ/Australia with The Pretenders. She also has some exclusive tracks on iTunes. My favorite? Glad you asked: Consolation" (http://www.carlawerner.com)... Beth Waters has her first show in awhile in LA on Thursday (2/5) at the Derby where she collects a well-deserved song of the year award at the DIY Festival (http://www.bethwaters.com/)... Kristin Hersh does indeed have a new band, 50 Foot Wave, and is now based out of Los Angeles. Complex post-punk with a more altogether aggressive output from Hersh. Album out March 23rd, I think... Kay Hanley also moved to Los Angeles late last year. She's hoping to get some soundtrack work in town, I hear. She has a show with pal Michelle Lewis this Saturday (2/7) at Spaceland... Dead Rock West has a show at Largo on 2/10 with Gus Black. It's Cindy's first show at Largo with her own band since the pub became the hotspot for singer-songwriters (a long time). http://www.deadrockwest.com/... Oh, I guess I didn't post an obligatory 10 best thing... Gregory Page - Love Made Me Drunk (Bedpan) I Monster - Neveroddnoreven (Showbiz) MF Doom (Viktor Vaughn) - Vaudeville Villain (Sound Ink) Miss Derringer - King James, Crown Royal & a Colt 45 (Sympathy For the Record Industry) Petra Haden and Bill Frisell - Petra Haden and Bill Frisell (True North) 400 Blows - Black Rainbow (Rehash) So - So (Thrill Jockey) Lisa Germano - Lullaby For Liquid Pig (Ineffable) Over the Rhine - Ohio (Back Porch) Julieta Venegas - Si (RCA) Paul, if you're reading this I need your email. I'm guessing not, or the site would say so. Her sounds reminds me a lot of Rebecca Moore. woj, take note. - --Neile - -- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham .... neile@sff.net/@drizzle.com ... www.sff.net/people/neile Les Semaines: A Weekly Journal ........ www.sff.net/people/neile/semaines Editor, The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ........... www.ectoguide.org Workshop Administrator, Clarion West ................ www.clarionwest.org ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 31 Jan 2004 01:14:14 +0100 From: "M" Subject: RE: Lyrics search / Caroline songs Try Carolyn's Fingers - Cocteau Twins.
