Its a great song, but yeah not so happy. I do love that album though, it was fun to get that out after a few years. I don't have that Cocteau Twins album, maybe I'll find it. And I realized there is a song called Caroline, a love song, on the new David Gray album, which is good. Not to be techincal, but the band actually sings in what they call "hopelandic" - a made up language based on icelandic but its own language nonetheless...seeing as there are many of us on ecto fluent in icelandic, I dont think it makes a lick of difference unless you decide to sit there with an icelandic-english dictionary and attempt to translate :) On a totally unrelated note about tresspasser williams...I picked up Anne-Marie (I think) Williams book of poetry and song lyrics the other day from amazon...havent had a chance to read through most of it yet but I quite like what i have read so far... A question (bridging sigur ros and tresspassser...) - on the track Cabinet off Anchor, I noticed the effect of the singer's voice almost walking around me in circles while listening to the album on headphones (which I usually dont do...) How does this get done on record? Is it a fairly common technique? How does this get done on record? Is it a fairly common technique? you can't *really* get either front/back or up/down information in a stereo mix, but you can do some things to fool the ear that can be surprisingly effective. Shifting the "pan" of the vocal (the balance between the amount of the vocal that goes to the left and to the right channel) moves the vocal side to side in the mix. adding reverb creates a sense of distance from the sound source (so does recording with the mic farther away) ... so as the vocal goes farther to the left or the right you increase the amount of reverb so that the vocal sounds farther away -- you could also have someone actually sing while walking around a microphone -- less common, but it's been done. for the most part, this wasn't common practice until the (recent) advent of digital mixing consoles. usually reverb is something that gets set once for a given track in a song, because reverb controls the perception of space and changing it breaks the illusion that a band is playing in front of you, and also because it's a very tricky thing to adjust "in real time" when you're mixing down. (not that it wasn't done, but i think it's safe to say it was unusual. drastic left-right pans on the other hand are a staple of the classic "headphone" album) ... and i think it's still a bit unusual, but you definitely hear more of it nowadays, in part because it's technically much easier, and in part because the current fashion has very little to do with creating a realistic impression of a live band. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 03 Feb 2004 09:21:46 -0500 From: hooligan Subject: Re: Caroline songs The Cocteau Twins' song is Carolyn's Fingers. Also, I've been enjoying a lot of surprisingly ecto, stuff from my local library that I would probably never have picked up if it weren't for this list: Garmarna, Death Cab for Cutie, Velvet Underground, Eleni Mandell, Eliza Carthy. Great stuff! They have a really random collection. Makes me wonder if someone on this list left them their stuff. Hi everyone, I have some great news. Beth has filled me in on some of her plans for the next year or so. Late last year Beth signed a new publishing deal and also has some possible label interest for releasing Suddenly, Tammy! stuff as well as her own solo material. She is trying very hard to get Comet released within the next year. After that she will also be trying to release the Xmas EP, el presidente and Spokesmodel. She also plans to keep recording new solo material and get that released as well. No firm plans at the moment, but it's all on the horizon. Beth is still teaching and has just gone back to college FULL TIME (yikes). This summer she is composing music for a childrens musical in NYC. When Greta Gertler returns from her tour of Australia, she and Beth will be doing some shows together, so stay tuned for upcoming dates. Wahoo! Also- Just a quick note about the el presidente trade that was posted a few weeks ago. That was a mistake. I have removed those posts and would like to simply state that the discussion of trading music is off limits on this list. Besides, Beth is trying her best to get all of this music released to us. Nuff said. The songs on _( )_ are all in "Hopelandic". Anyway, Hopelandic is pretty much the same idea as what Liz Fraser did in (most) Cocteau Twins songs -- singing random words or just vocal sounds that go with the music. (The one Cocteau Twins album I got where the lyrics consisted of actual meaningful phrases or even _sentences_ was strange by comparison.) > A question (bridging sigur ros and tresspassser...) - on the track > Cabinet off Anchor, I noticed the effect of the singer's voice almost > walking around me in circles while listening to the album on > headphones (which I usually dont do...) How does this get done on > record? Is it a fairly common technique? Playing with stereo imaging is a common mixing trick. It may be something as simple as just panning the vocal between the left and right channels; if the voice was recorded in stereo then making small changes to the phase difference between the stereo channels or manipulating it in other more subtle ways can also change the perceived location of the voice. ------------------------------ Date: 03 Feb 2004 11:39:12 -0800 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Song Identification? A friend asked me to identify a song from the usual vague description, so I'm tossing it out to the Group Mind: The song had a female vocal over piano, with a brisk, "bouncy" feel. The voice was in conversation with herself, and at one point said "Hello" repeatedly in several languages. The listener heard it frequently on the radio in Dallas in 1995-1996. I have a feeling I'll have a moment of "D'oh!" when this is identified, Any clues? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 03 Feb 2004 19:31:38 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Re: Caroline songs Hi, I don't know why it took me this long to remember "Caroline Dreams", by The Nields (on _If You Lived Here You'd Be Home Now_). How we do that has a lot do with the shape and frequency response of your head (and particularly ears), and some very sophisticated processing our brains do. These effects can be synthesized by convolving an audio signal with a directional "head-related transfer function" (HRTF). This depends on delivering the audio directly to the ear, so the illusion is only convincing with headphones. The best results require using an individual's specific HRTF (and a transfer function for the headhones used), but there are off-the-shelf chips and effects boxes that use a typical HRTF to synthesize a spatially located sound source--these are more likely to cause disorientation than a HRTF tailored to the individual. Googling on "binaural spatial synthesis" or "spatializer" will turn up lots more. While they are readily available, I don't know how much they are used. Probably more than I'd guess--portable tape, CD and MP3 players have made headphone listening more common than it was when I was young. - -dan ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Feb 2004 17:10:18 -0800 From: "Russell Van Rooy" Subject: Re: Caroline songs "Caroline's Waiting" by Bibi Farber off of her "Firepop" album.
