Beautiful print, full-length commentary and interesting alternate scenes. Two disk set. You can also play the Tom Waits/Crystal Gayle soundtrack separately. Ask Vickie - this is one of the most romantic movies ever and it was a crime that it has been out of distribution for 20 years. Now available on Amazon for $23+ including shipping. Criticisms on IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084445/usercomments) say that the release was changed for the worse with cutting of segments in the original. I will now have to go back and see my old VHS copy and see for myself. Some of the reviewers don't really like it, or like Teri Garr in it, but I think she is perfect for the character, and Kinski is phenomenal. Frederic Forrest is a little TOO much of an asshole, but I think he seems to grow at the end. The soundtrack is masterful - all written by Tom Waits and his voice and Crystal Gayle's complement and carry the story and reflect the unspoken feelings of the characters. Coppola's construction of the scenes is, as usual, unique and imaginative. A visual feast. - -- |^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^Not subject to unwritten-law enforcement^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^| | There is no snooze button | http://www.moonmac.com/ | | on a cat who wants breakfast <*> mp@moonmac.com | | --(unknown) | michael@pmug.org | | K E E P T H E | N T E R N E T F R E E | |____No Microsoft products were used in the production of this message____| ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Feb 2004 03:00:03 -0500 (EST) From: Mike Matthews Subject: Today's your birthday, friends... i*i*i*i*i*i i*i*i*i*i*i *************** *****HAPPY********* **************BIRTHDAY********* *************************************************** *************************************************************************** ******************* Bob Lovejoy (rlovejoy@comcast.net) ******************** ********************* Diane Burke (no Email address) ********************** *************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Bob Lovejoy Sun February 02 1947 Aquarius Diane Burke Sat February 02 1963 slow children Timothy S. It might work better for me to get in the habit of reviewing stuff as I pick it up. Sigur Rss, _Agftis byrjun_: I learned something in the process of making oggs (as in Ogg Vorbis, the patent-free alternative to MP3) of this album for my laptop: Don't waste time painstakingly transcribing ISO 8859-1 characters into a track listing if all my ripper/encoder program is going to do is change them into '#'s in the labels in the oggs. Arg. Anyway, if anyone has been intrigued by the talk of Sigur Rss on Ecto, I highly recommend picking up _Agftis byrjun_ as a first album instead of _( )_. Not that _( )_ is bad, but _Agftis byrjun_ (which, appropriately enough, translates to something like "a good beginning") is a lot more immediately appealing, and if you like it you'll probably also like _( )_. The nutty musical analogy I made when describing Sigur Rss to somebody the other day was "Cocteau Twins meets Pink Floyd", at least in the sense of having vocals that are there mainly for musical value rather than meaning, combined with a sort of rock concept-album feel. I am pleased to report that it looks like the current sigur-ros.com web site appears to have become the contents of sigur-ros.co.uk; it used to be some sort of broken Flash site before, while sigur-ros.co.uk is a nicely-designed readable web site. There are also song downloads available so you can try before you buy. Speaking of buying, Sigur Rss should win some kind of award for most aggravatingly cryptic album packaging. _( )_ contains no written material other than the handwritten band name and some obligatory copyright statements. _Agftis byrjun_ is mainly recognizable for a drawing of something like an angel fetus on the black cover, and if you look closely on the spine you can just make out the title in tiny silver-gray print. The booklet inside has more drawings like that, a track listing that annoying obscures many letters in the song titles with a spirally thing, and all other written material in Icelandic (and, in fact, when I tried looking up a cddb entry for it, someone had apparently typed what look like the credits as song titles). Fortunately, the sigur-ros.com web site has complete track listings, and even lyrics (in Icelandic, of course) for those songs that have meaningful lyrics. Beth Gibbons and "Rustin' Man", _Out of Season_: It's a lot like having another Portishead album, which is just fine with me. Neutral Milk Hotel, _In an Aeroplane over the Sea_: I mainly picked this up since I vaguely remembered the title and band name being mentioned on Ecto. It is . . . interesting. Rough, even awkward in places, but strangely compelling. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Feb 2004 13:07:34 -0800 From: Steve VanDevender Subject: bands that are gone Over the past couple of years you probably saw me raving about a local band called Tympanic. The reason I haven't been raving about them recently is that they officially disbanded last August after a farewell concert. There was nothing particularly acrimonious about the breakup, but it was a bit of a blow to me; I found their shows fantastically enjoyable and there was a real sense of potential in the quality of their music and their appeal to audiences. The occasional bits of news I've heard since then is that three of the four guys are working on a new band project of their own, while the other is playing with another Portland-based band. Since they never objected to redistribution of the various live recordings they released, as a special Ecto offer I'm making available my MP3 archives of the recordings I was able to obtain at: http://hexadecimal.uoregon.edu/~stevev/tympanic/ In there you will find "m3u" track-listing files, and under the tympanic/ directory additional subdirectories with the tracks from each of the CDs. I certainly doubt this stuff will appeal to everyone (it's not quite Ecto-mainstream, although I would argue it has much of the quality in music and songwriting we all look for), but if anyone was wondering what the hell I was raving about and never got to see one of Tympanic's relatively few live shows, you can find out now. I most recommend the "2.1.03 Wild Duck" recording (tympanic/2103_wild_duck/), which is an entire opening set. It has probably the best overall sound quality (although very limited stereo imaging), and is also the most recent of the recordings I was able to collect, showing the band at the top of their form. After that, the "Live 9.22.02" (tympanic/live_9_22_02) has better stereo but muddier sound. The remaining material probably requires a tolerance for mid-to-low-quality live recording, although there are still some gems in there. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 02 Feb 2004 19:48:18 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Attention CT folk Hi, This just in ...
