Subject: Carina Round at the Lock Well, another performance from Carina that can only be described as....cathartic. And awe-inspiring and beauteous. The good news was that she was headlining, really headlining (rather than the "co-headlining" she did last time, which actually meant she was a support act). The bad news was that this meant we had to sit through not one, but two dire opening acts. Despite having a really bad cold, Carina gave a fireball of a performance, never letting the songs suffer (although her inter-song banter sounded deathly croaky). The one-hour set drew, again, mostly from her new album, The Disconnection, with only Let it Fall from her debut making it through. I still think this is a pity, as the First Blood Mystery is a lot more musically adventurous than The Disconnection, but the evening held one of those wondrous, eye-opening surprises in the form of the live version of Elegy. I've always thought of it as a rather puzzling fizzle-out of a final song on The Disconnection, but she and her band enlarged it into something amazing, an epic, dazzling and uplifting soundscape that I didn't want to end. Everything a live version should be. And, as for her spoken-word rant at the end of Let It Fall --- well, she's a woman possessed, and it's electrifying. When I heard First Blood Mystery, I compared her to PJ Harvey meets Ricky Lee Jones, but with the more straightforward direction of The Disconnection, I think she's probably closer to PJ Harvey meets Patti Smith. Whatever --decide for yourself. She's coming to America or, at least, NYC in March, when she plays the Peppermint Lounge. Go see. Go see. Big up, of course, to fellow ecto Jason, who managed to make it from the States to see her. Good to see you again, Jason, and special thanks for making the opening acts a bit more bearable! adam k. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Jan 2004 09:56:07 -0500 (EST) From: dmw Subject: Re: SOS JFK On Thu, 29 Jan 2004, Ed Cole wrote: > The label's site also says that Ivy has a new album out, Guestroom. Also for you lucky people in Chicago, Emilie Autumn is doing a series of "Acoustic Cabaret" shows at The Gentry. Emilie says, "Acoustic Cabaret basically implies a very minimalistic show consisting of myself without any backup, performing mainly at the piano, and playing a very wide selection of material without regard to continuity or logic. These shows are for the precise purpose of trying out new material before small crowds, and getting to practice dancing on a piano. I'm still looking for the right shoes. ... These are very special shows which are more along the lines of a private party than your average club gig. Even better, there is no cover charge, though it is regrettably 21 & up." It's more in the electronica/trip-hop/pop vein, but better done than "Long Distance." Of their albums, it's probably now the one I listen to most. Well worth getting if you're a fan. If you don't feel like reading it here, go to http://www.canoe.ca/JamColumnBliss/jan30_bliss2-can.html Lowdown: Exclusive Canadian music news McLachlan returns to the road By KAREN BLISS -- For JAM! Music With child and husband in tow, Sarah McLachlan will embark on a North American tour this summer in support of her latest album, "Afterglow." Beginning July 5 in Seattle and ending in her homebase of Vancouver on September 10, the multi-platinum singer-songwriter will hit 41 cities, including seven in Canada. "I figure I'm probably more set up than most people. Husband's with me," says McLachlan of Ash Sood, also her drummer. "I have the luxury of affording a nanny who can come out and help out when I'm not there. It's great. And she's going to have a bevy of living aunties and uncles (laughs) -- all my band and crew just adores her. "If anything, she's just going to be a spoiled little beast that, by the time we get home, I'm going to have to be just mean old mom because it's only me and Ash and she'll be like, 'Hey, where's my big huge family of circus friends to play with me all day long?'" The 36-year-old McLachlan, who has made Vancouver her home since signing with Nettwerk in the late '80s, gave birth to her daughter, India, on April 6, 2002. She had every intention of taking a hiatus, once her female-dominated tour creation, Lilith Fair (booked by Marty Diamond at New York's Little Big Man), ended in 1999. She planned to have a child and spend time with friends and family. She just didn't plan on being away for as long as she was - six years, in fact, since her last studio album, "Surfacing." "I wouldn't do it the same again," McLachlan says. "It only evolved like this because of circumstances. It's just that life intervened. First, I got pregnant, then my husband's father died that October, and then my mother died in December. So it was a helluva time." McLachlan's absence didn't seem to matter to her fans. When Afterglow was finally released last November 4, it went straight to number No. 1 on the Canadian SoundScan chart, where it remained for seven weeks. The album is still in the top 10, and has well surpassed triple-platinum (300,000) in Canada. She is nominated for best female pop vocal performance at the upcoming Grammy Awards, in Los Angeles, February 8, and will perform at the Juno Awards, in Edmonton, on April 4. "Stupid," the follow-up single to "Fallen" from Afterglow, is set to impact at radio on March 1. The video will be shot next week in Los Angeles with director Sophie Muller (Annie Lennox, Eurythmics, Blur, No Doubt), who also produced live clips for McLachlan's "I Will Remember You," "Ice Cream" and "Possession." The upcoming Afterglow tour marks McLachlan's first since 1999. While she did perform one-off shows, like for the BC Cancer Foundation, Music Without Borders, and Concert For Toronto, and recently made promotional appearances on Letterman, Leno, Ellen, Kilborn, and Regis for the new album, she remembers mixed feelings after the three-summer Lilith Fair festival was put to rest. "It was sort of bitter sweet," she explains. "I was happy that it was finished, but it was a really fun time as well, sort of an end of an era. I sure appreciated the time off, but whenever you come off the road there's sort of a reentering into orbit (laughs), like you've been in outer space and you have to become grounded again, and that's always a real transitional time."
