Subject: Bottom Line I know that people have their reservations about this place, but I have fond memories of it from my time in NYC (1977 - 1983), especially as I went to NYU and spent a lot of time down there -- it became something of a landmark, with it's constant posters outside for Laura Nyro (who I never got to see) and advertisements for WNEW, in which the DJ's posed a la album covers of the time (including a large guy -- Tommy Vance? -- doing a Patti Griffin, "Easter" stylee, which was kinda funny). In truth, I don't remember seeing that many gigs there. I thought I'd seen tons, but can only come up with an evening of street performers (Charlie Barnet headlining, and dozens of woodwind quartets doing Scott Joplin covers), Lou Reed, Peter Hammill, Steve Hackett, Horslips and Janis Ian. The latter was particularly significant for me, as I was rebounding from my love for a girl who'd decided she wanted to be a lesbian, and I found myself surrounded by lesbian couples clutching roses to offer to Janis. I remember it being a bit disappointing (her backing band was a bit lounge-room cheesy) but I was also shaken by her rendition of a song called "Winter", which was brilliantly searing and impassioned. Last year I came across a live album of hers, recorded at the Bottom Line, and I think it's the one I was at -- the date is about right. If it is, then the photo inside, of the area in front of the stage, has me, lurking in the shadows. Weird. I realise it may have become a bit of an institution, but back then it was about the only proto-ecto place around, albeit for more established ecto stuff. Back then it seemed to be all CBGB's, the Peppermint Lounge, the Ritzy, the Lone Star Cafe and the,um, Great Gildersleeves, mostly catering to punk/new wave and/or country and western. There may have been a lot of smaller places dotted around, but the scene was much more underground, and my tastes were different, so I didn't notice them. So maybe I'm talking out of my arse and just getting nostalgic. adam k. np - Louis Armstrong/The Essential Recording 1925 - 1940 (four CD set for #3! Dear Friends, We are performing at the Santa Monica Farmers' Market this coming Sunday, February 1st, in super-acoustic fashion (details below). The market has wonderful produce, offers fantastic breakfasts and good coffee, and features a nice grassy area to hang out if the weather is good. See you there! The last paragraph reads as follows. An influential figure, McLachlan is also a fervent supporter of a host of deserving charities. Lately, she's even been credited with advising Dido. Ultimately, thought, it all comes down to the music -- and hers is sort of a cross between Dido and Annie Lennox. This is her fifth album and, just like the other four, it is underwhelming, overproduced, tediously bland and utterly dreary. Well, I guess Afterglow isn't going to be the one that brings her stardom in the UK... Ellen ===== "Literature stops in 1100. I figured they were mentioned already. (As obvious choices.) I don't think "The Cramps" counts as a "monthly" band. ]:> - -- "Push that big, big granite sphere way up there from way down here!
