Subject: 3 things. At something of a lose end and in need of distraction, I thought I'd post on three things, with no connection: 1) Buffy. I'm slowly working my way through the last series that I taped as BBC2 was throwing it, slapdash and bowlderised, onto our screens over here. I think it's great, and would even go so far as to say that some of the episodes are among the best Buffy, ever. The excised violence leaves some moments incomprehensible, but I love it. BBC 2 is currently showing the whole series late night, most likely uncut, but I think this might be one series I get on DVD for the full picture. What will I do when I've watched them all? I guess it's too late to start watching Angel. 2) Apart from Amy Winehouse (the new, much-hyped soulful singer/songwriter, profiled in this week's Time Out London) the name to look out for is Joss Stone, a 16 year-old, umm, soulful singer/songwriter who's getting a LOT of coverage, right now. I really should start listening to the radio -- I'd probably actually get to hear some of this stuff. 3) According to an aricle in the Guardian a couple of days ago, the latest lineup for "I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!" (latest reality Big Brother clone, set in the rainforest of Oz) includes John Lydon. I guess I'll leave aside the question of whether this is ethical. For information about the value of Tori stuff, you can check out the Little Blue World collectibles guide at: http://www.little-blue-world.org/collectibles.html Just to possibly save you a step, if any of your singles are regular commercial US singles, then they're not valuable. And, in general and with a scant handful of exceptions, any singles (regardless of country of origin, and regardless of promo or commercial) from later than _Boys for Pele_ don't have value as collectibles either. If it turns out that none of your singles are particularly valuable, I'd recommend listing them on Amazon instead of going to a used CD store. For anything that they list, you can sell used versions of it. (Well, that might not be entirely true, I dunno if you can sell something like used batteries. ;) You set the price that you're willing to accept, and let the buyers come to you. I've done this for a few things that I don't want anymore (such as the 'Crucify' EP that my mom has sent me four times now ... ) and had pretty good results. /nm ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Jan 2004 18:12:13 -0500 From: Jason Gordon Subject: one more monkey lets not forget about the obscure: Monkey in the Middle - Ripley Caine perhaps the monkey mix is going to be a box set? - -jason ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Jan 2004 19:10:20 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Re: one more monkey Hi, I can't think of anything to add to this thread of songs about monkeys, but a question ... I know that a lot of people aren't in to her music now as much as they were years ago, but I was still a bit surprised I hadn't heard anything about it. I've been listening to her a lot lately, though mostly stuff from To the Teeth and earlier and the latest live album. And I was wondering if she was going to release something new this year since she does just about every year, and Evolve was out last spring. That album grew on me well, and Educated Guess sounds interesting from the review. "In form, this is the disc DiFranco fans have wanted for years: a return to her naked roots of words and guitar, entirely played, sung, and taped to eight-track by Ani herself. But in important ways, Educated Guess suggests there is no going back. Even alone, the lessons of DiFranco's adventurous decade with a band are apparent. Taking a wide-open approach to arrangements, structure, and sound, she piles up tracks of bell-clear, percussive guitar, then does the same with her vocals, the gymnastic phrases echoing, reflecting, and doubling back on themselves. This is DiFranco undiluted, her melodies pulled by rhythmic innovation, alliterative snippets of spoken word woven between jazz-inflected folk songs, lyrics tracing tangled webs of lovers, nations, and various versions of herself. Not surprisingly, it's excessive, but her legions say that's the price of letting ragged passion just hang out. --Anders Smith Lindall " Jonatha's new album, Back in the Circus, is due on Feb. 24, and the Indigo Girls release All That We Let In a week before that. Natalie Merchant's The House Carpenter's Daughter is available, and the sound clips sound more intriguing than the early (pre-release) reviews I read, so I suppose I'll have to pick that up someday.
