Apparently, the Sarah show in LA last week was a one-off thing. There was no other reason for her to be in L.A. beyond the show. She kinda shrugged quizically when I asked her about this. But she did say that she has a new album coming out sometime this year on Warner in Canada (and I commented on how it was strange that they picked her back up after the Atlantic branch of WEA screwed the pooch on her previous album), and that she hopes to do a bigger tour in support of that. I was surprised at how mesmerized I was by her performance. I haven't picked up Night Bugs because of the songs I heard on KCRW and the descriptions various ectophiles here posted on her foray into a more cabaret style. I was steeled for that at her show, and will admit that I'm not usually a fan of the style. But Sarah really snagged me. Her voice was strong and pure...I hadn't seen her since some of her Boston shows 3 years ago, and I was struck by how it sounds like she's really found her voice. That voice might be different than what a lot of us were hoping for with her first couple of releases, and on paper, I'd say "not my cup of tea", but in person, it agreed with me. A swedish artist who only has 1 EP released in the US so far. I liked him so much I ordered his whole catalog from his record company in Sweden! Every track on this five song EP is a gem! Every song is different, ranging from Alt-Rock to Folk, with a touch of country thorwn in, and some Adult-Alt. The highlight of the EP is probably Astrom's cover of the children's song, "You Are My Sunshine." As quirking as it sounds, this song destoryes any visions of happy children gleefully singing. He has made the song his, and turned it into a sad, depressing folk/blues wonder. I HIGHLY recommend EVERY CD from his catalog! - --=_NextPart_Lycos_0143981073723932_ID-- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jan 2004 06:03:26 -0800 From: "London, Sherry" Subject: RE: ecto-digest V10 #12-Holly McNarland Stefan.....let me give a plug to Holly McNarland....her first EP, "Sour Pie" is some of the most intense and emotionally raw lyrics I have ever heard. She has evolved past some of her early angry angst with the birth of her child but is still stellar in my humble opinion. I couldn't recommend her highly enough... I'm gonna check her out (I'm listening to some songs from her website right now). Also great to hear that Abra's got a new CD out soon. Just what is it about so many U.K. musicians' websites? Everywhere else musicians have at least some samples, no matter how brief or low bandwidth. Is webspace/bandwidth so much more expensive in the U.K.? Even amazon.co.uk is suprisingly sparse with their samples, especially of U.K.-only releases. I always have to do a helluva lot of searching to find samples of U.K. bands, and often there simply aren't any that I can locate. It's frustrating. - --Neile - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- neile@drizzle.com / neile@sff.net......http://www.sff.net/people/neile The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ......... http://www.ectoguide.org Co-Administrator, Clarion West ............ http://www.clarionwest.org ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jan 2004 12:36:46 -0800 (PST) From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: sarah slean and others in L.A. this month On Tue, 13 Jan 2004 Paul2k@aol.com wrote: > I was surprised at how mesmerized I was by her performance. Paul, I bought _Night Bugs_ reluctantly. I'm not a big fan of cabaret-style singing and I loved _universe_ so much (though found her follow-up a little undistinctive). I was surprised how much I liked _Night Bugs_. Parts of it didn't work for me, but overall I quite like it. So, just like you: theoretically, not my cup of tea, but on disc it somehow won me over. I'd love to hear her live sometime. - --Neile - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- neile@drizzle.com / neile@sff.net......http://www.sff.net/people/neile The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ......... http://www.ectoguide.org Co-Administrator, Clarion West ............ http://www.clarionwest.org ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V10 #13 **************************
