There is this question that goes way back to the very beginning - What shoe size do you use? :) Just one little note - There isn't really a clear definition of what Ecto really is. We've had discussions on here about everything from, yes, shoe sizes to physics besides music of course. This IS a flame-free environment, so if you should come in some situation where you aren't sure if something is a flame or not then take some deep breaths, wait for some time and then look at the msg again. - -- Yngve ****************************************** * One alien has come, unalien to one ***** ****************************************** ***** Blessed be!!! ********************** ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Jan 2004 10:19:39 +0100 (CET) From: Yngve Hauge Subject: What ecto is Lately we've seen the tendency of people on here excusing themselves when posting on the list. As far as I know there aren't anyone sitting somewhere keeping tabs on what is ecto or what is not ecto. This IS my main source for great music, and to read about people drifting away from what is ecto is for me something that is not possible. It is like saying that water isn't wet anymore. Ecto isn't a static entity - it has evolved all the way from the beginning into something with a life of its own. Just look at the Ectoguide and tell me if it is possible to pinpoint an exact genre ecto is all about. The only common theme is the female vocals thingy, which doesn't say much really. Ecto is an island in constant growth and we can't do anything about it really other than having a good time with all the amazing sights on it. Ecto is not clearly defined, so to start some msg with "This is not really ecto, but ... " is really a contradiction. In my opinion what ecto is, is what is discussed on the list and more than 1 person participate in that discussion :) Just my 2 cents or whatever currency you people out there might use. Wade, Welcome to Ecto! I am sure that you will enjoy the stay. I have been on the list since 1998 and don't post much anymore. I am more of a lurker these days. The people here are great! I have been turned onto many new artists and have made a number of new friends during my stay here. Ecto first came together because of the efforts of lovers of the music of the incomparable Happy Rhodes. Check out these URLs to find out more about Happy: www.auntiesocialmusic.com/ www.smoe.org/ecto/about_happy.html The list has evolved into a discussion group of all types of music and artists. What is Ectophilic music is the eternal question. I will let others here answer that question. We also discuss movies and TV shows and all sorts of other things. Music is generally the main focus though. The discussions are almost always interesting and civil here. You very rarely find the bickering and rude behavior that is found in the Usenet newsgroups and other discussion groups. BTW, there are definitely a fair number of Midwest Ectophiles, including at least one of the founding members of the list. I will let them tell their own stories. I am from the SF Bay Area and there are a fair number of Happy fans and fellow Ectophiles out here as well. Oh, and I believe the appropriate question to answer is: What is your shoe size? (if I remember correctly that is the traditional newbie question to be answered). Please post your faves. I am sure I am not the only one who would like to see your list(s). Enough from me. I sure that others will chime in with a welcome. All the best! Bill M. n.p. Kevin Bartlett _Near Life Experience_ n.r. Particularlly the St. Louis area? or even the Kanasas City or Chicago area? I am in the St. Louis are, and am also looking for people to meetup with at concerts and stuff like that! For the purposes of The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music, we've defined ectophilic music as anything ectophiles like to listen to. With the wide range of tastes in here, that covers a _lot_ of territory. Mostly female vocals, yes, but most people here would argue for the centrality of several male artists to ecto, Peter Gabriel in particular. I myself would arge for Gabriel Yacoub, but then I always do that. Heh. Our favourite music tends to have female vocals and tends to fall roughly in the area of experimental pop, but veers all over the map, from Diamanda Galas to Sarah McLachlan. - --Neile - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- neile@drizzle.com / neile@sff.net......http://www.sff.net/people/neile The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ......... http://www.ectoguide.org Co-Administrator, Clarion West ............ http://www.clarionwest.org ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Jan 2004 11:15:43 -0500 From: "burp@mindspring.com" Subject: venues in Richmond, VA I just wanted to drop a quick note on Richmond, VA venues. The Be Good Tanyas - Chinatown ***A wonderful blend of Traditional Folk, Alt-Folk with a hint of traditional country. Also the album has a nefty cover of "House of the Rising Sun." Kristofer Astrom & Hidden Truck - Dead end (EP) ***This artist has been my crown jew discover of 2003! A swedish artist who only has 1 EP released in the US so far. I liked him so much I ordered his whole catalog from his record company in Sweden! Every track on this five song EP is a gem! Every song is different, ranging from Alt-Rock to Folk, with a touch of country thorwn in, and some Adult-Alt. The highlight of the EP is probably Astrom's cover of the children's song, "You Are My Sunshine." As quirking as it sounds, this song destoryes any visions of happy children gleefully singing. He has made the song his, and turned it into a sad, depressing folk/blues wonder. I HIGHLY recommend EVERY CD from his catalog! Andrew Bird - Fingerlings ***Former aux member of Squirrel Nut Zipper. Bird plays the violin and does some incredible things with it. His live shows are amazing. His music rangers from swing to true alternative. Erin McKeown - Grand ***Miss McKeown is such a joy! This is another brilliant release from her. Guster - Keep It Together ***Not my favorite release from Guster, but a good one non-the-less. They are a fun group with a nice sound! This album is a little more polished and "happy" compared to others. Liz Phair - Liz Phair ***I know some people who are Liz fans will grown at this. For Liz, this album wasn't very great, and disappointed fans everywhere. But in the overall spectrum of music in 2003, I liked it. I kind of listened to it like this was a new artist I hadn't heard something from before. Rachael Sage - Public Record ***I got my first CD of hers in 97-98. She has some great song writting, and beautiful songs. Glad to see this album is getting some good press, and some airplay in some areas! Ween - Quebec ***Good ole' Ween! This band is a blast to see live! This CD covers the musical spectrum from A-Z. About the only thing it doesn't have is Christian DeathMetal Rap on it. Ben Folds - Speed Graphic (EP) ***One of Two great EPs released by Ben. This one contains my fav song of the bunch, "Wandering." The song appeared in the theater classic *cough* "100 Girls" and I had been searching for it, as the movie didn't have a soundtrack produced. This EP was my salvation! Tori Amos - Tales Of A Librarian ***Tori is my all time fav probably. I discovered her in '94 and have been in love ever since. This is just a greatest hits collection, which isn't too exciting to a long time fan, but it is a great place to start for anyone wanting to try Tori out. Joss Stone - The Soul Sessions ***This gal can sing! Fountains Of Wayne - Welcome Interstate Managers ***I was happy to see a new release from these guys. I had kind of thought they were dead. What a fun group, with witty, intelligent, lyrics, and catchy shameless pop riffs and hooks. I recommend every FoW album! Sarah McLachlan - Afterglow ***I had some big fears about this album before it came out...but now that it is out, I LOVE IT. The reason I love it? Becuase it sounds like Sarah McLachlan. Yes i know that is kind of an odd statement, but after such a long layoff, and having a baby, and with the whole "lilith thing" considered passe, I was affraid she might try to reinvent herself, but if anything she reverted a little in her sound, which in my book is a good thing. This album compares the most to Fumbling Toward Ecstasy, which I would say was the pinnacle of her albums, up to this point. Brenda Weiler - Cold Weather ***Great indie alt-folker, who is finally getting some notice! Patty Griffin - A Kiss in Time ***A live offering from this AMAZING singer and songwritter! I have been in love with her since the first time I hear "Flamming Red" back in 98. What a voice! What lyrics! What a pure joy for your senses!!! ALSO WORTHY OF PRAISE: Soundtrack - Kill Bill Vol. 1 Cat Power - You Are Free Iron & Wine - The Sea and the Rhythm White Stripes - Elephant Jet - Get Born Rufus Wainwright - Want One Belle & Sebastian - Dear Catastrophe Waitress Lucinda Williams - World Without Tears Vienna Teng - Waking Hour (though I think this was a 2002 release) Lizzie West - Holy Road: Freedom Songs Mosquitos - Mosquitos **The Girl from Ipenema meets Indie. Glen Phillips - Live at Largo **Former Toad the Wet Sprocket front man. Suzanne Vega - Retrospective Rhonda Vincent - One Step Ahead Jack Johnson - On And On Catie Curtis - Acoustic Valentine Barenaked Ladies - Everything To Everyone Po' Girl - Po' Girl Kris Delmhorst - Songs for a Hurricane Jen Chapin & Stephan Crump - Open Wide Edie Carey - When I Was Made I know I am forgetting so many. But I think I hit some of my brighter spots! If I muster up the will later, I will post some of my all time favs, to give you all a taste of what's floating around in this mellon of mine!
