Subject: Remy Zero Not really ecto, I realise, but according to Drowned in Sound, Remy Zero have called it a day. Now mostly known for their theme tune to "Smallville", their first two albums were actually really good, showing a lot of promise and a lot of promising influences. Their "Villa Elaine", in particular, is highly recommended. Unfortunately, they followed this up with the arena-styled "Golden Hum", in which they decided to be U2. I saw them tour with this album and, although they were undoubtedly powerful (well, it was the Borderline, kinda small for an arena-style show) the lead singer's dead-eyed, rock star posturing left me cold. Still, they coulda been contenders, and it's a shame to see them call it a day. adam k. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 06 Jan 2004 08:54:05 -0500 From: "Datura Child" Subject: RE: ecto-digest V10 #1 Jeff, I'm so glad the show was good! I love DD--they're a local group, the lead singer is a friend-of-a-friend, and as I said before, I adore thier album, so I've always been rather sad that I was so dissapointed with the one live preformance of theirs I've seen. They haven't been doing any shows in town lately, but maybe the next time they do I'll give them another chance. ~Megan > >Date: Sun, 4 Jan 2004 00:24:52 -0500 >From: Jeff Wasilko >Subject: Daughter Darling in Boston > >On Mon, Dec 29, 2003 at 06:29:58PM -0500, Datura Child wrote: > > I hope you enjoy the show. So you thought 2003 was a bad year in music purchases for you eh? Last week in a private email to smoe Grand Poobah Jeff W I told him that while reading the Ecto "2003 music Top Ten" posts I realized that I hadn't yet purchased ANY music in 2003 and that it would break a string dating back to 1966. When I wrote him it was like 6pm on New Years' Eve and I considered running to Walmart to buy something to keep the streak alive, but I never left the apartment and the streak is over. According to Emilie, "These are very special shows which are more along the lines of a private party than your average club gig. You'll get a chance to sit up close and personal if you dare. "Acoustic Cabaret basically implies a very minimalistic show consisting of myself without any backup, performing mainly at the piano, and playing a very wide selection of material without regard to continuity or logic. These shows are for the precise purpose of trying out new material before small crowds, and getting to practice dancing on a piano. I'm still looking for the right shoes." I would love to see her perform, but it doesn't seem like she has travelled far from her home base in the midwest to date. That may soon change though, as I recently read that she has been named the opening act for Courtney Love's forthcoming tour in 2004. Great movies, great audiences, great setting, skiing if you want it, and a nice rental house in which to crash when you actually have the time to do so. It's a bit more expensive this year than in the past couple years I've gone, due to said last-minute thing -- figure high three figures to low four figures altogether, depending on where you're flying from, how many films you plan to attend, and whether or not you intend to eat -- but it's almost-Burning-Man-caliber fun, not to mention a reaffirmation of one's faith in humanity if (like me) you're occasionally in need of such. My group has got the house from the evening on Thursday 1/15 through noonish on Monday 1/19. If you want in, let me know, and I'll put you in touch with the proper authorities.
