Warren Zevon's "The Wind" makes it to no. 1 (I detect a sympathy vote, there, but he's worth it), Emmylou Harris and John Cale make 2 and 3. Also on the list is Josh Rouse, Hamell on Trial (who i've been hearing a lot about), The Fiery Furnaces (who I've only heard about, recently, on ecto), The Waterboys, Gillian Welch, Lucinda Williams, Fleetwood Mac (eh?), Bowie, Steely Dan, Ed Harcourt...well, it's quite a varied list, and after the Observer's "Music" supplement's year-end issue (Dido, Beyonce, the Darkness in abundance, yawn) it's quite refreshing. Thea Gilmore makes an appearance at 59 (there's also a great review of her Scala gig in the back) which is fine, but she's way behind Bic Runga's icky, twee, gooey Beautiful collision (at 32!) and Cat Power (at 40). In fact, she only just beats out Adam Masterton, who bored and annoyed me when he opened for her. Their top 30 film list is, for me, a bit more contentious, reminding me not only of how few films I got to see this year, but how out of whack my taste is -- Adaptation and Intolerable Cruelty make the cut (but not, mercifully, The Hours), while City of God, which I never got to see, comes in at no. 1. I know, these lists are always a matter of taste and politics, but I tend to use them as a gauge to figure out how far I've diverged from "popular" taste. worth checking out, if not for the list then the interesting Keith Richards interview (wanna hear what he has to say about Mick's knighthood?) as well as interviews with Ryan Adams, Bruce Dern (one of my fave underrated actors) and a neat free cd on the front. my own "best/worst of" list will be posted soon. Betcha can't wait. yours, adam k. PS -- For London ectos: Carina Round plays the Lock (was Dingwalls), I believe on January 29th, although Azure Ray is listed, so maybe she's opening. Thea Gilmore plays the very civilized Bush Hall February 11th. - ----------------------------------------------- This mail sent through http://webmail.zoom.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Dec 2003 21:57:22 +1100 From: andrew fries Subject: Re: Stephanie Dosen / Jennifer Rannells karen hester wrote: >Ghosts, mice and vagabonds by Stephanie Dosen. >samples at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/dosen and >http://www.stephaniedosen.com/ (pretty but the software might not like >your computer). there's a page on her cats too >http://www.stephaniedosen.com/cats.html. > >A fresh sounding album with sketchy acoustic guitar and simple band >arrangements. My Peanut loves to make himself comfortable on my feet and does not appreciate it one bit when I try to move... So after reading that page I liked her already. The music sounds kind of sweet as well... I think I can find a place for her CD in my collection somewhere - it's getting added to the shopping list.
