During the house concert we hosted in Kenosha, we made a recording and allowed guests to contribute a donation (to Happy) for a copy. It was contingent upon Happy hearing the recording and approving it. The approval just happened this weekend, so I am in the process of burning CD's and mailing them out the guests who requested them. I talked to Happy about making the recording generally available to all Ectophiles on the same donation basis, and she agreed. If you're interested in a copy, here are some more details: 1. Remember, this is a home recording. If you're looking for studio-quality sound, this is not the place. I did tweak the recording a bit using some cool geek toys, but it's still not anywhere near what you would buy off the shelf. The idea is to give fans an idea of how Happy sounds live in a living room, to help support her and to encourage her to keep doing it! 2. Three songs she performed at the concert will NOT be included. One because I screwed up during the recording, and I couldn't recover it enough to make it sound ok. Two because Happy was not pleased with the performance, and did not want them included. (That leaves 13 songs, including her Kate cover "And Dream of Sheep"!!!). 3. The suggested donation is $10. If that's too steep for your budget, then $10 is only a suggestion. I will collect the donations, and give 100% of them to Happy. If possible, I would prefer a blank CD and a postage-paid mailer so I can just pop it back in the mail to you. If that's not possible, I wouldn't turn down a few extra bucks to cover the blank CD, mailer and postage. :-) 4. I would like to send Happy the donations by January 15. 5. International Ectophiles -- please contact me directly, and we'll work something out. 6. Reply to this email if you're interested, and I'll give you my address and any other details you may need. 7. I'm not sure what kind of response I will get, but I will try hard to do a fast turnaround. This is the busy holiday season, so please be patient if I'm not as speedy as I would like to be. A trip to the post office will probably be my biggest bottleneck, so those sending me a pre-paid return mailer will get faster turnaround (hint hint). Happy Holidays to all. - -Chip p.s. Unless some artistic soul volunteers, there will be no fancy liner notes. Probably just a black-and-white track listing. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Dec 2003 18:45:08 -0800 From: raven@igc.org Subject: Best of 2003 I had a shorter than usual year, I spent some time in the hospital, so this was a strange year... also, I generally listen to mostly women singer-songwriters, so this may be a strange list to you, but here it is: 1. Pamela Means - Single Bullet Theory - 01 May 2003 Without doubt this is my favorite album of the year. I met Pamela in another state the first day she had the album, and I've listened every day since... extraordinary. While previous albums she's done have included 2 to 4 live tracks, and one album was all live tracks, this is 100% studio, and she has good musicians (for the tracks that use them). And while she has always used acoustic guitar before, she uses an electric for the first time, on a beautiful version of Billy Holiday's "Strange Fruit", a particularly excellent version of the song. There are the usual political songs, in fact her politics have gotten stronger than ever, and that suits my politics just fine. There are also four touching love songs, all the more touching perhaps, because I know the person they are about... plus two beautiful instrumentals to focus on her extraordinary guitar playing... all in all an excellent album. 2. The WAIFS - Up All Night - 13 Jan 2003 A trio from Australia, this album debuted quietly in January, it reached GOLD sales in four weeks, PLATINUM by October, pretty remarkable for a bunch of independent musicians, they are even better live, especially when they add harmonica, they are hot! 3. Noe Venable - The World Is Bound By Secret Knots - 2003 I have also seen Noe Venable live for a few years and I have always loved her, she is not your "typical" folk singer, instead producing a variety of unique but breathtaking sounds, she has gotten better with this album. 4. Rickie Lee Jones - The Evening Of My Best Day - 07 Oct 2003 Everything she touches is unique to her, some are better than others, but this is one of the strongest she has produced, I have trouble going a day without listening. 5. Gillian Welch - Soul Journey - 03 June 2003 There is little I can add to Gillian Welch, everything she touches is excellent, I can buy any Gillian album without first hearing it, and know that I will get a great album... this is no exception! After those five, I'll just go alphabetically, it's too hard ranking them and it changes anyway: :) 6. Edie Carey - When I Was Made - 20 Jan 2004 (but available now) 7. Kris Delmhorst - Songs For A Hurricane - 2003 8. Stacey Earle/Mark Stuart - Never Gonna Let You Go - 03 June 2003 9. The Dresden Dolls - A is for Accident - 2003 and The Dresden Dolls - Debut Studio Album - 2003 Several have written better than me, they are extraordinary! 10. Patty Larkin - Red = Luck - 2003 11. Erin McKeown - Grand - 10 June 2003 12. Lucinda Williams - World Without Tears - 08 April 2003 And these from late in 2002 (but they are so good): 13. Joy Askew - ECHO - 10 Sept 2002 Like others, everything she touches is good, usually exotic, always an experience, I have never been disappointed, she is even better live. 14. Martine Locke - Fly - Nov 2002 A surprise this was so good, Martine is an old friend from Australia, now moved to the United States, this was one of three albums I was allowed to have when I was in the hospital, and I listened every day, a variety of styles and genres, some of them very innovative. 15. Erika Luckett - The New Orleans Sessions - 2002 Another friend, she has always been better live than on record, but this album changes that, it is very good! Excuse the typos, I have lost some of my vision. - -- John ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Dec 2003 05:42:47 +0100 (CET) From: Yngve Hauge Subject: Happy on LoLo Records Hi, Just got an email about Happy joining the LoLo Records label. I always thought of Asheville as a sort of undiscovered haven for all thing ectophilic. I'm curious which local artists you would consider to be in this category. Billy Jonas immediately comes to mind. Anne Lalley too, though I haven't heard her in quite a while. Also, my former sweetie and current friend, Jamuna. Lots of others... Large chunks of any of the Lake Eden Arts Festivals would also apply. Who have you encountered that fits the bill? Shameless self-promotion: If you're out New Years Eve, I'll be playing bouzouki in the back-up band for the belly dancers at Jerusalem Garden. I also play solo piano at Cafe Soleil quite a bit. I always include this on my list as the most romantic movie of the '80s, if not all time. Soundtrack by Tom Waits and Crystal Gayle, proving the most unlikely pairing conceivable can still work. Michael ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Dec 2003 00:54:19 -0600 (CST) From: kerrywhite@webtv.net (kerry white) Subject: Its About Time... Hi, For some time now I have been thinking about writing to Ecto about someone I have found several years ago: Gabrielle Roth and the Mirrors. Google this for lots of info. Google just Gabrielle Roth and you will find info about her bodywork workshops using the 5 rhythms. Musically, she uses percussion layers to achive a "colorfield effect" akin to Sheila Chadra's Drones, but with more energy. She has put out a LP/CD every year or so from 1982. Some are very Kicky and some are very somber - written for Yoga. I have noticed that she uses about 5 layers of percussion in most everything she does. One CD, Endless Waves Vol.1 has a format like a relaxation tape except you are to be standing and she is going from moving the head to the neck, etc. Side 1 has the words throughout w/ the music. Side 2 has a variation on the same music w/ just the song segments mentioned aloud as each starts. I should have reccommended it for Yngve's workout tape. Check out free samples at CDnow, etc. I also have been experimenting with different free borrows from the Library and have discovered: Natasha Atlas from Morocco. Middle east rythms mixed with many other influences, including Black Urban sounds. Sometimes she is like Peter Gabriel in her levels of Production. One reviewer called her "the Kate Bush of Morocco". One cut was very much like a Danielle Dax piece. Another find is VAS. This is very much in the Sheila Chandra approach to Indian music. There are 3 CDs and I have heard the first 2. Wonderful! I also picked up the Live Varttina. I hope someone more erudite than I will get some of this and write more. Neile: quote anything you want for the Guide. KrW I'm Peter Pan! I'm perpetually young!!
