Let's start with a broad but key point. When discussing why some artists fall out of favor let's not forget that various explanations are not mutually exclusive. Often we fall into the trap of the three blind men trying to describe an elephant based on their own (and by necessity) limited experience (feeling one small part of the very large beast) and losing sight of the fact that there are many potential explanations particularly with a group as diverse and thoughtful as this one. A few possible explanations then. 1) the listener has changed (grown?) and the artist hasn't. Probably most commen in our youth when we evolve so quickly. 2)The artist has changed and the listener hasn't (or has changed in a different direction). This could be artistic differences or selling out (making a product as opposed to "art'; and I use that term broadly). 3) Preconceptions. I have sometimes bought an album (again showing my age) by a favorite artist only to find that I did not care at all for some new musical direction. One time I was so dissapointed in an lp ( Bill Nelson's " Optimism" ) that I was going to give it to a friend (and fellow huge Nelson afficianado). When he next came over I played the new album for him and, freed of my expectations of what a Bill Nelson lp should sound like I found that I loved it . It quickly became one of my favorites. You know I never did mention my intentions to my friend. Sorry this is so long but believe it or not there is a lot more I could add but will I refrain. Maybe next time ( be forwarned ) np- Elastic (Joshua Redman) PS:A great album for all you jazz fans on the list. Now I know how Adam K feels addressing the prog rock fans on the list. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Dec 2003 08:45:33 -0800 (PST) From: Neile Graham Subject: Ecto and pop The other thing we should remember is that very few of us _want_ to dislike music. I know that I'd far rather be knocked out by an album than bored or annoyed or even worse be totally unmoved. I'd far rather rave about how much I love something than how much I hate it. We love music, otherwise I'm sure none of us would bother to be here. - --Neile - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- neile@drizzle.com / neile@sff.net......http://www.sff.net/people/neile The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ......... http://www.ectoguide.org Co-Administrator, Clarion West ............ http://www.clarionwest.org ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 05 Dec 2003 20:06:15 -0500 From: Michael Curry Subject: Variety (was Re: The Ecto list & the pop market) At 09:26 AM 12/3/03 -0800, Neile Graham wrote: > >Ecto has also a strong soft pop & folkie singer-songwriter emphasis of >latter years, and this isn't the kind of music I personally like to listen >to much. I think it's great when ectophiles mention artists that they heard about elsewhere, but they think ectos might like. I doubt I'd ever have ended up with albums by Daughter Darling or Petracovich (both of which I think are great) unless you, Neile, or others on the list, had taken the time to mention them. Thanks for the links! I used the RA ones, and they played just fine. Now I find myself....frightened. But in that odd sort of Marianne Nowottny way, which means I should probably buy the album. *grin* Michael np: Fiery Furnace ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 06 Dec 2003 01:03:17 -0500 From: meredith Subject: dresden dolls Hi, Speaking of music that's frightening in a deliciously wonderful way ... :) Dresden Dolls are a duo from Boston who have probably gotten some press here already, but I just missed it because I'm an idiot. woj and I drove Don Keller up to the Iron Horse the other night to see them after an extended period of meaning to but never quite getting to it, and it was one of the best live shows we've seen this year. (They're pretty much tied with Venus Hum for "musical discovery of 2003" at this point, too.) Imagine Kristeen Young and Veda Hille's musical love twins. Or what would happen if you opened up a music box in hell. They describe themselves as "Brechtian punk cabaret", which I suppose sums it up about as well as can be. Amanda plays piano and sings (she has doctored the logo on her Kurtzweil SP-88 so it says "KURTWEILL" ), and Brian plays drums and provides occasional backing vocals. That's the group, and the amount of sound the two of them can produce is truly impressive. Amanda is an accomplished pianist, and her voice is quite powerful, sounding remarkably like Fiona Apple at times. Brian is an incredible drummer -- he makes it look effortless, and gets an amazing dynamic range out of his kit. The subject matter of the songs is sometimes quite disturbing, yet also quite witty (for example the brilliant tune "Coin Operated Boy"). On top of this, they perform in costume -- Brian is done up like the emcee from "Cabaret", complete with white facepaint and mime-like makeup topped off by a black bowler hat, and Amanda wears a little black cocktail dress with striped stockings held up by garters, and similar face makeup. I highly recommend them to anyone who likes music that falls into the dissonant/wonderfully weird category, with occasional veers into the "difficult listening" range. If they're playing anywhere near you, *go*. It's worth it, trust me. And check out their web site -- it very well represents the feel of what they're all about. http://www.dresdendolls.com =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V9 #343 **************************
