I must say that at times I see a bit of an elitist "We >are so much cooler than the average music listener" attitude here... I didn't perceive anyone here to be snobbish-- I just thought we were discussing the state of the pop music market. My concern is that radio is dumbed down to be less than the sum of its parts. When I have "girlie day" with my 6 year old niece, we pile into my pickup truck and barrel down the road singing at the top of our lungs to radio Disney. I don't like all the songs they play and they are hyper-redundant, but I think it's important for kids to learn that one of the joys of going anywhere is howling along to the radio. This means I put aside my tastes for the sake of a joyous shared experience. Also, I don't have to worry about her hearing obscenity in the music or between songs on RD. We look up music on Amazon and listen to samples, she tells me what she likes, and I buy her cds of her own choosing. She loves Aaron Carter, Hampster Dance, and Trout Fishing in America, but her ultimate favorite is Johnny Cash. I think that is great. She's not shoe-horned into thinking there is only one perfect kind of sound to enjoy. As she grows up, she will have a broad frame of reference to serve as a plinth for increasing degrees of sophistication. Unlike my niece, people who only listen to pop radio get such a narrow slice of the spectrum generally, that they will have difficulty fully digesting all the beauty that is out there to be heard. Radio stations I have heard in England mix it up in a way I find much more appealing than what goes on here. You may hear the latest Kylie Minogue, next a song from Big Country, and then a Motown classic. This makes music feel more like a continuum, rather than a flat earth that has-beens are ever slipping over the edge of, never to be heard again... ...oh, and bless anyone as dedicated to musical excellence as Celine Dion is. Her many years of perfecting her craft are evident in every note she sings, and I can understand the tremendous appeal of that... Being relatively new to the list, I haven't read anyone slamming Jewel or Sarah or Tori. I don't know what the tenor of opinion was here about Scarlet's Walk, but that cd for me excelled all my previous favorites of hers. I think motherhood suits Tori and she has gentled into the strength and ease of a lioness. Still sadly wise but less wounded and more bold. It was wondrous to hear that glory - like sails billowing out with wind and realizing their true breadth. I don't begrudge these three huge success, nor do I begrudge the public these soulful and profound songwriters. I pity the loss of privacy they must suffer with the greater popularity, but they asked to be heard and considered. This is the price sometimes. I think they are women who are having a tremendous impact with their messages, and I think that can only be a good thing for people now and generations to come. ...and while I'm on the subject of outstanding music, Happy's vocals in the title track of "Many Worlds are born Tonight" are transcendent. That sound is like audio velvet. It reminds me too of First Nations traditional singing, which employs tone clusters to great effect. When I'm working on my art, I listen to that cd more than any other--that groove so fits my creativity. So now a confession, I first bought a cassette of Rhodes Songs in 1993 and played it until I wore it out, and never replaced it. I finally purchased the cd earlier this year, and hearing it anew was such a revelation that I purchased "Many Worlds" right away. What should I buy next? Any advice? Obviously, I need to buy them all. I'm in the process of buying Many Worlds cds for my nearest and best on my Christmas list. It's too good not to share. Because the needy is everyone. It's great to be here. I'm enjoying the discussions immensely. Rita _________________________________________________________________ Gift-shop online from the comfort of home at MSN Shopping! Examples being Sarah, Jewel and even Tori. Do they get the negative press because their music is really not that good anymore OR because they have gained mass acceptance and they aren't OUR darlings anymore? Now we have to share them with the world and the reason is because they SOLD OUT to commerciality. That is why they now have this wider audience. I really wonder sometimes. Perhaps the answer is somewhere in between. >> Yeah, I am going to put my money on early Sarah, Jewel and Tori all being generally better than a lot of their newer work. For example, FUMBLING TOWARDS ECSTASY is to me an unbelievably intense and multidimensional record. SURFACING, while also great, inched a little bit closer to normal soft pop. AFTERGLOW, which I also have been enjoying, is even more normal. It seems like a lot of our favorite artists don't remain consistently mind-blowing into their elder years. I think this might partly be because people just get more laid back as they age. As for Jewel, well, I get a pretty stimulating rawness out of her first record. The vocal take on "Save Your Soul" sounds like someone who has been living in the trunk of their car. "Intuition," doesn't move me that way. I like it more than a lot of the new dance tunes I've heard lately, and I appreciate that Jewel is going with some new vibes. But it sounds very squeaky clean to me, very smoothly executed without many rocky emotions. I think it's pretty clever the way she's mocking corporate candy pop while at the same time exploiting it. joe joe and ellen music http://www.jotdot.net/joeandellen http://www.mp3.com/joeandellen ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V9 #340 **************************
