In response to Meredith's query about Cantaloop , the whole title is Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia). I point this out only because the rest of the title might jar some people's memories about the "lyrics". The song, by the way, is based on an instrumental: Herbie Hancock's classic "Cantaloupe Island". As for art vs. pop music, let's face it, there is always some music being made for the joy of making music and some made for strictly commercial concerns. And label owned tunesmiths writing for label owned "talent" predates even my long ago youth. This system has produced a great deal of memorable music as well as countless forgettable (and even regrettable) songs. And as great as Hoagy Carrmicheal's classic 'Stardust" is I suspect a look at the pop charts from that time would reveal more than there share of clunkers. I personally don't care for the most of the genre's that dominate modern pop charts but these always change with successive generations of youth (read: new consumers) since these are the people who drive the "business" of music. At the risk of overgeneralising I think that teenagers tend to seek something new(from older generations) and the same(as their peers). These same factors shaped our own tastes in/views on pop music in our youth. And of course let's not forget that modern programming and attempts at hitmaking tend to oversatuarate us even with things we do like. Which is one reason most ectophiles ( I suspect) avoid commercial radio to begin with. Apologies too if this was an overly simplistic rant but I felt it addressed recent topics np:Watkins Ale- Baltimore Consort ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Nov 2003 18:26:14 +0000 From: "R.L Smith" Subject: on second thought... Sweet vibrato, piano, Toronto, 2001? http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/246/lindi.html? I could swear she was in the Guide, but I don't see her listed... Well, she's back in action. I recently visited her website at www.lindi.org and here's what she had to say about her new stuff: - ---------quoted text----------- I am currently recording some new material with producer James Robertson. We just recently recorded a cover version of The Door's PEOPLE ARE STRANGE. I'm going to see if I can put a clip of it up online so people can hear what sort of style I'm doing now. It's not too much of a stray from the first c.d. My music is still quite dark and moody... perhaps a little more sinister and a little heavier.. more guitar driven...more ROCK! I am very excited about it. I hope to be releasing something in 2004. Mostly I have been writing new songs and recording. I will be playing a few intimate shows here and there just so people don't think I've dropped off the planet..but also because I love playing live it's my favorite thing to do and part of me just needs to do it regardless. I will keep everyone updated on the progress of the recording and let people know when a possible release date will be for 2004. - ---------/quoted text----------- Okay, here's part II of my email: Another amazing young Canadian talent, Andrew Haughton. I don't really know if his stuff really fits into the Ecto genre, but it has great atmosphere nonetheless, and I think that's what's drawing me to it. Many of the songs have a head-bobbing, simple groove to them, and Andrew's vocal style changes from song to song, but he sounds great in all of them. He has three songs up at MP3.com that you'll need to rush over to listen to (as MP3.com will wipe them out in a day or so). This is Andrew's older stuff. My personal favorite is "It's Not Too Late," with its beautiful, simple keyboards and catchy melody. Here's the URL: http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/351/andrew_haughton.html There are also three songs up at Garagebands.com, of which "Swimming with the Sharks" is my favorite. They're not all great (thus is the hazard of using digital without a flash), but I am proud of a couple of them. Local shops have set up Lotr themed window displays - fashion shops with eleven eared mannequins, furry feet, and my fav is a florist window hung with a lovely giant rotating engraved ring over white tulips, with quotations painted on the window. There are giant advertisements everywhere for New Zealand Post's lotr themed stamps. A several story Gandalf hangs from their main office. A several story shooting Legolas hangs in Courteney Place, and the bar across the road has a giant arrow embedded in it, with mock cracks where the point enters. One of the cuter ads is a enormous letter with NZ post lotr stamps, addressed to Mt Doom; the envelope has a ring shaped lump in it! The troll from the first year premiere is now in the Civic Centre, raising his club to hit council workers hanging outside on their smokos. He is attached to the wall just outside of the chief executive's office! Gollum, from the second year premiere, is at the airport, his spindley fingers grasping for the ring. There are costumes from the 'goodies' and 'badies' at each end of the airport terminal, and props from the movies (a hobbit living room, thrones, orc ironmongers etc) set up behind plastic barriers which are perfectly designed to foil photography, grr. This year the Embassy theatre and Reading theatres have several tonne giant Fell (sp?) beasts hanging perched on top. Since so many New Line and other staff are coming, they're showing the movie itself in several theatres. Our national airline has repainted some of its fleet, so if a 747 emblazoned with Viggo is your thing, and it must be many people's thing, they're the people to fly. One of the planes is doing a low flyover the Embassy theatre during the parade, but hopefully not too low. Last night I was returning overdue books at the library when I heard screams from the other side of the square. Howard Shore was conducting his score with the symphony orchestra that evening, and girlies had lined up outside the Michael Fowler Centre to sqweeeem and squeeeeem everytime a 'star' arrived. It was funny watching a hunched Orlando Bloom run through the quivering girls - during the Fellowship parade, when he came over to our side we asked "so, who do you play?" The actors signed on to promote these movies years ago, and recently renegotiated, since some are stars now, and they got an even better deal than they were aiming for. Wish I knew someone going to 'the party'. The first year my flatmate was a journalist on good terms with them so he got to go to the hobbit village party - you entered through a bilbo-like house, crouched over and admiring all the props, and then you came out into the village, set up like Bilbo's party. There were falling leaves, tents on the village green, lots of yummy free food and drink, but it was the staging that was so amazing on the video I saw. My flatmate isn't on PJ's good side anymore so no invites for him! I'll sneak away from work early tomorrow to see the parade. You can watch the parade and ceremonies on webcam at http://www.wellingtonnz.com/cam/. Our Monday is tomorrow, America's Sunday. Off to wander around in the sunshine. It'll no doubt be windy and raining by Monday, as always happens during these events. Karen __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
