Now, there are tons of Roy Wood anthologies out there, but this one was a bit different, gathering together his later and more obscure material from the late 70s to the mid 80s. Its a treat, because a lot of this stuff has never seen the light of the digital age, or even barely seen the light at all. But, to start at the beginning: One of the great lost geniuses of British rock, in my opinion, he founded not just one but THREE bands: the Move, Electric Light Orchestra and Wizzard, writing songs and playing most of the instruments for all of them. Along the way he created a sprawling, chaotic, over-egged beast of a sound that mixes Spector, Elvis and Brian Wilson with a the sound of an entire marching band falling down several flights of stairs. He racked up further hits, and turned out two beautifully diverse solo albums on which he even painted the designs on the sleeve. In the late 70s, bands such as Cheap Trick were citing him as a major influence, but the 80s saw him fade from view in a welter of contractual problems. Hes still out there, though, gigging relentlessly, working on and producing his own music, but god knows where it appears a trip down Amazon reveals mostly anthologies and reissues, his most recent studio album being from 1985. Now, no mistake, there are a lot of problems with Roy his 50s fixation which can become somewhat repetitive and derivative (especially if you spent your childhood being subjected to Golden Oldie stations and high school 50s Days replete with Sock Hops), his rather muddied self-production, his distinctive voice and a definite loss of his 70s creative, driving edge but hes done enough in his life to earn him a place in every music-lovers heart, and if youve ever been lucky enough to hear the breathtakingly beautiful Way Beyond the Rain, issued, here, for the first time on cd, youll know the potential that he has and wonder why you havent heard more from him. This collection also includes tracks from the unreleased (until recently) Wizzard album, Main Street, which reveals a jazzier side to the man, as well as a guest shot by John Bonham, a few rare singles and yes a lot of 50s-type rock-n-roll revivalism, delivered with gusto and joy. Hes a cult figure, but he should be an icon. Oh, and for the ecto connection: he was once Annie Haslams partner, and produced and wrote her first solo album while she guested on several of his. Oh, and he has one line on the original album of "Evita". adam k. - ----------------------------------------------- This mail sent through http://webmail.zoom.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Nov 2003 23:03:47 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Noe Venable Hi, You heard it here first ... Date: Wed, 26 Nov 2003 01:46:02 +0000 Hi, all... Thought I'd better announce this before some enterprising individual stumbles upon the umbrellamusic site... ;) Some of you know that I do video reports for Canadian indie music website UmbrellaMusic.com (which is the content arm of the well-known MapleMusic.com)... Well, since earlier this year, they have been hosting the a monthly 'UmbrellaLive' series at the Rivoli in Toronto that feature local and Canadian indie artists... I usually organize a benefit show at C'est What around this time of year, but this year, I (in the guise of Rant Mode On Productions) am joining forces with Umbrella to produce the holiday edition of UmbrellaLive for next month, and we have come up with a real doozy of a show. We're still working on some of the details, but Emm Gryner (with band) and Sarah Slean (solo) will be headlining. This is the only date Emm will be playing before she heads out on Jann Arden's Canadian tour, and also the last chance to catch Sarah for several months, as she will be recording her new album and is not certain yet when it will come out. Details are as follows: UmbrellaMusic and Rant Mode On Productions present UmbrellaLive December 17, 2003 8:30 pm doors $10 Advance tickets available from maplemusic.com A portion of the proceeds to the Toronto Disaster Relief Committee Featuring Emm Gryner, Sarah Slean, and TBA (the 'TBA' is going to be great as well!) Hope to see some of you there... I recommend ordering tickets from Maple just to be safe, because it's bound to sell out very quickly. Keep in mind that the Rivoli only holds 120 ('official' capacity - it easily holds 200, but the Toronto clubs are a bit freaked out by the fire marshal these days ;P). (If you go to umbrellamusic.com, the link to ordering tickets is in the right-hand sidebar ad.) We will be featuring tracks from the artists playing the show on the site over the next few weeks, so keep checking back! - - Tab. - ----- End forwarded message ----- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Nov 2003 23:33:35 -0500 From: aural gratification Subject: Barney "Terra Incognita" Parker Well................I'm wiped But the good news is that Mr. Parker decided to beat all the odds and stick around a little longer. THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts. Barn had his ear canal removed (ouch) but also with it, his problems. He is in recovery til Friday and will have to wear a radar dish for a couple of weeks. I'll try to post a picture unless he's too embarrassed about it. He thanks everyone and has declined a phone in his room, otherwise he'd call everyone personally. If I understand this correctly it will work with "other" OS's through a Java client, connecting through its Ethernet docking station (comes standard with the player). Ogg Vorbis support alone makes it interesting to me, since my entire music collection is encoded in this format; I also imagine (and hope) it means lack of any Digitally Crippled hoops to jump through. I've been pretty lukewarm about iPods and the like, but this one seems exactly like something I'd want: no rubbish, no "features" I'd never want or use, no FM radios or recorders - just decent playback! It's cheaper than iPod, too. Here is the review I just read: http://phataudio.org/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=195 And on another note, Go Barney, go!
