I promise you won't be disappointed. Also, if you know of anyone else in those areas who might be interested, please pass this bit along. Cahuenga Blvd (323) 461-2040 http://www.thehotelcafe.com/first $6 ****** Thanks to Jeff for sending that message about the Kim Fox/Lili Haydn show on Wednesday. I was planning on going to see Mike Doughty, former lead singer for Soul Coughing, but opted for Kim and Lili instead. I'm glad I did. The order of performers was Terra Naomi, Lili, then Kim, and each played for about an hour. Terra was ok, but her set was marred by sound problems. Lili knocked my knickers off. I didn't realize what an entrancing voice she has (SOMEone still has my copy of her first album that I lent them 5 years ago *grin*); all I knew was that she was a bad ass violinist. Accompanying her was a tablas player, a guitarist, and a harpist, with her boyfriend sitting next to the sound board, working a minimixer with delay effects for her vocals. The songs were beautiful, imbued with many middle-eastern textures and scorched with Lili's voluptuous violin playing. This was my second time seeing Kim this fall, and my increased familiarty with her material allowed me to really soak up her performance. At times she reminds me of Suddenly, Tammy!, other times like Cindylee Berryhill and Sam Phillips blended with Shivaree. Her latest album, "Return to Planet Earth" took a little getting used to with the poppy production featuring touches of 70's disco and 80's erasure-like synths on many of the songs, but now I find it irresistible. Shame on Jeff for missing her when she was in the Boston area earlier this year. Thursday I went to a Berklee showcase which was fairly mediocre except for Adrianne, who keeps getting better everytime I see her. She really has a knack for writing interesting, hooky, yet meaty songs. Friday was Susan Werner in Santa Monica, which is always a treat. Blues guitarist/singer Keb'Mo' is a fan, and I've spotted him in the audience the past couple of times she's been through. The last time she was here in January, he accompanied her on her encore. This time, for the encore, he started accompanying her on a blues riff song called "Light Sleeper" that Susan does on the piano; however halfway through, as Keb was soloing after a verse, Susan picked up her second guitar and they traded licks back and forth, then made up their own blues verses that were pretty funny. A real gem of a show. I initiated my cousin Tony, his girlfriend Margaret, and Margaret's cousin into the fandom of Susan, too, so bonus points for me. :) And tonight, I checked in at the Hotel Cafe to catch Sylvie Lewis and Splendid. Splendid, of course, is the duo featuring Angie Hart of Frente and her husband Jesse Tobias. There was a packed house for Splendid, who played at 9. I have yet to get their albums, so I wasn't familiar with most of their songs, but they did play two that they performed for Buffy, even introducing "Blue" as the one that their friend Joss Whedon wrote. They also pulled out Bizarre Love Triangle. Much of the crowd stayed after their set and got to see Sylvie put on a dynamite show, starting with an acapella rendition of "Roxanne" that left the room dead silent. In a good way, of course. She had different players backing her up, including a drummer, a harmonica-ist, and a pianist who also did harmonies. Sylvie continues to floor me with her supple vocals and her ever-growing cache of killer tunes. We're gonna try to work something out where I'll help her do some recording for her next album. Does anyone have any live tracks from the recent concerts available yet? Along with Happy's permission, of course. As a suggestion to Happy, I'd say rent a mobile recording machine, tape a concert or two and put them out on CD. It's got to be cheaper than studio time and once mastered, she could print them out on CD-R for all that most of her fans would care, so there would be low or limited risk (at least to this semi-ignorant fan). In addition to the two dates mentioned, she is opening for Vienna Teng, Nov 26, at the Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse, so you have TWO chances to hear her in Berkeley, although Nov 28 is a longer show. I am promoting both of Kyler's Berkeley shows on my web site. - -- John ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Nov 2003 00:45:46 +0000 From: "Lyle Howard" Subject: Texas Ectos Howdy, Rita was wondering about Happy coming to Texas. I live in Denton and would love to have her do a house concert here, but we couldn't squeeze too many people into my duplex (and the preparatory cleaning would be a six-month task). I have suggested to Happy and posse that Dan's Bar, here, would be the equivalent of a living room concert. I can't imagine Dan not wanting to host her. I also suggested Uncle Calvin's in Dallas, but that sort of thing couldn't be done at the drop of a hat. Uncle Calvin's has high-octane people coming and going on a regular basis and they thus probably have a schedule set in stone for six months to a year. If anyone in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area wants to do a house concert, I would be happy to help. Ms. Rhodes was frequently played on KERA (Dallas) in the 90's so she is not an unknown commodity here. Yes, there are Texas ecotpians. I thing Gshell is a Texan, too. And there are several Texans out there who have abandoned the homeland for lesser states north of the Red River border. Things might get better, but I wouldn't guarantee it. So, if you are an artist who held works there - hurry up. Make backups. Go visit your friends with a cheap cable access and see if you can persuade them to pull your stuff for youy and make backups on CD-R or DVD-R media. If you aren't, but you know someone - go tell them. If you have the abovementioned cheap access, especially with unmetered bandwidth - look around, perhaps you can save someone years' worth of creativity. I'd be happy to help myself, but the only unmetered access I have here is a dialup account, and where it's metered, it's like around 40-to-60 $$ per gigabyte. - -- /\/\ike ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Nov 2003 19:09:06 -0700 From: Neal Copperman Subject: Re: Texas Ectos My apologies for overlooking the existance of Tectophiles. I should have immediately known they were out there, just based on the fact that I was about to publicly say I didn't know of any :) Uncle Calvin's books about 10 months out for headliners and about 4 months out for openers. They actually pay a fare wage for openers. Perhaps not enough to inspire a trip to Texas, but fair for a modest opening set. I am friends with the guy who books Calvin's and would be willing to put in a good word if anything were being put together. neal np: Cool Weather - Sloan Wainwright At 12:45 AM +0000 11/24/03, Lyle Howard wrote: >Howdy, > >Rita was wondering about Happy coming to Texas. > >I live in Denton and would love to have her do a house concert here, >but we couldn't squeeze too many people into my duplex (and the >preparatory cleaning would be a six-month task). Heh, as someone in that thread pointed out, "It's the first time in known history that a big corporation doesn't transfer personal information (and works) and people STILL complain." I think I have to agree with this, and also with another comment to the effect that if the artist didn't care enough about their own music to keep their own backups, why should we care? Maybe I'm just bitter. I used to like mp3.com and I still have some of their mp3 CDs. It was a cool idea once but it went off the rails a long time ago and it's final demise feels more like a relief than anything else. - --------------------------------------------------------------------- "Fascism should rightly be called Corporatism as it is a merge of state and corporate power" - -- Benito Mussolini - -- 14:48:49 up 3 days, 1:20, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.02, 0.00-- ------------------------------ Date: 23 Nov 2003 20:20:25 -0800 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Re: NB: MP3.COM archives to be destroyed On Sun, 2003-11-23 at 19:54, Andrew Fries wrote: > I think I have to agree with this, and also with another comment to the > effect that if the artist didn't care enough about their own music to > keep their own backups, why should we care? > > Maybe I'm just bitter. BTW, I've started looking at some other places that do burn-on-demand CD-R creation and fulfillment, since I've had 3 albums on mp3.com . Mixonic at www.mixonic.com and Cafe Press at www.cafepress.com seem initially promising. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V9 #331 **************************
