It's for a local radio station that normally plays nothing but corporate modern radio rock. If enough people vote for some good records, there could be some actual great music played on a corporate radio station. Wow. Some of you folks might want to check this out. http://kisw.com/_vti_bin/shtml.exe/promotions/albumsthatmatter/index.html joe joe and ellen music http://www.jotdot.net/joeandellen http://www.mp3.com/joeandellen ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Nov 2003 07:40:15 -0800 (PST) From: Craig Gidney Subject: Fwd: [TAG-DC] Hot Hands : A Tribute to Throwing Muses and Kristin Hersh - --- "JS (Jim) Adams" wrote: > To: TAG-DC@yahoogroups.com > From: "JS (Jim) Adams" > Date: Fri, 21 Nov 2003 13:11:52 -0000 > Subject: [TAG-DC] Hot Hands : A Tribute to Throwing > Muses and Kristin Hersh > > Kuma-Chan Records is proud to announce the release > of "HOT HANDS : A > Tribute to Throwing Muses and Kristin Hersh" > compilation CD that > includes many bear muscians and queer artistsans. > > Contributors include : Xiu Xiu; HypoFixx; The Blood > Group; NYC's > Flare; Dirty Power [ fronted by Pansy Divison > guitarist Patrick > Goodwin ]; Phil Locke; PDSexton; Waycross; John > Ashfield; and > a 'mystery' bonus track by BLK w/ BEAR. > > The official release is late December 2003, but you > can buy the disc > now at the Kuma-Chan on-line store. I was surprised that the whole band played at the house concerts. I thought that Hansford and Bon would take a break and it would just be Happy and Bob. It was interesting to hear that the 4 of them not only fit, but sounded great. Not too loud, and not too overwhelming. >Thanks to Vickie, I can now indulge my Happy foot fetish. Thanks for mentioning that. I wondered if anyone would like those shots. Happy has cute bent toes. She and Uma Thurman should get together and do a foot movie. I forgot to ask her what her shoe size these days is (old time Ecto question: what's your shoe size?) >And tell me this: What is Happy saying while displaying her left hand in >those photos? "This finger is still not working right." Or: "It's all >better now." It's not all better now. That finger is completely numb. It affects her guitar playing. I asked her if there was anything she couldn't play (meaning specific songs) and she said "besides the guitar?" :-( We were standing around after the show and someone asked if he could see her hand. I wanted to see it too but was afraid to ask. I thought it was cheeky and I was too shocked to take in her exact words, but it was along the lines of "oh sure!" and she stuck her hand right out. No hesitation at all. Everybody gathered around to look and I took the pictures. She was very amused. You can't see the zigzag scar very well in the photos I took, but it's very visible in person. She gave us some gory details about the surgery and I just felt my heart break for her. Why does all this bad stuff happen to this amazing person? >Happy seems to be having a good time (photo evidence). I hope that >continues with all her performances. She did seem to be having a grand time at all 3 shows. I was so proud of her! She was on KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic yesterday - You can hear her (and see her) in the studio in the MBE archive. She was the first performer to play in their new revamped studio.....and they video stream them now....as well as offer the interviews audio only. Anyway, check her out.....really a fabulous new find. I'm not generally a punk-rock sort of girl, but there's something about Henry Rollins that makes me take notice. Counting Crows, _August and Everything After_. I've got a huge soft spot for this album, and I'll (finally) be seeing this band for the first time next month. (Yay!) Cowboy Junkies, _The Trinity Sessions_. I would've preferred it if _Black-Eyed Man_ were on the list, but I'll take Trinity. Given a church and one (not even very good) microphone, look at what this band can do. Margo's voice soars, Michael's lyrics are perfect. Elvis Costello, _My Aim is True_. Oh, Elvis. No-one does bittersweet like you do. Nine Inch Nails, _Pretty Hate Machine_. It occurs to me that this album plus my Black Flag choice earlier gives a different view of my musical tastes than my CD shelf does. R.E.M., _Automatic for the People_. Every moment of this album is perfect. _Out of Time_ was a contender, and it would've made it if you had replaced 'Shiny Happy People' (which I do enjoy, but it should've been a b-side) with the achingly gorgeous 'Fretless' [1]. This is one of my desert-island discs. Tori Amos, _Under the Pink_. Maybe this album matters only because it defines a specific period for me. Maybe it matters because it encapsulates so much. Maybe it doesn't matter why it matters; all I know is that it resonates more than anything should. Every Tori album has a song that means something to me (same for Cowboy Junkies), but this album and its bee-sides hit too close to home sometimes. /nm [1] Speaking of _Out of Time_, did anyone else pick up the limited-edition of their recent best-of? Peter Buck wrote the liner notes, and tells people to submit their own burnt CD-Rs of OoT that remove two of the existing songs, add in the aforementioned 'Fretless' and 'It's a Free World Baby', and put them in another order. He says they'll consider them for a future re-release of OoT. I thought that was kinda cool, although I don't know what other song I'd remove from that album. Maybe 'Radio Song'. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V9 #329 **************************
