Pravatiner" Subject: Products, products--time for a deep sweep? and other stories Kudos to Chip for his behind the scenes account of Happy's Chicagoland appearances. It will have an honored place in the Ecto literary canon for a long time to come. It will come as no surprise to those long familiar with my idiosyncratic way of thinking about the Ecto world, that the events of the week just ended gave me ideas for a few more things for the mythical Ecto globalized heavy industry to manufacture. At Martyrs, watching the succession of photo-ops with Happy, it occurred to me that gazing at so many flashes going off in a row could put a person (read: Happy) at risk of developing eyestrain. And I promptly dreamed up what could arguably be the first Ecto product that actually stands a chance of making the jump onto reality. Only thing was, I could not, for the life of me, think of a name for it--an exigency which Chip found rather dismaying. But now, after further research, I have finally come up with a suitable brand. And so, behold the FLASH ME UP FuzzyRedbuster. The concept is disarming in its simplicity: A cardboard cutout of Happy, with which anyone, anywhere, at any time, could be photographed with Ecto's favorite singer-songwriter, while at the same time holding Happy completely harmless from the eye irritation, fuzzy redness and all, that can result from repeated, successive exposure to flash. And, of course, it would extend the opportunity for having their picture taken with her to Ectophiles everywhere between tours. While we're on the subject of redeye: I have no idea what brand of gin the Martyrs mixologist put in Happy's post-set martini, but I recall seeing behind a bar, on a previous occasion, what I think was called Sapphire gin. It came in a bright blue bottle--not fuzzy, but at least blue; so at least it's halfway toward fitting our colorful sobriquet for things ectophilic :-). Who knows, maybe we could anoint Sapphire gin as the official gin of Ecto. Best--and most utopian--of all, maybe the distiller could be persuaded to sign on as a sponsor for Happy's tours, as Miller Genuine Draft now does for certain artists. Or, closer to the ideal, if not to good taste (or at least, tasting good), one could tweak the recipe for that clsssic high-proof confection, the fuzzy navel. If you add blue curacao to the mix, either instead of or on top of the peach liqueur, you could call the resultant concoction the FUZZY BLUE NAVEL. No matter that it could arguably turn the quaffer green around the gills :-). And then there's the martini substitute that Chip jury-rigged for Happy on the night of the house concert, in the face of a lack of dry vermouth. Perhaps vodka, possibly mixed with sweet vermouth (Chip's account was silent on whether the vermouth they had on hand, if any, was included), garnished with a jalapen~o, could become a staple of ectophilic bars everywhere, having been duly christened the OUT LIKE A LAMB, in recognition of the likely result of overindulgence therein, though I can't imagine how it could be any worse than the consequences of overindulgence in fuzzy blue navels :-). At worst, the name has no less of a rational nexus to its referent than the name "sex on the beach" has to its associated drink :-). There was a certain delicious irony in Happy opening her Martyrs set with "No One Here," given that just about all the mainstays of the central states Ecto community were there (though the size of the crowd, relative to the size of the room, may have made it look emptier than it really was). Perhaps it would have been in the same spirit to have closed the show with "If I Ever See the Girl Again," the obvious subtext being that there would, indeed, be another tour at which we again would be catcing her act. Thanks again to Don for getting me back home an hour and a half earlier than the Wrong Century Limited (read: the Kensha-Chicago commuter train) would have. After I arrived home, the thought occurred to me that the best of all possible worlds would be if Happy were to do the first (or indeed, any later) in-store concert at the Borders that is under construction across the street from my building. It would provide an intimate room for the audience, a highly affordable ticket price :-), ample oportunity for new fans to discover Happy by serendipity, and--last but least--an easy commute for me, and almost as easy a commute for other local ectophiles. I used photo shop to enhance them enough to see the image, but the quality suffered a lot. :-( ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Nov 2003 19:42:33 -0600 From: "Xenu's Sister" Subject: Re: Happy question At 10:50 AM 11/15/2003 +0100, Yngve wrote: >Hi > >While searching the All Music Guide I did a search >on Happy just for the fun of it and among the albums >she appears on they list Black Flys Presents: Club Flys, Vol. 3. >Do they just mix in one of her songs or does she appear >under another name on that album? I haven't heard it (neither has Happy) but apparently Dave Aude sampled Happy. He didn't ask permission (though he may not have legally had to ask). That's all I know. I want to hear it but if he didn't even ask Happy (whether he was legally obligated to or not) or even tell her that he did, that seems rude. If someone sampled me, I'd sure want to know. He obviously credited her on the album though, or else she wouldn't be listed at the Artists Direct site (http://www.artistdirect.com/store/artist/album/0,,875624,00.html). Then again, someone sampled Happy! I have to say I think that's very cool. I wish more people would. As long as I know about it so I can hear it. :) Thanks Yngve! Recently they were chosen to compose music for a mega-stage production of The Lord of the Rings scheduled to premiere in London, spring 2005." Now that's a good combination, nordic music with lotr. Not that I mind Shore's score, it doesn't just signal proper viewer response like "cry now" or "bad thing happening now". If they had included more music (not singing hobbits), what do you think would have gone well? And does anyone know what Garmarna are doing? I didn't like Hildegard much (bits of songs were ok, but not any entire songs!), but I'm very fond of their other albums. The ones I haven't lost. Must tidy room. Varttina were in NYC this past Tuesday, and we had no idea!!!!! I've never heard of the place they played -- Satalla, on West 26th Street . Looking at the calendar, I'm amazed I haven't been there many times before ... they literally present music from all over the world every single night. So at least now I know of another calendar to keep an eye on ... :} But *damn*, I wish I'd known about that Varttina show!! :P :P :P =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Nov 2003 00:08:27 -0600 From: "Xenu's Sister" Subject: More about Dave Aude and "Roy" Well, there's a 12" remix of Roy, by Dave Aude!
