I did make a point of it to also get a large part of the Kate Song on video (given the limitation of 30 secs max of my camera, and then several seconds nothing while it was writing, not to mention the end of my batteries right then), _and_ I got Happy's permission to put the video tracks online. I'm also going to write down semi-extensive thoughts on the concert and everything somewhere down the road. Soon. Yesssh, sooooooooooon. :D Sander P.S. actually, as it's now several days later than when I wrote the above and I'm finally able to send out a batch of email - things might be up sooner than anticipated: I'm already done with editing all the pics and videos I took during my five weeks in the USA. The one thing it will all hinge on now is me finding high speed internet access somewhere here in New Zealand - depending on how many of the video files I want to put up, I have between 40MB and 180MB to upload (and that's after compressing to XviD), which you do not want to do using dial-up. :) [Also, I should have enough bandwidth, but depending on how popular badly-lighted 30 second video shots with bad sound quality will prove to be - anyone who might want to mirror if need be?] P.P.S. Any kiwi artists I should go and see while here? P.P.P.S. As for "Afterglow", I'll need to listen to it a few more times, but "Answer" at least already ranks as one of my favorite Sarah songs. (Then again, "Surfacing" is my favorite album by her, so what do I know...) ;) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Nov 2003 08:47:50 -0500 From: "burp@mindspring.com" Subject: another house concert From my neighborhood (yes, "Oregon Hill" from Cowboy Junkies) list in Richmond, VA: From: Reply To: OregonHill@yahoogroups.com To: Subject: [OregonHill] Oregon Hill House Concert- Porter Hall TN- Thursday 8PM Date: Mon, 10 Nov 2003 09:54:49 EST Hi neighbours! HAHA! Sometimes, the thing to do is just *ask*! :-) I think sometimes I tend to have too much of a "Katefan" mindset (that is, never ever ask Kate Bush or her people if you can do anything. They say "no" as a matter of course and policy. They tolerate things - like Gaffaweb - if not asked though.) Happy's not like that! I forget that sometimes. (Ok, she was like that with the Prism special, which I'm still shaking my head about, which I guess put me off *asking* about distributing for several years.) Brain says: "Make Happy happy, don't make Happy mad" Heart says: "It's for the fans" Both have won out at various times. In any case, something is in the works. Be patient. There are no guarantees she'll perform "And Dream Of Sheep" in Kenosha or Chicago, but we know audio exists of 3 of the 4 times she's performed it so far, and at least 2 videos exists of 1 of them (that is, there were 2 people videotaping in Toledo). Kenosha and Chicago will be more than covered. It's not like being there, but it'll have to do. Have fun in New Zealand Sander! I envy you so much. I've wanted to go there since I was a kid. Lord of the Rings just brought the desire back with burning intensity. Though I know I'll never get there, it's still a dream I have. For example, I was standing right next to Sander when he asked Happy if he could put the clips on the web, and I had an entirely different read on her feedback. My perception was: first she looked really concerned and not that happy. Then she grudgingly said I guess. Then, a little later she said, she'd prefer the images be sent to her for review so she could decide whether or not she wanted them available on the web. That's how I remember it at least. Perhaps Sander had additional discussions or I am mistaken. > Happy's not like that! I forget that sometimes. Before and after Prism, what list-related music/video sharing projects has Happy enthusiastically endorsed? I'm just curious cause I seem to have missed them and I'd probably be interested in getting a copy. > Have fun in New Zealand Sander! I envy you so much. I've > wanted to go there since I was a kid. She wants copies of anything (photos/audio/video) anyway, so I'm not surprised by that. Maybe Sander did misunderstand. I'd imagine she'd want the very best quality available anyway. There's another factor. Would people buy videos/DVDs to help her defray recording costs? Would people buy them if the same things or similar items were free? >Before and after Prism, what list-related music/video sharing projects has >Happy enthusiastically endorsed? I'm just curious cause I seem to have >missed them and I'd probably be interested in getting a copy. I don't know about "enthusiastically" but she endorsed Doug's Tape Tree project, which included, if I'm not mistaken, audio copies of her 1992 Albany and Philadelphia shows. The project ended way before her return to semi-regular performing in 1996. I don't know of any videotapes available in any capacity pre-1996. There hasn't been any formal projects from then till now to distribute anything else. I'm tired of it. I don't like having all this stuff and not getting it to anyone who wants it, and I really worry about what would happen to it all if I died or there were a fire. I started on a long-term project to address that, before we were so rudely forced to move. We were slowly starting to get some of the equipment to help facilitate distribution, such as a DVD burner, when hasn't even ever been hooked up! Something will happen. I don't know what, when or how, but something. Soon. (Would somebody give Bill Gates some Happy Rhodes? Plus, I like the artists (or at least their philosophies) who make official things available. Then they really can control quality and get it out to fans AND get paid. Folks like King Crimson, Pearl Jam and Richard Thompson all do that. > There's another factor. Would people buy videos/DVDs to help her defray > recording costs? I did something similar on the Veda list, with donations for an out of print veda cassette transfered to CD going to Veda. In the taper world, tapers mostly think they are entitled to copies of all shows for free and that they support the artists adequately by going to their shows. I'm sure on ecto people would be happy to buy live recordings. If it were appropriate, I'd happily send to Happy $10 for each live recording of hers I have. neal ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Nov 2003 20:20:45 -0000 From: "neal copperman" Subject: Re: Posting private e-mail by mistake I appreciate your sentiments Vickie, but you don't have to worry about it this time. I need to keep this short because I don't have a whole lot of time, but... I reunited with longtime ecto-friend Valerie N. this past Saturday night and went down to Orange County to attend a House Concert at Sherry's house. The artist performing was Nicole Gordon (http://www.nicolegordon.net/). She was good. She played guitar, along with two multi-talented multiple-instrument playing backing musician/vocalists. They did a wide variety of stuff, much of it from an upcoming album. She is a little bit hard to qualify in terms of genre. Some of the stuff was poppish, some closer to folkish. I would put her firmly in the singer/songwriter genre. There were shades of Paula Cole, put not as aggressive, shades of Aimee Mann, but not as lyrical, even a couple of celtic/bluegrassy tunes, though I would not put her generally in either of these categories. Her music is almost all downloadable from the website. She was in a band called LEAP a number of years ago, and their albums are for the most part also downloadable, at http://www.williamhartley.net/Leap/index.htm. Some of the LEAP stuff is actually quite good, and there is one song that I particularly like ALOT on an album called INTO IT. If you have any curiosity at all, but don't want to spend a lot of time listening to stuff you aren't sure you will like, I would recommend listening to the song "Wrestle the Devil" -- track 4 on Into It. This is the best one I have heard from her, though I do like much of the other stuff. Nicole is based in L.A. and plays alot around town. Concert listings on her website. If you watch the show "Everwood" (monday nights on WB), this past Monday, she was the singing voice behind the character Madison who is the babe(ysitter). As for Sherry's place, it was *great* for house concerts! Valerie and I heartily recommended that she host a Happy Show -- and we encouraged her to contact Happy and offer her place. To my knowledge, Happy is not scheduled to play anywhere in SoCal yet, and this would be a perfect place. So, please, please, can someone let us know here on the list if Happy is still accepting house gigs?? Sherry seemed very excited by this possibility. Check out Nicole if you get the chance.
