Too Big For me - Mathilde Santing - Great Dutch song stylist turns writer and comes up with a peach, so exquisite it hurts. This is seriously one of the most beautiful melodies to have caressed my ears in recent years, allied to a heartbreakingly poignant lyric, and sung with a nonchalant smile behind which pines a wounded soul. Subject: buffy in england/sooo OT really off topic, here, but i just want to whinge and let those in America and those brits lucky enough to have satellite know how lucky they are... they've started showing the final season of Buffy on terrestrial tv, here, with little fanfare and even less consideration regarding scheduling. In past seasons, they'd show an episode at 6:45pm, suitably cut for primetime, then show an "uncut" version at 1AM on Saturday. Im alone in the house in my love of the show, so I always tried to tape both, as the uncut versions were invariably shifted in the schedules by ten or twenty minutes, and many's the time I missed the last few minutes of a buffy. This season, however, they've decided to show three times a week at the 6:45 time, with no uncut version. As I've had no time to watch any of them, I'm taping them as I go along, but having no uncut version is a major drag. It's usually only cut by a few micro-seconds, usually only the odd bit of gore or nasty sound effect, but sometimes major illuminating glimpses (the S&M nature of Spike's relationship with Buffy last season, for instance) get cut out. I have no idea what the BBC are playing at, but I'm not happy. And as for me trying to sort out broadband....oh, don't get me started. adam k. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Nov 2003 08:08:33 -0500 From: "Rod Kratochwill" Subject: Re: Best Break-Up Songs? Thank you Adam. I love hearing some people in other countries otherwise much more central than Australia are screwed even worse than we are. It cheers me up, it really does :) The answer to your Buffy problems is, of course, to get them on DVD! Seasons 1-6 are now available, and I just ordered mine from www.devoted.com.au who right now run a time-limited deal: all Buffy DVDs at half price - A$34.95 a set. There are two sets to a season, so you can have a whole season for 70 Australian bucks, which really isn't bad! Naturally they are coded for Region 4, so you'll need multi-zone capability. They also have Farscape seasons 1 and 2, while season 3 is advertised as "soon"! They are more expensive though, at $124/season. - --------------------------------------------------------------------- "Fascism should rightly be called Corporatism as it is a merge of state and corporate power" - -- Benito Mussolini - -- 10:58:37 up 10 days, 13:22, 2 users, load average: 0.13, 0.04, 0.01-- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Nov 2003 11:50:47 +1100 From: Sherlyn Koo Subject: Re: buffy in england/sooo OT Hey folks, Andrew said: > They also have Farscape seasons 1 and 2, while season 3 is advertised as > "soon"! They are more expensive though, at $124/season. The Farscape R4 Season 3 box set has been out since October - I got mine from www.planetdvd.com.au. I think the Buffy R4 S1-6 box sets are on sale a lot of places right now (at least online). I noticed last month that it actually works out cheaper to buy an entire season in single discs rather than as a box set at full price (although they're only halfway through releasing S2 this way so far), so maybe it has something to do with that... How about "Ecto without glasses" for a caption? I'm offensive and I resemble that remark. (I wear trifocals now.) Actually I was using a camera I've never used before. The guy at the photo shop was trying to explain to me how hard it is to take really good photos with an "analog" camera under these conditions and that the digital cameras (or using b&w film with a traditional camera) work much better. Additionally I was trying to take quick photos inbetween the songs because I was doing an audio recording and the mic was attached directly to my jacket. I had the flash turned off on purpose. The camera's shutter clicking was very noisy so this was a problem. Over the past couple of years, I've generally borrowed one of our school's digital cameras for taking such pics, but I couldn't locate it before I left for Philly. I am hoping for much better photos of the Mechanicsburg concert. ~Mark C. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Nov 2003 22:20:14 -0600 (CST) From: "Mitchell A. Pravatiner" Subject: Fumbling towards longevity and other stories Last night on _The Midnight Special_ (WFMT), a guest opined that the reason for folk music's longevity is that it is driven by audience reaction, rather than what he called gatekeeper reaction--i.e., the opinions of major-label execs on what is commercially trendy for now. He went on to painfully elaborate the obvious, that the industry is seeing red at the democratization of music distribution, into channels (principally online) beyond its control. Seems to me that folk, and indie music like the stuff we are into, are in excellent company. If the parallels hold up, indie should also be in for a long life. Friday Morning, Sarah McLachlan did the concert performance on the Today Show. Just a few unplugged songs--one on acoustic guitar, the rest on piano. All well done. Made me want to buy the new CD when and if I can afford it. (Haven't bought a Sarah album since _Fumbling Towards Ecstasy_). More important, in the immediate now, to lay my earnings on Happy's local gigs (for which I am sacrificing a night's wages on Tuesday).
