Subject: Nick Harper/Sarah Slean For those London ectophiles interested, I've just noticed that Sarah Slean is opening up for Nick Harper at the Borderline, Monday Nov. 10th. Meanwhile, Juliet Turner's playing on, I think, the 24th --- if you haven't seen her, check her out. She's a kind of nervous performer, but with a beautiful voice, far better than her recent cd suggests, and is a really nice person. Carina Round is playing at the ICA on Dec 1st, and at The Lock (ex-Dingwalls) January 24th. adam k. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Nov 2003 13:21:39 +0100 (CET) From: Yngve Hauge Subject: Ala Sharon and The Catherines Hi, I'm listening to The Catherines - the three songs they did release alltogether that is. When they talk about The Catherines in connection with Ala Sharon in Boudoir and Smitten - is it the same band and are those three songs recorded by The Catherines released in some other form and are they possible to get hold on? - -- Yngve n.p. Thanks to Meredith and John for the messages. Yes, I went, and it was a blast. A new "venue" has opened up in town, and it's the *perfect* place to see artists the like of Edie. Small, intimate and comfortable. There were around 50 or so people there and they were all enjoying it. No loud crowds to attend with and nobody using it as a pick-up excuse. In all actuality the venue is an art gallery they "transform" into a live-music (and other) "hall". Great acoustics and it was just two women and their guitars. The opener - Sarah Bank - is a local *19 year old* with awesome writing skills and a killer voice. Even Edie commented at length about her chops. Quite awesome. Sarah was on at least 45 minutes. After a short break Edie took to the "stage". Edie has awesome audience "chops". She connects well with the audience and is quite funny. She's not afraid to tell of her feelings for something, be it good or bad. The music was awesome. With the awesome acoustics you could discern words - which sometimes doesn't happen in the larger halls. She's quite the guitarist and her writing is out of this world. Her set was about two hours, so it was an evening well spent - and not too expensive. I ended buying her latest _When I Was Made_ along with Sarah Bank's CD. As you can tell I had an enjoyable experience and will definitely see her again next time she comes to town. And I will also be watching for the next time Sarah Bank plays as well. Azure Ray (I know they are from nebraska...) - quietly stuning...the new album is a must own...even better and more hypnotic live than on cd 2. Nitin Sawhney - not sure what to expect as I had two of his albums and enjoyed them but was totally blown away by the live performance - had a great mix of vocalists as well (female r&b/soul singer, female indian traditional, female arabic, male urban/beat box, and another male who could do amazing things vocally 3. Oh Susanna - after catching her for a 30 min set last week in toronto, popped into her edinburgh scotland gig (not that I am following her around or anything...just turns out our schedules matched)...she was quite excellent hearing her will full band backing...alabaster was stunning :) 4. Carina Round - WOW - let me reiterate WOW. I was expecting piano, but got guitar - crunchy, loud, intense, fantastic...I need to go listen to the new album again after seeing her live - only downer from the show was the shortness and that she didnt have time to play more songs from the first album 5. Lamb - last night - Cancelled *pout* 5.1 Alternative to Lamb - Karnataka - I had a copy of Storm and remembered liking it well enough so I decided to catch them once Lamb fell through...sort of the welsh version of october project? what could happen if you crossed the corrs with land of the blind? I did enjoy the show but my socks were still on afterwards (and if anyone is interested they were recording the show for a live cd which will be forthcoming...) all in all not a bad trip musically (plus I saw stomp which was enjoyable as well if not necessarily ecto) jason n.p. Lamb - Between Darkness and Wonder (yes I did buy the new album at duty free today on the way home even though they cancelled the show last night...and yes, it is tasty :) ) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Nov 2003 22:42:54 EST From: RavFlight@aol.com Subject: Best Break-Up Songs? Really great performer, very funny, and her new CD is definitely her best yet. I highly recommend seeing her or getting her CD, or both. http://www.ediecarey.com By the way, Myshkin was in Missoula opening for Patty Larkin this week, and she really blew the audience away. I think some people enjoyed her more than Patty, and one person said they felt bad for Patty having to follow her. They are very different acts, Myshkin is not all that folky. She's a bit more in the direction of Rose Polenzani or Sarina Simoom or Jane Siberry... I know those people are all quite different, but I think there is something of each of those styles, and definitely a lot of other stuff. She calls her stuff Gypsy Torch Rock (though this was a solo show, so it wasnt so much rock). If you live in or near Portland, you should really check her out. I know I've mentioned her before, but seeing her this time, I really got it on a new level... http://www.myshkinsrubywarblers.com/ - -Jess ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 08 Nov 2003 21:51:35 -0800 From: Nadyne Mielke Subject: Re: Best Break-Up Songs? My favourite post-break-up song is 'I Can't Believe We Were Married' by Paul Kelly (the Australian singer-songwriter, not the blues guy). /nm ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Nov 2003 22:23:35 -0800 (PST) From: alberto carrasco Subject: Re: HR/Tin Angel 11-1-03 Photos I disagree. Profusely. We know what Happy looks like and personally I think the capturing of motion, however unintentional, provides some subtly, incredibly beautiful images. At the very least, if your tastes are determined by the journalistic-style portrait focus of newspaper photography, you may miss the beauty of the moment that these photographs capture. At the very worst, you could clearly use a crash course in manners based on your staggeringly rude response to an Ecto contribution that was clearly posted with affection for a subject we all, supposedly, hold dear. - --- Paul Blair wrote: > At 14:30 -0500 11/7/03, Mark Chapman wrote: > >OK so no one ever accused me of __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
