In fact, at first, I couldn't place the song as being Sinead's, even though it was naggingly familiar. A search on allmusic.com revealed the details. The group is Nickel Creek, who've gotten much praise from all corners, and it's off of their 2000 release Sugar Hill. In the pictures you have posted of your house concerts there is a wonderful piece of furniture in the background. It's that CD case, maybe 5-6 feet tall and appears to be made of oak. Is that custom made or a store bought piece? If it's commercially available, where did y'all buy it from? It looks like it would suit my needs perfectly. My collection has grown to over 900 cd's since I've joined the list and I have a hard time finding a particular cd in all the stacks of plastic that have overflowed the small bookshelf I'm currently using. If Woj built it, would detailed drawings and parts list be available for purchase after the show? (I know, I've watched too many episodes of the New Yankee Workshop!) Is that custom made or a store bought piece? i can answer that question! it's store-bought. we got them from cd world, a local chain in new jersey. i don't know where they got those shelves from but i still have one of the boxes down in the basement and can check to see if there are any company details on the label when i get home. not sure if cd world is still around or not, but i don't recall seeing any of those shelves last time i was in one of their stores which would have been, um, 3-4 years ago. they are really quite nice. each one holds about 400 discs in jewel cases. we have four in the living room and they're full to the brim. i wish we had more since they store discs rather compactly and with a small footprint. hmmmm. mabe a roadtrip is in order.... >If Woj built it, would detailed drawings and parts list be available >for purchase after the show? The best ones, money-wise, that I've found were from a store outside of DC (but a chain store) called Bed, Bath & Beyond. They're prefab, came in black but probably other colors, too. They hold something like 550-575 (packaging has the gall to overestimate that number ~ which I figured you could do if you shoved as many jewel cases as possible between each row of CDs and each CD shelf). The price was just over $50 each ~ much better than many similar units. If there's a Bed Bath & Beyond near you, great. If not, you might want to google around for a BBR website. ~Mark C. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Nov 2003 09:39:12 -0800 From: Nadyne Mielke Subject: Re: CD case At 06:45 AM 11/6/2003, Ed Cole wrote: >A slightly personal question but the answer may be of interest to other >Ecto folks so I'm posing the query to the list. This all comes from Ikea , if you're in the States. My favourite is their standard Billy bookcase with CD shelf inserts. The short bookcase is $59, the tall bookcase is $79, the shelf inserts are $20 each. Each shelf+insert holds 128 CDs; the short bookcase holds 3 inserts, the tall 6. They also have a the Benno CD tower, which is the same height as the tall bookcase, and holds 180 CDs. It's $49. I like the bookcases with inserts because it's very flexible. I currently use the tall bookcase. The top shelf doesn't have an insert, I use it for other music-related stuff (such as vinyl). The rest have inserts. I also have a matching Benno tower, although I think I'm going to replace it with another bookcase. Living in earthquake country (not to mention having a slightly psychotic cat who climbs everything), the tower just seems like it's too easy to topple. :) Anyway, if you're looking on the website for pictures, here's some links: Benno CD tower: http://tinyurl.com/txag Billy bookcases: http://tinyurl.com/txat Billy CD shelf insert: http://tinyurl.com/txas HTH. :) /nm ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Nov 2003 12:19:07 -0800 From: cyo@landoftheblind.com Subject: Re:Wendy and me, Sat. CD Street, an online distributor of Indie music is no longer paying, let alone responding to the artists they sell. Apparently, they're out of money and may have lost their financial backing. While ordering from them might help to get them back on their feet, they're still not answering emails, phone calls or faxes from the artists they owe. Perhaps if they were up front about their plight and not trying to hide or dismiss it, the Indie community could rally with ways to help, but sadly they are not even trying to explain their situation to the very people who give them an opportunity to have a business in the first place. So if you shop with them, know that the very artist, you're trying to support will probably never see a dime of the money and that CD Street will make absolutely no effort to let the artist know why. Feel free to let them know their policy and conduct is a disgrace while they try to still make themselves attractive to Indie artists as a place to sell their music. I also got to meet Happy (it's a small place, with aprox. 40 people there), as well as our own Mark. The Second Floor Gallery is just that, a art gallery on the second floor of an old church. The owner told me he is taking over the first floor as well, and will then offer more music upstairs, as well as art studios and a coffee house downstairs. Quite an eclectic collection, mostly from local artists. I nearly bought a pin for my wife's birthday, but realized I couldn't afford it... Alan Pollard opened the evening with an 11 song set, the last few including an upright bass player (whose name I missed) and Bon Lozaga. Apparently, Alan is local to the Harrisburg area, and is a professional builder. He had invited many of his clients, and spoke to them frequently. This was a bit disconcerting to those of us who had never seen or heard him before. He did put free copies of a 3-song preview CD on each chair, advertising his CD due in January. Funniest moment (for me) was when he was explaining how nice this seemed to him, as the night before he had been standing in front of 120 people who were there to see Happy and not him, and that they had seen him only as an annoyance. Someone behind me said, in a loud stage whisper, "And this is different how?" which was unkind but nearly made me laugh out loud. Happy came on a little after 9:00 with her band (Bon Lozaga, Hanny Rowe, Bob Muller) and did a total of 12 songs. I'll offer a set list, but I'm one of those guys who listens to the CD's without the case or booklet, so I don't actually know the names of all the songs; I'll do my best: Look For The Child Fall [on the new CD] Ra is a Busy God To Live in Your World ?I Can't Let It Go Ali - Hanny Rowe song on 'No Other' Save Our Souls Never Been Me The Chose One [new CD] When the Water's Gone - Hanny Rowe song Synergy When the Rain Came Down Happy was everything I expected, in fine voice, and seemed to be enjoying herself. Nevertheless, by the end of the set Happy was clearly tired and they ended there, before they wanted to, I think. When I introduced myself, she actually apologized, which was certainly unnecessary. It was wonderful to finally hear Happy live, after many years as a fan. [It's also a little strange to be posting here, after having been lurking for, literally, years. Well, actually, it's only about an hour west of new York City, but it couldn't have felt any more rural. This was a big, old building with hardwood floors and tin ceiling & walls, built in 1790 and oozing with character. About two dozen people were in attendance, but despite the large floor space the atmosphere felt warm, friendly and intimate, not empty. One of the highlights of the night was Boy At The Piano, a song with a jazzy, smokey lounge-type feel, perfectly suited to the venue. Vienna quipped that she chose it because it was the closest she had to a blues song. There were also two new songs from the forthcoming new album (I think). Mission Street, which is apparently performed on guitar on the album, but which she played on piano at this show. And Homecoming, an entertaining song written from the point of view of a Caucasian male long-haul truck driver. For the encore, she sang a song in Mandarin Chinese called The Green Island Serenade, which she said she grew up listening to on one of her parent's record albums. 19-year old Tyler Hilton opened with a set on acoustic guitar. He performed a good set but I don't really understand how he recently got signed to Maverick, as I didn't really hear much to set him apart from the pack other singer-songwriters doing the same sort of thing these days. Then Vienna took the stage for about an hour with the following: The Tower Gravity Mission Street Homecoming Enough to Go By Boy at the Piano Drought Say Uncle Unwritten Letter #1 Lullaby for a Stormy Night Green Island Serenade (Encore sung in Mandarin) I would have loved to hear Feather Moon, but alas, I didn't dig into Meredith's review until I got home after the show or I would have requested it. Oh well - something to look forward to next time. Dan ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V9 #314 **************************
