After a listen and a half, in admittedly non-optimal circumstances... I like it. Nothing immediately grabbed my ear, but nothing pushed me away. There were a few sounds that seemed could be interesting, and hints of layers below the surface. In a sense, it reminded me of the recent Annie Lennox CD, which struck me the same way at first but which I grew to love. And I, as usual, on a casual listen, have no idea what any of the lyrics are. OTOH, I find that the more music I make, the less I demand of others' music. That someone puts out a disc that seems pretty much a continuation of what she's been doing well strikes me as OK, nowadays. Last night, Thea played the Scala, an ex-cinema in King's Cross. I should digress here, 'cos the Scala has an interesting history: It was once one of London's most beloved independent cinemas, reknowned for its revivals and all- night festivals. Unfortunately, a few years ago, they made the mistake of showing Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange" which Kubrick himself had banned from ever being shown in Britain. He sued, and one of London's most beloved independent cinemas went under. Ironic, that. It is now, however, a great little venue -- comfortable and with good sight lines (it helped that I convinced my partner to skip the Archers -- Brit reference, there -- and queue up with me early enough to stake out a good place). Opening act was Brit Adam Masterson, whose mannered American growl began to irritate me after two songs. Imagine all the quiet Springsteen bits -- heavy on the "Ghost of Tom Joad" -- put through a blender and pureed into a fine, formless paste. Then dribble it into your ears for half an hour. Quite boring, actually. When Thea came on, I thought she looked tired, and after the first number she admitted she had flu, and asked us to excuse her if she coughed, spluttered and/or passed out. The first few numbers suffered from a slightly dodgy sound balance, which threatened to drown out her vocals and blur the dynamics altogether, but after a brief acoustic portion (including the most wondrously haunting cover of "Bad Moon Rising") everything seemed to click and the evening took flight. Thea rose above her illness with grace and humour, performing for an hour and a half with commitment and an obvious sense of enjoyment, and managed to fill the space (about ten twenty times the size of, oh, say the 12 Bar Club) with one hell of a vibe. She played, naturally, a lot from her new one, "Avalanche", and it was good to hear them stripped of the production of the disc -- "Mainstream" sounded particularly reenergised, and she dedicated "Pirate Moon" to Elliot Smith. She dipped into her back catalogue, as well, playing "Generation Y" from "Lipstic Conspiracies" and healthy doses of "Rules for Jokers" (including a stunning "Keep Up" which she started of acapella) and "Songs from the Gutter". It was a fantastic evening, and when she came on for her first encore ("What a wanky ritual that is, eh?" she asked, echoing the thoughts of so many of us) she gave us a heartbreaking, simple version of Phil Ochs' "When I'm gone" and followed it with the lovely, haunting "Inverigo". I can honestly say this is the first gig that I've come close to weeping at. In a good way. She came back for another encore, and by her last song, the much-requested and stunning "Heartstring Blues", her voice was beginning to show the strain, but she gave it her all. When she went off and the lights came up, I was grinning like a maniac, and practically floated out of the place. It had to be one of the best concerts I've been to in a long time, if not ever, satisfying on almost all accounts (okay, I'd of loved to hear "God Knows"), and I know for sure that there's no doubt: Thea Gilmore deserves to be massive. adam k. - ----------------------------------------------- This mail sent through http://webmail.zoom.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Nov 2003 07:52:40 EST From: Riphug@aol.com Subject: Sarah McLachlan on Oxygen A former fumbler friend of mine attended the taping for a Sarah McLachlan appearance on Oxygen this coming Sunday. Here's what he said in an e-mail to some of us: <, but anyway, here's Avril's setlist for her half hour performance (8:10 - 8:40 pm approx): 1) Sk8er Boi 2) Complicated 3) I'm With You 4) Knocking on Heaven's Door (Bob Dylan cover) Avril handled vocals of course while her guitar player took care of the acoustic guitar accompaniment, both perched on high stools with avril sitting yoga-style at times...she seemed to have a red/pink theme going with the matching colours of her shoes and mascara/eye shadow, and was wearing a metallica t-shirt. to be honest, i've never been all that enamoured of Avril's pitch accuracy esp when live, though she has quite a number of catchy tunes and honest lyrics to her credit...luckily this time Avril was relatively more "on-pitch" singing into her sennheiser mic, and got better as her vocal chords warmed up, in fact her acoustic performance of "I'm with you" actually elicited a very favourable, er, musical reaction from me (er, goes without saying that Avril's quite a cutie, even if that has nothing to do with her music at all...okie, i'm wandering off-topic, slap me hard, pretty please! *hee*) 4 songs later and it was all over, and after a break, Avril re-appeared briefly to introduce "my friend, Sarah McLachlan..." and here's Sarah's setlist...she played on piano except for BAM and Ice Cream on acoustic guitar... oh, Ash and Sean, who had been wandering around the venue completely unrecognised by most fans) showed up for Push & Ice Cream, providing support on percussion (tabla covered with a towel) and acoustic guitar: 1) BAM 2) Fallen 3) Dirty Little Secret 4) Push 5) Ice Cream 6) Angel a rather short set indeed (40 minutes) considering there were no Q&A session (unless that will be taped at another time, maybe by trained actors? ;~), but i'm not complaining. the audience naturally was very receptive and showed their approval very enthusiastically and vocally, though as usual it got a mite overdone as the whistling & cheering was just drowning out all the emotional tonal inflections & pitch variations that Sarah tends to end her songs with - hopefully the broadcast will capture those special moments... it's been quite a while (though not as long as Oxygen's claim of "Sarah's 6 years absence", or their inaccurate hype of "you lucky people will be the first ones ever to hear these new songs live"!), but i was immediately enraptured by that soothing yet powerfully evocative & haunting voice that has become so familiar and comforting to many of us here - and oh what a dynamic and pitch range, so aptly captured by her signature Neumann stage vocal mic! this isn't meant to be any sort of a review on "Afterglow", btw, but the acoustic version of Fallen just drew me into that special realm (after the obligatory BAM was gotten out of the way *winks*), and then Sarah's emotional rendition of "Dirty Little Secret" really had me reeled in (Sarah did mentioned that she had to fight very hard for that particular track to be included in her new album, as it was apparently felt in other quarters that this song was more appropriate for a movie or soundtrack...) oh, and on "Push", Sarah looked at Ash and mentioned several times that this love song was for her husband (it was smashing to hear her referring to Ash as such, unlike at most of the Lilith Fairs and Surfacing gigs where he was introduced more as the drummer or band-member) the icing to the cake would have been if India had wandered out on stage like Rexie used to do, but no that didn't happen tonight, though Sarah was playing with India quite a bit during the Toronto SARS benefit...how sweet! anyway, you'll all get to see this and more when this "custom" concert airs on oxygen this sunday evening, including Ash wearing the rock star trousers this time round (i won't mention what Sarah was wearing as there have been too many spoilers here already ;) before i forget, after Angel, the producer/crew person announced that oxygen had messed up and they had to do another take (just like at Storytellers)...as the stage techs were setting up (mostly checking the mics on Ash's kit), Sarah started tinkering around on piano coming up with classics like "the Entertainer", and after some pleading from the crowd, launched into "Possession" accompanied by Ash on tabla - this wasn't taped however. so Push & Ice Cream was re-taped, and Sarah even played a slightly wrong series of notes halfway through "Push" which she joked about - not that anyone was complaining at all about being treated to an extended performance! Avril was also asked to come back to re-do "Complicated". all in all a fab evening of brilliant music... :) *fumblecheers* ~edward P.S. i was sitting next to a young & very avid Avril fan (it was actually her first concert), but i think she was more into Sarah than Avril by the end of the taping... no disrespect to Avril, but Sarah does have that certain musical and "je ne sais quoi" charisma! :) >> ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Nov 2003 09:31:39 -0500 (EST) From: dmw Subject: Re: some surprising new releases On Fri, 10 Oct 2003, neal copperman wrote: > > However, I did find a few things that caught me off guard. It's intricately arranged, played by a cast of (literally) dozens. It's clear from two spins that it's not about big pop hooks or about gritty hard-loving songs; it's less clear (to me) to what degree it will eventually become memorable, but it's definitely not dull. I mean, let's compare. Sarah is not a punk artist who can do in forty minutes what, say, Sleater-Kinney can. Peter Gabriel may be able churn out eight minutes of material per year and get away with it -- but Peter is a genius, while Sarah hasn't done anything truly brilliant since "Fear." Meanwhile, Tori has proven that she can deliver twice as much music in half as much time, and it will be superior to most if not all of _Afterglow_. All of this is MHO, obviously. I intend no disrespect to Sarah fans, especially because I'd still like to be one of them. She's just making it increasingly hard, is all, and I felt the need to vent. And on the other hand, "Stupid" is a pretty good song. I've haven't heard much about Stereolab since the tragic death of Mary Hansen: is this the end of the band as we know it? In the UK I've been amazed at why Stereolab weren't massive: imaginative, tuneful, thoughtful, brilliantly crafted, feelgood music. I'd also take issue with the ectoguide write up on the band which is biased in favour of their droney velvet underground punky stuff as opposed to the more tuneful and harmonic later works which are much more my preference. This isn't going to be a full report either, since I'm trying to get to bed before 1 am for the first time in a week, but here goes. The Bottom Line condensed the evening into just one show, which considering the turnout was the right thing to do (plus this meant we didn't miss anything, since there's no way we could've made it through the late show). There were maybe three dozen people there, including a passel of ectophiles: myself, woj, Paul Blair, John Henshon, Dan Stark and Leif, Kiri Hargie, Chris Montville, JeffW, and I'm sure I'm forgetting a few in my stupor. There were also a few ectophiles-in-spirit in attendance, including my best friend from college who somehow after knowing me all these years still had never actually seen Happy play in person. Anne Heaton and Frank Marotta, Jr, started things off with a wonderful set of mostly new material. They're recording Anne's new CD up in Somerville right now, and it's going to be one hell of a record. I know I've said this before, but it's true so I'll say it again -- her songwriting has taken a huge leap forward on these new songs (not to say that she wasn't good already), which becomes more and more apparent every time I hear them. They were a really great warmup for the main event. (There were some people there specifically to see Anne, but not very many of them left after she was done, which was good.) Happy had the same band as Philly -- Bon Lozaga, Bob Muller, and Hansford Rowe. Her set list was pretty much the same as Philly, though she didn't do the KaTe song, which *really* bummed me out. :( So if anyone taped Philly, please please please I will do whatever it takes just to get a copy of that one song. I won't share it with anyone else ... I just really really need to hear this!!! As always, while Happy was singing I just sat in slack-jawed awe at her vocal ability. As Anne Heaton said last night, "it's a gift" -- no kidding. No matter how many times I see her play, I will never fail to be blown away by how effortless she makes it look, even as she's sliding from the very bottom to the very top of her range in the span of a couple notes. The band is great too, but we knew that. :) I could have done without the two songs Hansford Rowe did on his own, though. That time would have been much better spent doing a couple more Happy songs (or a certain KaTe song ), imnsho. But hey, at least Happy sang beautiful backing vocals on both of them. Yes, Vickie, I took pictures. :) I haven't had a chance to do anything with them yet, though -- tomorrow evening, I promise. Tonight kind of got derailed (see next post). I did shuffle through them on the way home last night, and I think I managed to get a couple good ones. (The no-flash thing does make things rather interesting, plus I had forgotten to charge my camera battery so I wasn't sure how many pictures I was going to get.) =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Nov 2003 00:21:04 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Vienna Teng at Yale Hi, Vienna Teng was supposed to play at a rock club up in Hartford, CT tonight, but that gig got cancelled in favor of a private show at one of the undergraduate colleges at Yale, sponsored by an Asian-American student group on campus. (This turned out to be a good thing, I'm sure -- I don't think the gig at the rock club would've gone every well.) Thanks to a very on-the-ball person at Vienna's booking agency, some of us townies were able to get the secret password to enter the inner sanctum for this performance. The Branford College Common Room happens to have a gorgeous 9-foot concert grand piano in it, and it's even in tune. Vienna said it was the best piano she's played this whole tour. In front of a dozen or so undergrads plus me, woj, Mike Curry and his friend the ecto-lurker Jenn, she did a wonderful 45-minute set. Let's see if I can remember the set list: Eric's Song Feather Moon Gravity My Medea Say Uncle Signal Fire Decade +1 Unwritten Letter #1 Lullabye For A Stormy Night I might have forgotten one, but I think that's it. "Feather Moon" is an absolutely gorgeous, ethereal piece that reminded me of the best of Sarah Slean. Apparently the upcoming CD version features strings and horns, which is a positively drool-worthy proposition. :) It was also great to hear "Signal Fire" again (she'd asked me if I had any requests, and I had a brain fart and couldn't remember the title of it, but as soon as I said "you know, the song that Don Keller likes" she knew instantly ;>). The piano really was a prize specimen, and she was clearly having a great time playing it. The PA they had there for her vocal mic wasn't the greatest, but it all worked out ok. I was pleasantly surprised to note that a few of the students there were fans already, and I saw a few others leave with freshly-bought CDs. Hopefully next time she plays in New Haven it'll be at a place that's open to the public (yeah, I'm working on that :). Afterwards we townies and Vienna had a good time hanging out at a nearby cafe, talking music and all sorts of other things, as usually happens when ectophiles get together. If it weren't a work night, we'd probably all still be there!
