I left the list when I was going to start going to graduate school for my Masters in Social Work. I didn't need to get tempted to buy new music. All my full time shitty salary was going to pay my tution. I'm one of the few who did not take out a mortage on my education. I'm broke now but at least I have no loans to pay back... I missed the banter, new music ideas, and shows. Since I no longer feel safe in downloading music I will have to resort to other ways in getting my music...Anyway I'm happy to say I graduated in January '03 and received my CSW (NYS) in October. Now I'm going crazy trying to find a new job. I've been at my job for 8 years and I really really really need a change and more money...My only other success was losing over 60 pounds. Probably the people who met me on here wouldn't even know I had put on weight. I'm a binge eater and graduate school exceberated it. Anyway I really really recommend weight watchers. Especially since I'm a life time member now...Anyway I use to go by names like Ariana and one more name I can't remember. My real name has always been Melissa. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 04 Nov 2003 08:48:00 -0500 From: Mark Chapman Subject: Current Happy Gigs > > Nov. 6 Mechanicsburg, PA Second Floor Gallery 105 South Market St. > > (717) 697-0502 > What? Where did you get that listing? On Happy's web page and Ken's post > it says: > > Nov. 6 Harrisburg, PA Second Floor Gallery > Where did you get Mechanicsburg? The address and "Mechanicsburg" comes directly from the Lolo Records press release. Since none of the musicians reacted weirdly to me saying "See you in Mechanicsburg," I'm pretty sure M-burg is the place. I also did a Yahoo Maps search for directions and the S. Market Street location in M-burg came right up. But if you can find a Second Floor Gallery in Harrisburg, then there is *really* some confusion going on. ~Mark ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Nov 2003 05:48:20 -0800 (PST) From: anna maria "stjärnell" Subject: new stuff Hi.. some new stuff i just heard.. I took some photos (non-digital) that may or may not turn out (I was borrowing a camera I've never used before) and our list brother from The Netherlands was taking close-up digital shots he said he would be posting. I taped with Happy's implied approval (I have in the past), but I am not distributing the recording to a bunch of people without her permission. I've only been on this list for a couple of years and I know you have a long relationship with HR, Vickie, but I've seen very little widespread "trading" of shows mentioned on this list, and it is my vague understanding that HR is not overly excited about that. I was informed by someone that there was a European tv broadcast of HR many moons ago that she explicitly asked people *not* to copy and distribute. So with that in mind, I will ask HR directly when I can regarding her specific wishes. ~Mark C. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Nov 2003 15:19:31 +0000 From: adamk@zoom.co.uk Subject: Carina Round at the Garage, London (and comin' at ya!) Quite an intense performance from Carina last night at the Garage, a venue I was previously unfamiliar with. The evening somewhat marred by the fact that this had been billed, originally, as a Headline gig, which was then changed to co-headline with another band called Augie March. Im not sure what thats supposed to mean, but matters were muddied further when the schedule was posted outside the venue before the doors opened, and it clearly stated that there was entirely new band opening things up, and that both they and Carina had only half hour slots, while Augie March had a full hour. Looks suspiciously like she was only opening (and, had I known, Id have gone for the Spitz gig last month, where she DEFINITELY headlined) but even in the face of a half-hour set, a song dropped from the set list due to time constraints AND no encore, the lady at the cd table still insisted No, its a CO-headline. Okay, whinge over: Carina still packs more in a half hour than most bands do in an hour, and this was a shining example of compressed and cathartic energy. Not quite as good as the Borderline gig I saw earlier this year, but its great to see someone so obviously, physically and spiritually into it, so tuned in and committed to the music, but still having fun. The set comprised mostly of her second album The Disconnection, which lacks the jazzy textures of First Blood Mystery and sounds a lot more like PJ Harvey (oh, come on, Polly, give us another cracker). It was a tight, all too brief set. And shed even brought her mother along (ahhhhhh). I understand theyre about to release the album in the States, and even tour (someone clear their living room for her, but hide the pets!) I committed the unpardonable and didnt stay for Augie March, but they didnt come on until 10:15, and I was already knackered from lack of sleep. Great to meet you there, Jason, and thanks for the cd (its brilliant!) adam k. - ----------------------------------------------- This mail sent through http://webmail.zoom.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 04 Nov 2003 11:07:37 -0500 From: Mark Chapman Subject: Current Happy Gigs (Mechanicsburg) It's definitely M'burg, and not Harrisburg. The show is scheduled for an 8:00 p.m. start. Tix are $10 in advance, if reserved, or $12 at the door. The gallery is in an old church (there's pics on the webpage I sent earlier). The person I spoke with was not overly enthusiastic about eateries in the near vicinity, but he said there were a couple of places nearby and on Main Street. ~Mark ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Nov 2003 11:18:37 -0800 From: "London, Sherry" Subject: RE: ecto-digest V9 #311-Sarah McLaughlin >>After downloading the Sarah McLachlan video so kindly provided by someone here on the list, I was impressed by Fallen and decided to check out the rest of Afterglow on Nettwerk's website. I hate to say it, but I was underwhelmed. I know someone here has stated that it was better than Surfacing, but I have to disagree. Surfacing had a few good moments, but the only highlight on Afterglow is Fallen. Too many of the songs sound like bland adult contemporary music, nothing like the magical soundscapes of Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, or even Solace. (Which I've misplaced - again. Thank for iTunes.) Anyone else agree or disagree?<< Eric....I have to agree with you on this...underwhelmed seems like a fitting word. I have only listened to the whole CD a couple of times now and some times CDs grow on you with time but I felt it was mostly variations of songs/tunes/lyrics I have heard from her before. People who live in the vicinity would know. > I was informed by someone that there was a European tv broadcast of HR many moons ago > that she explicitly asked people *not* to copy and distribute. That was the show at the Middle East Club, in Philadelphia. It was broadcast on a cable channel there. For some reason Happy wasn't pleased with it and didn't want it distributed. To this day I don't know why. I'm still mystified. That's the only one I've ever heard a hint of a frown about. Whether these shows, any shows, get distributed among fans during her lifetime, while a very cool thing, isn't nearly as important as that they exist and be preserved. Posterity. For the benefit of future fans. > So with that in mind, I will ask HR directly when I can regarding her specific wishes. I understand.
