Subject: Elliot Smith I have yet to hear any of his music, but I know that a lot of you out there are fans, so I thought I'd just pass this on, from Drowned in Sound: Today is a sad day in the history of music. This won't go down today like Lennon, Curtis and Cobain. But in the history books, like Nick Drake, Jeff Buckley and most recently, Matthew Jay; we are very sad to report that Elliott Smith has passed away. He'll be best remembered for soundtracking 'Good Will Hunting'. He recorded five albums of inspired music and spoke to his fans like an acheing angel, sharing his pain and joy in equal measure. If you have 'Roman Candle' sat on your cd shelf, now is the time to play it. If you've never heard any of his records and you're wondering why this is so upsetting, treat yourself to 'Either/Or' this week. Details are all very sketchy at the moment as to how and why (we can only assume all the extremes of pain and beauty in his life, from this world, may have become too much) but we'll be sure to keep you up-to-date as information comes in. If anyone reading this now knows anything, please get in-touch. We've posted the story up @ http://www.drownedinsound.com/articles/8269 , feel free to leave your own messages beneath the story saying how you feel about this (all negative posts will be deleted) and discuss with other fans how Elliotts music touched your life. I haven't seen the track listing > yet. Does anyone know if it's strictly album stuff or if it has other > musical goodies? according to the information on AMAZON.com (where you can pre-order the CD set) the CD has twenty songs on it, four of which are new (two re-recorded rarities and two "new" songs). the new songs are SNOW CHERRIES FROM FRANCE (which is actually an older song, i think it was written for her CHOIRGIRL HOTEL album, but never made it onto either that album, the subsequent album, or any single as a bside. it's been referred to in interviews though, which is why people know about it.) and a song called ANGELS. the two re-recorded "rarities" are SWEET DREAMS and MARY (which is to be the first single off the best of). on top of this, according ot he press released, TORI has gone ahead and revisited and "retooled" (whatever that means) the original material. probably she has just gone back and cleaned up some of the production of her earlier stuff, remastered them to sound better to her (and others) discerning ear. i have a feeling us laymen will probably not notice the difference. the press release was pretty specific about her only re-recording those two bsides. the bonus DVD has three live songs recorded during soundcheck from her final concert from her summer 2003 tour. the songs are PRETTY GOOD YEAR, NORTHERN LAD, and HONEY. it will also include a 5.1 surround sound audio remix of PUTTING THE DAMAGE ON and MR. ZEBRA - and each song will have a tori gallery of images to accompany the song. the US version seems to come with the DVD, but the UK have an option of buying the CD with or without the DVD. the US set seems pretty cheap for what you get. $15 on amazon. of course those of us who have the most of the tori stuff, probably aren't getting much out of it, but i might end up splurging and getting it, just for the two extra songs and the DVD. but then again, maybe not, i think i've pretty much outgrown my tori phase of my life....i'll probably just wait and get it used... hope this helps and wasn't TOO much info. irvin ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Oct 2003 11:34:35 -0700 From: Ethan Straffin Subject: Re: TORI's new "best of" info. The horror! ;) actually it's really funny. i get this reaction a lot from TORIPHILES. i can understand, as i used to be a hardcore tori fan. but with each release, i find myself losing more and more interest in her work. i didn't even bother to pick up her covers album STRANGE LITTLE GIRLS, and i finally broke down and bought SCARLET WALK just for the packaging elements - which in retrospect, weren't all that stunning. the fake POLAROID photos have been done, and done better by a chinese artist named FAYE WONG (who covered one of TORI's songs years ago). that said, i recently aquired the album ROUNDS by FOUR TET. its organic instrumental electronica (definitely recommended if you are interested in that sort of thing) and there is a song called UNSPOKEN that samples TORI's WINTER piano riff. the minute i heard that piano, i was totally transported back to LITTLE EARTHQUAKES. i still do love that album muchly. UNSPOKEN is a great song by the way. it's the first song that i've heard that samples TORI is a respected way and builds a completely new song. the only other remix or sample of a TORI song that i've heard that i like is an unreleased remix by GAVIN of HORSES. great remix. oh well. strangely TORI isn't the only artist that i feel i've outgrown. the same has happened to ANI DIFRANCO. haven't much been interested in anything by her since she released LIVING IN CLIP. *sigh* just getting old i guess. no longer the angst ridden boy that i used to be (i just turned 30 last week so i guess i can't be calling myself a boy anymore...) irvin ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Oct 2003 15:53:31 -0400 (EDT) From: dmw Subject: Re: off topic -- cadence Thanks to everyone who's responded so far, onlist and off. I probably should have clarified that I had a perfectly normal order experience in August; it's only in the September/October timeframe I've had any issue at all. And aside from the lack of communication, it may be that it isn't really Cadence's issue -- they might have shipped my order, and it might have been lost in shipping. I don't want to malign them until I understand the situation better. I would still love to hear from anyone who's heard from them recently, as in the past fortnight or so.
