Yay!) the US release date for the complete series of FIREFLY is DECEMBER 9th. the same date as the 5th season of BUFFY. i've personally never seen an episode of FIREFLY, since i'm neither interested in western/civil war stories nor all that much into sci-fi, but something tells me i might end up picking it, or at least putting it on my christmas wish list. irvin ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Oct 2003 20:40:34 +0200 From: Stefan Adler Subject: AW: rickie lee jones article. I went out after work today and bought Rickie's new CD. I have listened to it once now and I must say I love it. I actually re-discovered Rickie's work when her last album _it's like this_ was released. At that time I stood in the record store, read the track listing and wondered what her version of _show biz kids_ might sound like. Turned out I liked a lot of her covers and especially her approach to Jazz music (not that I know much about Jazz). Alright then, it's time to push that play button again now ... Thoughts on FIREFLY...as a sci-fi fan and certified Buffyholic, I really wanted to like it, to the extent that I kept watching well after I had decided that it just didn't click with me and probably wouldn't. (In fact, I'm pretty sure I caught all of the 11 episodes that aired in the U.S.) I simply didn't care enough about the characters, the dialogue struck me as nothing particularly special, and the plots never seemed to go anywhere that other vaguely offbeat space sagas (most recently FARSCAPE) hadn't already gone. I guess The Whedon's fully engaged in bringing FIREFLY to the big screen at the moment. I wish him the best and hope it does okay at the box office, but I can't say I'll be disappointed when he gets it out of his system and moves on to something else. On a more positive note, I really like where ANGEL seems to be headed these days, after falling off the horse for a season or so with all that Connor crap. ;) I thought the Whedon-penned season premiere in particular was simply hilarious. Am waiting for Sky to air it here. January will be here soon, I suppose. :) Sci-fi here aired Firefly, but I missed it... There wasn't much warning, and the next thing I knew it was over. Btw, I'm liking Eastmountainsouth. CNBC airs Conan O'Brien on Sunday nights, and we caught the last few minutes a bit ago -- saw Eastmountainsouth perform. I bought the CD based on that show. But I'll definitely make a point of going over to The Space -- they have a great open mic, and it's been a while since I've stopped by anyway. Just to post an alternate opinion ... I absolutely adored _Firefly_. It did start a bit slowly, but I place the primary blame on FOX for that, since they forced Joss to come up with a brand-new pilot on very short notice. I found the characters fascinating, in particular River and Inara. River reminded me of a cross between Tara after she'd been brain-sucked by Glory, and Delerium from _The Sandman_. And Kaylee was just too cute for words. :) The love story that simmered between Mal and Inara was particularly well done, too. Jayne was a bit one-dimensional, and I never in a million years could figure out what Zoe saw in Wash, but Gina Torres kicks ass no matter what role she's playing, so I could easily sweep that under the rug. Naturally, the three episodes that never saw the light of day in the US were the best of the lot, and set up what would have been one hell of a second season. There were so many stories to tell ... what happened to River, what drove Inara to sign on with Mal in the first place, and just why was the Shepherd there anyway ... it's a crime that these stories won't have a chance to be told. I hope Joss is able to make the movie happen, but I fear it won't be nearly enough to bring all these threads together to a satisfactory conclusion. >On a more positive note, I really like where ANGEL seems to be headed >these days, after falling off the horse for a season or so with all that >Connor crap. ;) I thought the Whedon-penned season premiere in >particular was simply hilarious.
