I'm curious how its been, I am thinking of going to > Portland for it next month. (Forgive me if I missed anything, I > sometimes don't get to reading all the digests.) The Monday nite show in Chicago seemed very well attended, from what I could see from the main floor. I think the venue is a 2300 or so house (Mitch??), old 20s movie palace style. The audience looked slightly skewed toward the younger end, which I'm interpreting as more Dar/Patty fans. They're jokingly calling this tour "Mail Order Brides from Hell", and frequently referencing it as "The View". The Chicago edition ran for nearly 3 hours (they were onstage from 8:20 till about 11:10), and definitely seemed like a great "girls' night out". It was apparent that these women knew each other well - though the much longer-term relationship between Shawn & MCC was also evident. The "guitar pull", as Mary Chapin Carpenter kept calling it, ran to 5 rounds. During which the women did a combination of a running comedy routine (think an evening of multiple Cheryl Wheelers :-) and a mix of older and newer material. From what I've read, their set list does vary quite a bit. Monday nite included Patty doing "Rain" as a request and "Be Careful" as a dedication to her seatmate on her flight up from Austin. Mary Chapin's selections included a new song for her impending album, "Girls Like Me", as well as the rarely (recently) performed "Jubilee". Dar included "Oh Canada Girls" dedicated to her husband, who was in the audience. I thought Shawn's grouping included the most predictable/expected set of titles ("Polaroids", "Shotgun Down the Avalanche", "tell me why", "you & the Mona Lisa"). Another standout was Patty's cover of Springsteen's "Stolen Cars". And then, there was one of the encore songs, which drew a gradually-rising laughter & applause from the! audience as they recognized it -- dunno the title, but it was a Backstreet Boys song, done singer-songwriter acoustic style . Overall, I wasn't always happy with the sound dynamics in the theatre, which sometimes seemed a bit thin. But overall it was enjoyable. The overall effect of the evening was really a combination of the music and the group dynamics among the women. Plus, it's always great to attend a show which very obviously varies from a standard scripted outing (like where you know what jokes are coming in song intros -- which I was conscious of during part of the recent Susan Werner/Fitzgerald's gig). Tho, anyone who wants an evening primarily of music will probably be frustrated by the show (there was a young guy in the row ahead of me who was obviously there only because of his girlfriend's interest ... by about halfway through the evening, his head was laid back on the chairback, and eventually he left the room :-) Personally, I really enjoyed the interplay between the women. Frequently their reminiscing brought back my own memories of Chicago concerts they referred to. Plus, I always enjoy hearing new or varied arrangements of familiar songs, and find it a pleasure to hear vocal harmonies, an additional instrumentation. AARGH!! that's RIDICULOUS!! > ...Is it costing that much in other locations, > or are we just "special"? I think you guys must just be "special". Here in Chicago, it was in the 20's movie palace in the downtown area. Main floor 12th row tix were "only" $45@ ... plus $2 restoration fee (+ Ticketmaster $5 convenience charge + some other charge). Perhaps your "special" performance includes gold seat covers or something?? (though, considering that for over half the Mary Chapin Carpenter performances I've seen over the last 10 years, I've travelled more than 500 miles, I guess my "extra charges" over the base ticket prices have been a bit higher :-) It does seem that ticket prices around here have a schizophrenic state - some are outrageously high or have several 'special charges' (preservation, amusement tax, parking, etc.), and others are consistently in the $10-15 range. With all the talk I read on some music biz lists about decreases in venue attendance typically attributed to either 'post 9/11' or the economy, I wonder whether these prices are the chicken or egg -- I know that *I* attend fewer shows at the "bigger" venues, where prices are over $40 (other than my obsessive "must sees"), and particularly attend fewer of those "discovery" shows -- where I don't yet know much about the artist. I was a bit surprised at those contemporary choices since I'd expected them to stick to the funky 70's stuff that was used in Out of Sight and that they've been using in the show. Also, last week on Joan of Arcadia, which has been featuring songs from artists such as Avril, 3 Doors Down, Sinead, Warren Zevon, the White Stripes, and Maren Ord, they used a song by the group The Like. I wrote about them this past spring when I reviewed their opening set at the Maria McKee show I saw, and what's kinda weird/serendipitous is that I taped Joan and didn't watch it until Sunday, after I had gotten back from a The Like concert in Hollywood. I didn't even know that their song was on the show. Anyways, I am now a big ass fan of The Like. www.ilikethelike.com Just got news that my friend Kyler England, who just put out a new album, will be opening for Vienna Teng on a bunch of dates up and down the east coast as well as Vienna's hometown gig at the Freight and Salvage in Berkeley. I'm very psyched for Kyler and urge all y'all what are on the fence about seeing Vienna (shame on you) to definitely go see them BOTH. I just listened to the new Azure Ray CD. They continue their This Mortal Coil meets the Indigo Girls sounds of ethereal sound collages and rainy-day folk music. At times, they suffer from the earnestness of both aforementioned groups. Both singers have a pretty-but-detached style that can be a little monotonous, or mesmerizing(dependent on your mood). Still, its a pleasant, drifting soundmelancholy rather than outright depressing. Touches of electronica are discretely added to Simon and Garfunkel (as girls) numbers. File under folktronica, femme style. - --Craig __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Tracy Grammer's vocals evoke a purity and resonance that brings radiance to the songs she performs, and her attention to melody and story lines lends a rare sophistication to her vocal and instrumental interpretations. Her adept accompaniment extends to violin, mandolin, guitar - yet it is her vocal prowess and intuition that infuse her work with a numinous quality and has established her as a formidable performer in her own right.
