Much goodness on the list. The "Pink Martini" album is quite good. (And has sold a LOT of albums over the last three+ years it has been out.) One word...totally freaking amazing. (ok three words...) Last tuesday she alternated singing songs acapella and on keyboard - her stage presence closely matches miss kristeen young (minus the podium)...last night she was playing on this wierd keyboard that only plays one note at a time (she was constantly tuning/adjusting/distorting/feeding back through the thing during each song...The first song she performed by just playing the feedback and reverb being generated by the keyboard (don, you would have been drooling...and every song was in a minor key...)- at times her vocals were reminiscent of kristeen young, the next minute, susan mckeown Her new (it was released in february so it is just new to me i guess) album "passion play" (which I bought but havent had a chance to listen to yet) is bound to be spectacular if it comes even close to her live shows - "reddle woman" "spaceboy" and "borderline" were just gorgeous live... london-ectos - go see her next week! jason np Carina Round - the disconnection (whoowhoo!!!!) / Heather Nova "storm" (back to the Heather I adore!!!) btw, i picked up an extra copy of one of the thea gilmore juliet eps if anyone is interested (i didnt realize there were two so i went back and bought the set not remembering what i bought originally, for 50 pence it was worth it! - other interesting finds for less than a quid - both cerys matthews (catatonia singer) singles, and Poly Philips's cd whom I know nothing about but quite liked the few tracks I listened to on the crummy laptop speakers ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Oct 2003 19:19:02 -0400 From: Michael Curry Subject: Re: Half a Loon, for Dessert/OTR At 11:22 PM 10/13/03 -0400, meredith wrote: >Paul noted: > >>Ectophiles have been scarce at the shows I've been going to in NYC lately. >>In fact, I haven't seen any. >> >>Two weekends ago it was Two Loons for Tea at the Continental. Well, that's a better excuse than your one for missing them on Monday at the Iron Horse. ;) That show was shockingly empty (they ended up opening the upper level only during the openers) for an OtR show at the Iron Horse, at least in my experience. Usually they pretty much sell the joint out. Oh, and it was a good show, though I am not at all fond of the guitarist they've brought around on this tour. >Susan McKeown is at the Bottom Line next week, though -- we will definitely >be there for that!! I'll be missing Susan's Bottom Line show I think, but I'm determined not to miss the one at the Living Room. And hopefully I'll be catching Vienna when she plays in Hartford on Nov 5th, even though she apparently isn't scheduled to be going onstage 'til 10:00. Opening for them on this Australian tour is a young Melbourne singer/songwriter called Missy Higgins, who I think will be someone to watch out for. She played mostly the piano but also went to the guitar for one or two songs. She's got a great voice and great songs. Apparently Missy won the Victorian version of JJJ Unearthed a few years ago while still in high school but decided to live a little more life before embarking on her career, which I think is great. She's got an EP coming out here in a few days which I'll be picking up. See http://www.missyhiggins.com for more info... Also on the subject of Aussie singer/songwriters - I found a secondhand copy of Penny Flanagan's out-of-print EP "Seven Flights Up". The cover's damaged but apart from that it seems to be OK. If anyone wants to trade for it, let me know... Of course, since this is ecto, you might try searching for Happy -- at which point you'll be warned off buying any of her albums because they're all published by Samson (?! did Samson ever actually print/distribute anything other than MWABT?). I actually had a disagreement with the guy who runs RIAA Radar on MetaFilter back in July. I'm not much of a record reviewer. Music is an emotional experience and I have a difficult time intellectualizing my feelings. My reviews tend to be in the nature of: Wow, I really love this cd or Wow, I really hate that cd. Not too informative. Having said that, there have been two inquiries as to Emmylou Harris's newest recording. Perhaps there were off list replies but I haven't seen a response on line. Well......Wow, I really, really love this cd! I think that this may be her most ecto-friendly cd ever. 3 or 4 tracks have the lovely voice of Jane Siberry backing. About a half dozen songs were co-written with the McGarrigle sisters who play and sing back up as well. One of the folks asking about the cd said they had heard it wasn't as good as Red Dirt Girl. I should probably dig out my copy and give it another listen before I say this but I think SiG may be better. And I love RDG. SiG has a different feeling altogether of course. Not a country gal looking back at her roots. But a mature woman looking into her soul and doing a damn good job of letting us know what she found there. The cut Lost Unto This World brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it. Moving lyrics concerning the hard row to hoe some women have had. She does such a fine job of expressing her feelings. If you like Emmylou cause you want to hear some fine old country hits, buy an older cd instead. If you enjoy ecto fare (and that's why we're all here of course) run out and buy this one tomorrow. It's wonderful. Ed ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V9 #292 **************************
