I havent heard it, and I'm curious about whether I should buy it or not. Someone told me it was not nearly as good as Red Dirt Girl.... ? Did you all see that the cover article in the new Paste Magazine is about Rufus Wainwright? There are also articles about Tracy Grammer and Dido in there, and I tried to go get it at Barnes and Noble but they were all out, so I might have to order it online... http://www.pastemagazine.com/action/article?article_id=239 Also, anyone heard of Caroline Herring from Austin? Someone sent me her CD and its pretty good... I thought I changed to reply address) She had a serious breakdown after her first album, because she is not a very strong person and couldn't handle the media and not being able to come down. So the new album is about that time and the three years thereafter - very very strong album both lyrically and musically. The single You Were Not There was a big seller this Summer helped by a wonderful video. Another norwegian band now out with a new album out is Briskeby, which also is very strong but I already knew it would be because I saw them perform most of the songs back in August. And a huge plus is that it hasn't got any copy protection. - -- Yngve ****************************************** * E-mail: onealien@mo.himolde.no ********* * Cell: +47 41330571 ********************* ***** Blessed be!!! ********************** ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Oct 2003 04:16:13 -0700 From: "The Ectophiles' Guide" Subject: Recent changes to the Ectophiles' Guide Latest changes to the Ectophiles' Guide 12 October 2003 New Guide entries added for: * Roy Harper * Kyler * Various Artists: Undiscovered Gems * Noe Venable Changes made to the entries for: * Baxter (new album) * Libby Kirkpatrick (new album) - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- You are receiving this email because you have asked to be notified of updates to the Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music at http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/. She's got a lot of notable bluegrass players on it, like Peter Rowan, that contribute to the fullness of the album without making it sound like a bluegrass album. They provide a lot of nice texture. neal ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Oct 2003 19:12:44 EDT From: Kosterhaudt@aol.com Subject: Happy Rhodes Tour Dates/NYC confirmed Nov. 1 Phila., PA Tin Angel Nov. 4 New York, NY The Bottom Line Nov. 5 Denville, NJ Urban Muse Nov. 6 Harrisburg, PA Second Floor Gallery Nov. 7 Pittsburgh, PA Quiet Storm Coffeehouse Nov. 8 Cleveland, OH Beachland Ballroom Nov. 9 Toledo, OH House Concert - Lynn Garrett Nov. 11 Kenosha, WI - Chip Lueck Nov. 12 Chicago, Il Martyrs Ken Osterhaudt Auntie Social Music www.auntiesocialmusic.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Oct 2003 21:01:46 -0400 From: Paul Blair Subject: Half a Loon, for Dessert/OTR Ectophiles have been scarce at the shows I've been going to in NYC lately. In fact, I haven't seen any. Two weekends ago it was Two Loons for Tea at the Continental. I arrived at 9:00, was informed the band was scheduled to go on at 9:30, and had to wait till 10:30 for them to take the stage. I sat through one unmemorable but not unbearable garage band, and a second act called Blue Tone Vibe that may be worth some more investigation. (Anyone know anything about them?) By the time Two Loons came on, it was late enough where I was thinking I needed to leave, but the band had come so highly recommended that I promised myself I'd stay for a little while at least. They started with a tune that reminded me musically--before any singing happened--of Dorothy Scott's "Julie." I did enjoy the instrumental side of the band, but once Sarah opened her mouth I knew it wasn't for me; just didn't like the voice. So I didn't stay long. Last night I caught Over the Rhine's late show at the Bottom Line--not terribly crowded, but not embarrassingly empty either. Opening were, first, Susan Enan--an earnest girl with a guitar in the Suzanne Vega vein from Northern Ireland, and then Steven Delopoulos, who could do a lot with his guitar but whose lyrics bored me silly. OTR is touring with the following band: Paul "Smokey" Moke - lead guitar(s) and sitar; white guy with dreadlocks from Mississippi. Will Sayles - Drums; from Dallas Rick Plant - Bass; from Boston. Porkpie hat. plus Karin and Linford. Through the 13 songs in the set, Paul Moke used a different guitar on 10 or 11: Sitar, slide guitar, a little funny thing called a mandotar, an acoustic, and a zillion different electric guitars; I wish I knew the varieties. Karin picked up the acoustic guitar for a couple of songs, and did a piano solo for "Ohio." Here's the set list: 1. Spinning (w/sitar) 2. Bothered - a big, prog arrangement that reminded me a bit of early Genesis 3. Long Lost Brother (slide guitar) 4. Show Me 5. She 6. Nobody Number One (w/mandotar) 7. Lifelong Fling 8. Ain't No Sunshine When He's Gone (sung by Karin, of course) 9. Ohio (Karin piano solo) 10. Suitcase 11. All I Need Is Everything - here's where the "big rock sound" got muddy and didn't work too well 12. The World Can Wait - the sound on this one got muddy too Encore: Changes Come - this one started out quiet, but by the end it got into big wailing guitar--not exactly "Stairway to Heaven," but the same idea. This one kicked butt. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Oct 2003 23:22:25 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: Half a Loon, for Dessert/OTR Hi, Paul noted: >Ectophiles have been scarce at the shows I've been going to in NYC lately. >In fact, I haven't seen any. > >Two weekends ago it was Two Loons for Tea at the Continental. This is why woj and I didn't make it down ... we had a feeling it was going to go very late, and we've found that starting the week off with a late night isn't a good idea. We really, really, really wanted to go, though -- I in particular *love* Two Loons For Tea, and I'm hoping this isn't their only trip to this time zone to play. I thought Jason Gordon was going to go to the show, though -- Jason, did you make it? >Last night I caught Over the Rhine's late show at the Bottom Line--not >terribly crowded, but not embarrassingly empty either. woj and I have an excuse for this one, too -- we were on our way home from a weekend in Buffalo last night. Susan McKeown is at the Bottom Line next week, though -- we will definitely be there for that!! And Vienna Teng is opening for Robyn Hitchcock there on Halloween. We won't be missing that one, either. =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Oct 2003 17:44:07 -0700 From: Neile Graham Subject: Fwd: Penelope's Houston news >Resent-Date: Mon, 13 Oct 2003 14:10:20 -0700 >Date: Mon, 13 Oct 2003 11:23:53 -0700 >From: "P.
