Subject: Today's Guardian: Carina Round and Liz Phair Yep, a double-barrelled treat in today's Guardian, where they review both Carina's and Liz's new releases. Or, maybe not, if you're a Liz fan. She gets 1 out of 5 stars, and comments like: "Phair has become crass and bloated, her lyrics crude and her image apparently a grotesque exercise in self-parody....Not a pretty sight. Or sound.". Ooooh, that's GOTTA hurt. Meanwhile, Carina, already recipient of a glowing review for her gig at the Spitz last week, gets another one for her second album, "The Disconnection": four out of five stars, and quotes like "These songs have the grip of an addiction, and never settle anywhere long enough to be brought to heel...Her tantalising lines are delivered with as many vocal gymnastics as Jeff Buckley but she never sounds mannered or over the top....It's an almost casual treat from an emerging artist whose promise may well be boundless." Hmmm, not sure about the Jeff Buckley comparison. Fortunately, I've managed to lay my hands on a copy of "The Disconnection" already, and have listened to it a few times. It doesn't give me the same visceral thrill as her first one, which I knew immediately was great. It all sounds cleaned up and not quite as full-on as her first one, as well as her live versions of these songs For those of you after a link, the best I can do is: http://www.guardian.co.uk/arts/reviews/pop/0,12247,755751,00.html and I hope it works. There's also a review of Shelby Lynne's new release in there, somewhere. adam k. np: Phil Ochs' No More Songs & Rehearsals for Retirement, 'cos we buried Pete --a good man in bad times-- today. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Oct 2003 11:16:56 -0000 From: Chip Lueck <> Subject: Happy living room concert--Chicago/Milwaukee area Hi all! My wife Jo and I are pleased to announce that Happy and her band will be performing a living room concert at our home in Kenosha, WI! Date: November 11, 2003 Time: 7:00 p.m. Where the heck is Kenosha, you may wonder? It's about 30 minutes south of Milwaukee, and about an hour north of Chicago. Please RSVP to me at cl@luisys.com as soon as possible since this is only a month away. We want to ensure that all ectophiles get priority before we start announcing this via other sources! Metra (Chicago) has regular train service to Kenosha, and we are also close to an Amtrak station (Sturtevant, WI). I can provide further information, and directions, etc. privately to those who respond. We look forward to seeing you! - -Chip ________________________________________________ This mail was sent by UebiMiau 2.5 ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Oct 2003 11:13:21 -0600 From: Jessica Byers Subject: Free Rose Polenzani show at Toad in Cambridge, MA 10-11 FYI > >a. tomorrow, Saturday! a free show at TOAD >in Cambridge (many of you will be excited to >note that the smoking ban is ON in Cambridge >and Somerville. As always, lots of nice choices, but nothing that would make me pass up an evening with friends. However, I did find a few things that caught me off guard. Like the Swimming Pool Q's being on tour. A quick poke around the web showed that the Q's have just released "Royal Academy of Reality" - their first album in more then 10 years. Occasional Q's vocalist Anne Richmond Boston is not listed as a member of the group, but it does say that she got involved late in the project and does back-up and a few lead vocals. No indication that she is on tour with the band though. I also found a record review for Vyktoria Pratt Keating. I remember being fond of her 1997 release "this guardian at noon", though it's been so long since I listened to it that I don't remember it very well. Kind of fairy folk pop. (I like the "Nanci Griffith meets Lost in Space" comment in her bio.) Anyway, she has a record release party, and a glance at her web site shows that she released a live album 2 years ago from her tour opening for Jethro Tull, and the new album ("things that fall from the sky") that she made with Tull keyboardist Andrew Giddings. Anyone heard either of these? neal ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V9 #287 **************************
