I don't have The Mirror Pool handy, but as I recall the versions aren't that different, except for the enthusiastic applause at the end. ;-) I yesterday noticed that Dead Can Dance was used as the background music in an ad for an upcoming nature programme here. music like Enya, Dead Can Dance, Tangerine Dream and Yello seem to be used a lot for that purpose, since they are kind of unobtrusive, and possibly also relatively unknown, and therefore doesn't carry over an image from the artist hermself. - -- Kjetil T. | read and make up your own mind np: Pet: "Pet" | http://www.cactus48.com/truth.html ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Sep 2003 15:15:26 -0000 From: "neal copperman" Subject: Re: unexpected ecto Kjetil Torgrim Homme said: > music like > Enya, Dead Can Dance, Tangerine Dream and Yello seem to be used a lot > for that purpose, since they are kind of unobtrusive, and possibly > also relatively unknown, and therefore doesn't carry over an image > from the artist hermself. Wow, is Enya really relatively unknown in Norway? There was a period in the early days of Watermark where that was true here, but she ended up being the soft sell music of the 90's. Her music was EVERYWHERE in the States. For the record, the soft sell music of the 80's was Vivaldi's Four Seasons :) neal ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Sep 2003 09:38:41 -0700 From: Damon Subject: Re: Erin McKeown playing London On 25 Sep, Adam K. wrote: > For all you London ecto's who might be interested: Erin McKeown is playing > the Bush Hall, near Shepherd's Bush, November 3rd. go see her if you can! she puts on a great show, really high-energy infectuous fun. at least when i saw her here in vancouver a few months ago she certainly did! :) - -damon - -- dl+ecto@usrbin.ca: protecting my real address since 2002 (too late!) > EWS starts here! < ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Sep 2003 12:19:51 -0500 (CDT) From: "Mitchell A. It reported that Sirius satellite radio has offered to pay the club's back rent, and wants to sponsor a series of concerts there, presumably by headliners rather than the independent artists whose appearances we are partial to, in order to increase the BL's mass appeal (and presumably gross receipts). That's too bad, I was really looking forward to that bar's demise, especially after noticing they're up to they're old tricks with an upcoming Vienna Teng show, priced at $25 plus the usual drink minimums. Ugh. The question I ask is, did The Bottom Line fall on hard times because it drove away customers with high prices and short set times, or did the owners just manage to squander all their profits instead of paying the rent? Either way, I'm not sure they deserved such a cushy bailout. Sirius has its own interst in mind, of course, since they already do a lot of recording at The Bottom Line and use those sessions to provide content for their "live music" channel. I believe former WFUV, now-Sirius host Meg Griffin had a lot to do with the rescue plan. Anyway, it's good news for those who were hoping for a miracle reprieve for that place. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Sep 2003 14:39:39 -0700 From: "[[ todd bramy ]]" Subject: Two Loons 1st leg wrap-up Catch Two Loons For Tea on the East Coast and then at their homecoming back in Seattle. Hi, Dan commented: >That's too bad, I was really looking forward to that bar's demise, >especially after noticing they're up to they're old tricks with an >upcoming Vienna Teng show, priced at $25 plus the usual drink minimums. Vienna's scheduled to play there on Halloween, right? Well, so is Robyn Hitchcock ... which leads me to believe that Vienna is going to be opening for Robyn, and also explains the high ticket price. (Though honestly, that pairing is rather inexplicable...) Even the Bottom Line keeps their ticket prices relatively low for lesser-known artists, so I would expect that if Vienna were headlining you'd be looking at a $12 ticket instead of $25. Which is high for a lesser-known artist, but still. Robyn fills the place almost every time he plays there, so having him might even turn out to be a moneymaker for the club (though I don't know how many people not named woj are going to want to brave Greenwich Village on Halloween if they're not going to the parade...). > Ugh. Either way, I'm not sure they deserved such a cushy bailout. Well, it's not a completely cushy bailout. Allan Pepper essentially just bought 30 days' worth of time to renegotiate his lease with NYU, and if that doesn't happen they're back to where they started. The news story I saw today (http://www.rollingstone.com/news/newsarticle.asp?nid=18730) states that "if no agreement can be reached over a future lease, the $185,000 will be returned to Sirius", which means they won't have their back rent paid after all. According to the Reuters story (http://reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=entertainmentNews&storyID=3503575), the conditions of the reprieve also include "operational and structural improvements". What those operational improvements are is anyone's guess, but we can only hope that NYU is going to force them to rewrite their business plan and switch to a more viable model, i.e. only one show a night unless the first show sells out and there is demand for another, cheaper ticket prices, etc. The next four weeks are going to be interesting as far as this goes, I think ... =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Sep 2003 18:04:59 -0700 From: cyo@landoftheblind.com Subject: Seattle-Washington fans, Blind in Tacoma on Sat./Portland fans-Sat.Market on Sunday/Eugene fans, sorry charlie!!!!! Hi ectos for any fans in Washington-Seattle-Tacoma area CYOAKHA GRACE and LAND OF THE BLIND are performing this weekend at the Center for Spiritual Living, 206 "J" St., Tacoma 253 383 3151 or 253 472-4014 for more info doors open at 7, concert at 7:30. As in a slightly larger house concert, there will be food, yummies, drinks, and an informal atmosphere. We will play a mellow, dreamy meditative set first, for those who like it quiet Dead Can Dancey. Second set, after break, we will kick it up a bit, but more medium world vocal dance style, no club volumes or feels. I have moved into "loopland" creating lovely, strange "beds" of sound since the soundtrack for Lovecraft's Kadath, I want to let folks know it is a little different than what you've heard before. Krystov, of "old" Blind is still on didgeridoo, sitar and dulcimer. I am plays keys, harmonium, loops and sing. Blind's latest member is Celtic fiddler extraordinaire', bay area's best, Alison Bailey, adding her Celt feel. On bass is wonderful Kate the Great, from my new project, DRUID SISTERS TEA PARTY, (bay area folks can see them when Wendy Rule arrives to tour with me, Nov. 8th). It should be a very great show, a one of a kind evening, Blind won't get up this far north again for a long time. JoAnn Whitsell from ectolist is coming that night, now that she's in Washington and not NY. Hope to see you! For Portland Fans, we are playing the next day, Sunday the 28th, at Portland Saturday Market, under the Burnside Bridge, 2pm until 4pm. We have former Blind hand drummer, Johnathan Howitt, (Children of Paradise) sitting in, as well as a possible dance performance from the lovely Regina LaRocca, Portland Blind's old bass player and a great dancer, hell, she may jump on stage and play bass too! I have invited our former flutist, Melo also! Could be old home week for Blind. Eugene ecto-friends and fans; I am sorry to say Blind is cancelling Sunday's gig at Sam Bond's. After ten years on the road, several songwriting awards and 3 albums, I am not a happy camper when clubs treat bands badly or bookers are disorganized. Sorry, been there, done that! We apologize if you planned on it, or see it listed in newspapers, the club is the one that messed up the schedule. I have people that have to fly out of Portland back to SF that night, so I "canned it". But PLEASE come see us instead at our 6th Annual Wow Hall Witches Ball in Eugene on Oct. 25th, same exact line up!!!and lots more fun!! ------------------------------ Date: 25 Sep 2003 18:58:21 -0700 From: "Michael Pearce" Subject: Re: unexpected ecto On "The Brotherhood of Poland, NH" yesterday (following the West Wing), Mare Winningham sang a beautiful song from one of my all-time favorite movies, "One From The Heart."
