We've been boycotting the World Music Festival for the last few years, but I missed some great great people last year, and still feel bad about it, so I might break my boycott this year. (All the other city-sponsored festivals in Chicago, Jazz/Blues/Country Music/Celtic, are free to the public. The World Music Festival charges for most of their shows. It's just not right, since the large immigrant populations in the city would be more likely to attend this particular "festival." I've complained to the city numerous times.) The show on the 20th is at the Empty Bottle (1035 N. Western Ave.) at 10:00pm. The show the 21st is a free show at Borders Books & Music (830 N. Michigan Ave.) at 2:00pm. Here's what the Chicago World Music Festival website (http://www.ci.chi.il.us/WorldMusic/index.html) says about them: From Italy, Grandmother's old songs backed by new beats. Fiamma is Italian for "flame" = the energy of the present. Fumana means "fog" or "mist" = the mysterious resilience of the past. Fiamma Fumana are three young Italians, on a quest to remember what is being forgotten in their local culture and bring the songs to pop music. Fiamma Fumana were formed in 1998 by three people who shared a love for the musical tradition of Northern Italy in general and their native Emilia Romagna in particular, but had otherwise very diverse backgrounds. Alberto Cottica, accordionist guitarist and pianist, has been active in the Italian folk-rock music scene, for over ten years as co-founder of the highly successful (over 350,000 albums sold) Modena City Ramblers; Marco Bertoni is an electronic musician and record producer; Fiamma Orlandi, at 22, was then an absolute beginner who had been brought up musically in the Emilian countryside, by her mother and grandmother. Her singing is a unique blend of traditional style and modern sensitivity. The trio carefully selected and balanced these elements: Fiamma Fumana is simultaneously a tribute to the tradition of female vocals of Emilia and Italy in general (like the choirs of mondine, the rice gatherers who were all young girls), and a revitalization of that tradition by a new generation and its musical culture = electronic dance music, the most natural musical expression for Fiamma and people her age in post-industrial and affluent Italy. The result is an intriguing blend of old Italian dance tunes played to new Italian dance grooves, traditional ballads and state-of-the art electronics. www.sroartists.com/artists/fiammafumana/ ============= Yeah, I have to go, at least to the free show. Noe Venable The World is Bound by Secret Knots by Michael Henningsen (Petridish) Frankly, it took me awhile to get past the Tori Amos-ness of Noe Venable's melodies and wafting soprano. Once I did, though, I found myself increasingly drawn into her third record, which also features guitarist Nels Cline and brilliant multi-instrumentalist Todd Sickafoose. Venable is a goth incarnation of Kate Bush without the pretentiousness, a hippie version of Suzanne Vega: lyrically, just as affecting, but not as uptight. Neither easy listening nor easy to listen to, The World ... is intricate, dense and challenging. But the payoff is complete immersion in the artistry of the most important artist since Joseph Arthur. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Sep 2003 09:13:54 -0700 (PDT) From: Neile Graham Subject: Willow on the road: ID, UT, CO, WY, NM, CA, OR, WA For those in the areas. - --Neile - ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Tue, 16 Sep 2003 08:08:20 -0600 (MDT) From: Willow Subject: Willow on the road! This is great. The whole thread is full of the people responsible for having and sharing the music being told by other people what the music is and where it came from! (Not a knock on Vickie. I'm firmly in the first group myself.) :) neal ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Sep 2003 15:31:06 -0500 From: "Xenu's Sister" Subject: Re: help with song At 03:37 PM 9/16/2003 +0000, Neal wrote: >Anyone know what it's on? My poor brain wouldn't come up with that information either, so I looked around Google. It's on the vinyl "Don't Talk" 12" but since I don't have that, I'm still mystified where I got it to put it on the HGP. Maybe it was on a compilation tape someone made for me. No chance - the lady has actually been very busy, as you can see... A pity that there are no NYC dates, but given the dicey situation with The Bottom Line (which, I have to confess, I have no stomach to ever brave again), it may be just as well. I can accept the album by itself. They're in the midst of their first ever tour and featuring some good vocalists -Kristy Thirsk, Shelley Harland, & Chemda. I have a couple of tickets for Thurday's show at The Guvernment in Toronto but my concert-going buddy can't make it and I really should be doing something else so I'm looking to sell one or both of these. It's not sold out (yet!) so willing to take a loss on them. Ordered these via Ticketmaster soon after they went on sale. They're Section GA0, GA3, seats 9-10 which cost me $48 CAD with Ticketmaster's pound of flesh. Please let me know if interested. If anyone else is interested in catching this tour, they still have remaining dates in Montreal, Boston, NYC, Philadelphia, Washington, and Atlanta. Last time she toured, Jeff Hanson and I flew out to Arizona to see her. Sadly, it was the least inspired of the half dozen or so times I've seen Jane. And probably the only show that wasn't actually worth flying to Arizona for. I'd love to hear someone tell me that this tour is much more exciting :) neal ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Sep 2003 22:05:57 -0700 From: cyo@landoftheblind.com Subject: save the Bottom Line, please!!!!! Dear Mr. Beckman and Ms. Brown, I am an artist, singer-songwriter from San Francisco, and before that from Portland Oregon. The highlight of my few affordable tours with my band, driving all the way across the country, was being able to play New York City, yes, at the Bottom Line. It's well known among artists as the one place that interesting and unusual artists can appear at and be seen by New Yorkers. Please be open to whatever deal you can make with them so that you can be paid your fair rent, and they can remain open and viable, as a wonderful outlet for artists such as myself. The clubs available, due to rising rents, in many cities, just keep disappearing, yet the amount of artists needing places to play, to share their art, keeps growing. This has been a major problem in San Francisco, resulting in 3/4 of the artists in the city moving across the bay when the city's cyber-driven high-rent economy crashed. The clubs and rehearsal spaces could not afford to remain and moved across the bay. The economy is slowly starting to recover now, but the artists, art-spaces, little theatres, rehearsal spaces and clubs did not return. Thus, an out of town visitor to SF no longer has the option to go see interesting art, and SF's well-known reputation for a city of the arts is defiantly slipping. Who knows how this will affect things, economy and touristism in the long run. Not everyone wants to buy some sourdough bread, see the orange bridge and go home to Idaho. I would hate to think of all the folks that come into NYC to see rare artists, having no choices left, and you, as an educator, are aware of the reputation of the arts in NYC and in a position to secure the small clubs that are invaluable in that support. Not all of us artists are stadium-bound Brittanys, but we do have our listeners anyway. Please be a supporter of the arts in NYC. Thank you for your time and openness to The Bottom Line. thank you, peace, cyoakha grace o'manion of LAND OF THE BLIND, San Francisco ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V9 #263 **************************
