Has anyone actually heard this yet? I was kind of disappointed by her last record. It also had a "rekindling the past spirits of American folk music" vibe, which seemed a little too PBS to be terribly exciting. I think it's interesting that she's doing "Crazy Man Michael." I'm not sure what you could do to add to that original Fairport version. It's timeless. How about the new John & Mary CD? Has anyone heard that? I didn't think it was quite as enrapturing as their first two discs, but it had some new twists, like reverb swamped vocals a couple of times, and more complex string arrangements. One song had a sampled reverse guitar track from the late Rob Buck. And this is the craziest thing. 10,000 Maniacs now have a third new lead singer. Oskar Saville. People compare her to Melissa Etherdige and Janis Joplin. I think they're playing mainly eighties 10km songs. > Date: Thu, 11 Sep 2003 08:29:22 -0700 (PDT) > From: Craig Gidney > Subject: Natalie Merchant, The House Carpenters Daughter. > > This is Merchants homage to folk and traditional > music, and as such, it threatens to suffer under > an anthropological earnestness. Now that I'd pay for! haha! I never was able to take them seriously simply due to their name. as you may know, it means "Do you remember" in Norwegian (or Danish). one of the most popular TV programmes in Norway during the 70s and 80s was a program called "Husker du" which featured the kind of music and interviews sixty year-olds and up enjoyed. we're talking staid, staid, staid. "Husker Du" getting together for a reunion would be just too ironic... I can't come up with _any_ reunions I'd like to see. (Throwing Muses already did :-). The really cool thing is how they rotate band members as they make their way across the country. They seem to get the very best players and always different instrument combinations. Amazing. And really just as entertaining as a duo. I recommend catching them if they come to your town or at least picking up one of their cds. Check out twoloons.com for a full tour itinerary. - -Todd ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Sep 2003 10:29:54 -0500 (CDT) From: gshell@metronet.com Subject: Re: Fwd: Two Loons for Tea in Texas On Thu, 11 Sep 2003, Neile Graham wrote: > >Mike Dillon: vibes & percussion (Critters Buggin, Brave Combo, etc.) mike dillon? is this the mike dillon from 'Ten Hands' and 'BillyGoat'? that guy was a fucking loon, but one hell of a percussionist. it got so bad that 'ten hands' got rid of him. 'ten hands' faded fast and earl harvin followed mike's lead and joined 'billygoat'. i can't remember for sure if 'billy goat' even existed before harvin left 'ten hands'. man ooh man could they put on a show. both of them are exceptional percussionists. i know this is going to sound amazing but harvin joined sly and the family when he was about 12 years old. those idiots fucked him up so bad he quite music for a considerable period. sly should have been put in prison, but that's another story. i'm sure glad he resumed. check out some stuff from the earl harvin trio and you should be impressed. i don't know if any 'billygoat' stuff is available but if it is check it out. stuff from 'ten hands' is still around. damn, that means i almost have to go. lucinda williams is playing at the gypsy tea room on the 18th as well. that is going to be an expensive week. gSs ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Sep 2003 15:11:08 -0700 From: cyo@landoftheblind.com Subject: Re: seattle house concerts/sf house concerts? any ectos in seattle do house concerts? Blind and I have a mini tour up north end of this month and would love to add one night at a small intimate venue...A 20 person living room would be just right. also, we are up again 3rd weekend in Oct for a huge gig in eugene, a portland area or seattle area house concert would be just right on that one too. When Wendy Rule arrives and stays with me first week of nov, we had planned on touring up north together, but 3 trips up in two months is enough for me, so we are planning to do some double trance & folk gigs here in the sf area....any cool small club ideas from ecto folk? or any house concert venues in bay area I don't know about??? thanks for your ideas. cyoakha ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Sep 2003 00:24:33 -0400 From: Mike Connell Subject: Best 2 person group ever - Simon & Garfunkel I'm sitting here watching Simon & Garfunkel on Letterman and I cannot help but think that no question these two comprised, and once again comprise to make the best ever duo that ever hit the biz.
