Sorry for the "bulk" message and if you get the message for than once. I saw this preliminary tour info for the group Varttina in the new email newsletter from Northside Records: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ VDRTTIND November 11, 2003: New York, NY (details forthcoming) November 12, 2003: Washington, DC (details forthcoming) November 13, 2003: Durham, NC (details forthcoming) November 15, 2003: Madison, WI, Wisconsin Union Theater November 16, 2003: Minneapolis, MN: Cedar Cultural Center ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you have any kind of ear for "world" or folk-based music, with some unbelievable vocals, you need to clear your schedule for one of these days, assuming that one or more of these cities is convenient for you. When this trio of female singers gets cranked up, it sounds like something from another planet. I assume that details as they arise will be available on the group's website: http://www.varttina.com. This is Merchants homage to folk and traditional music, and as such, it threatens to suffer under an anthropological earnestness. However, the sounds are lovely and autumnalviolins, tentatively plucked banjosin a way that wouldnt sound out of place in PBS or NPR special. The striking thing is Merchants voice. It no longer has the lithe, little girl lilt of the past. She sounds older, her voice crackles. Theres a matronly gravitas, and an understated passion, that runs through her readings of these songs. Highlights include the Fairport Convention tune Crazy Man Michael and the murder ballad, Diver Boy. - --Craig L. Gidney __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! I'm looking forward to getting this somewhere along the way. I saw her perform most (if not all) of these songs live during her folk music tour in 2001. It was an amazing show, and I'm glad she decided to finally release some official versions. :) Where did you get your copy, by the way? Did you order through her website?
