William Mazur's praising and kind words are so touching and I'm extremely grateful and elated that my music is hitting it's emotional targets. Radio has been wonderful. Echoes had it at #9 in their top 25 for August, Musical Starstreams will have it as a featured release on Sunday. Life is groovy. BUT...........while Ms.Rhodes and I no longer work together, and while we may have influenced each other's muses from time to time, I have to state that my musical input on her albums was somewhat minimal. Especially MWABT. That is truly a solo work in all respects. I had parts to play from time to time and lent an objective ear now and then, but the Happy Rhodes music that you hear is really Happy Rhodes' music. She is one of the most capable and inventive studio artists I know. Those are her orchestrations, arrangements, and mostly all her playing. Certainly her writing. I used to get alot of credit for her albums while she received accolades for her voice. I would always say that "It's really all her" and it is ! Her talents know no bounds and it's important to me for people to know that she deserves the props for her music. Not me. Happy and I were close and we may have informed each other's music, but know that the girl is her own artist and there isn't any studio thing she lacks. She is a gift, and creativity oozes from her every pore. So William, thank you for your wonderful compliments and observations. They truly mean alot to me as does everyone's support. Thanks for clearing that up :) Heh. :-) I have to admit that the lushly electronic feel of _Near Life Experience_ reminds me of _Warpaint_ or _Many Worlds are Born Tonight_, but I can also believe that they were as much Happy's work as _NLE_ was Kevin's. I've actually had my copy of _NLE_ for a couple weeks now (I hope my check got to Kevin as fast as the CD he sent got to me -- I told him I was sending the check on a Friday, and the CD arrived the following Monday!) and let's face it, words fail me. Fortunately there are other people out there whose verbal abilities don't break down when exposed to excellent music; I always feel somewhat tongue-tied in the presence of the music I like the most. I can only add that Kevin has indeed done a rich, masterful, stunningly beautiful piece of work. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Sep 2003 08:20:40 -0400 (EDT) From: dmw Subject: Re: Warren Zevon On Mon, 8 Sep 2003, meredith wrote: > >I'm still kicking myself for missing his Letterman appearance last fall. > >Don't know how I managed to do that :-( > > I missed it too, but I wouldn't at all be surprised to see the appearance > rebroadcast soon, maybe even as soon as tonight. I didn't miss it, but I wish I had. The interview segments were mostly so superficial as to verge on insulting, and the music performances were less than stellar. I found it really painful to watch. If you have friends in Bend, tell them to listen to Clear 101.7 on September 28th; they are going to air a 30 minute interview and spotlight on my CD. If you have any ideas for me about venues, stations, press, opportunities in Oregon and California, let me know! I've come to believe that it's totally possible to do this independently, make a living and have a blast doing it! Everything is working out beautifully. I have been listening to him for a couple of years now, ever since I heard "Sentimental H" in a friends' car. It's a really simple song, but I was drawn to the intensity and desolation of it. It's kind of like cynical intelligent rock and roll on a rugged highway side with lots of cracks and wear in the pavement. He was awfully unique. Closest thing I can think of is Tom Waits, and they're worlds apart. It offers more insight into Happy's music and her creation of it. IMHO, you deserve all of the accolades that you are receiving. You created a beautiful piece of art. It seems like you have gone through some very tough times over the past few years. I am very happy that things are looking up for you. I hope life is getting better for Happy as well. She also seems to have had a rough couple of years. It is bittersweet that such a joyous occasion for us Happy fans on the West Coast, the Ectofest West, was such a tragic time for Happy. I did not mean for my comments to in any way diminish Happy's contribution to her own music. I respect Happy as an artist and musician. I have never seen Happy as being just an amazing singer. I have always viewed Happy as a consummate artist who has an incredible voice, is a poignant lyricist, a very good keyboardist/guitarist along with being an all around musician, arranger and engineer/producer. After hearing NLE, I guess that I assumed that many of the atmospheric elements on her recordings were a direct input or influence from you. Definitely when I listen to "The Keep" I hear an equal amount of influence from each of you (you, Happy and Carl) in creating the dreamy atmospheric quality to the music. Obviously though, that CD is much different than any of the studio recordings. When I listen to music I allow it to hit me emotionally first. That is the most important thing to me. Does it touch me in some way? Does it make me feel something? After that initial impact and once the music starts to settle into my soul then my analytical side comes out. I want to understand the layers and components of what makes the music speak to me. Your music and Happy's music both speak to me and have a positive impact on me. Thank you both for sharing your music. I was reading the new issue of Women Who Rock magazine, and saw an interesting ad for a band called "Blackmore's Night." I'm sorry if this was discussed here before and I missed it. Anyway, the ad said "with Stevie Nicks mysticism and Loreena McKennitt's mood setting lyrics and troubadour vocals, Candice Night's vocals are an ideal balance to Blackmore's rock guitar prowes..." and: "The clear, high lead vocals of Candice Night runs the gamut of between vintage Stevie Nicks and Heart's Ann Wilson..." I'm a fan of all the music they are compared to. Does anyone own any of their cds? Do they live up to this description? I e-mailed WXPN to see if they would be broadcasting any kind of tribute to Warren Zevon. They replied that they would have a special World Cafe tribute. The confusing thing in their response was that it said it would be broadcast in Friday, September 9th. I e-mailed them back to clarify if this was on today (which means I missed it) or if it's on this Friday, Sept. 12th. I don't know if it will be on the same day in syndication as it is on WXPN in Phila. If I get any more info, I will post it. Also, on Yahoo groups there is a Zevon group called "Traverse City." There is a compilation of all of Warren's tv appearances being compiled onto DVD and sold as a five DVD set. It includes the Letterman appearance. My husband is purchasing it..check on the list for any details. I'm sorry, I don't know what else it includes, or the charge.
