I've been hoping to get her out of New York and into Boston for the past few years, and it's finally worked out! Frequently compared to singer/songwriters Paul Simon and Aimee Mann, native New Yorker, Jenny Bruce, is a soulfully rooted pop/folk artist. Bruce's intelligent lyrics are borne effortlessly upon her "warm thick orange" voice reminding critics and fans alike of Annie Lennox or a less "whiny" Paula Cole. A 1999 Lilith Fair Talent Search finalist, she has garnered attention from major music industry publications for her work, including Billboard Magazine. You can sample Jenny's music at CD Baby: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/goodgirl http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/goodgirl2 And her web site is: http://www.goodgirl.com/ Now for the details: Sunday, September 7 2003 Join us at 4pm for snacks and drinks Mail yhc@smoe.org for reservations and directions The suggested donation is $10, which all goes to the performer. My house is just 2 blocks away from the Wakefield commuter rail station, and is just a few miles from Route 128, with plenty of on-street parking. We've got central air-conditioning and we're not afraid to use it if it's hot! Mostly, I post about shows I'm going to or wish I were going to, in the Boston area. When I introduce a new artist, I write something about them. Sometimes, I post about shows that aren't music, or that aren't in Boston, and I hope to find the time to write more slightly longer pieces about musicians I want to rave about, even if I'm not about to go see them. Anyway, if you're curious about the music I like to promote, or the shows I'm going to, especially if you live in Boston, take a look: http://www.livejournal.com/users/cosmusic/ If you already have LiveJournal, just add "cosmusic" to your friends list. I promise no more than one post per day. Sometimes I post almost every day, other times I don't. It's about 1-4 posts a week. If you're not on LJ already, you can just bookmark that URL :) -- Cos (Ofer Inbar) -- cos@polyamory.org http://cos.polyamory.org/ -- WBRS (100.1 FM) -- info@wbrs.org http://www.wbrs.org/ "I can't imagine anything other than music that could have created that alchemy. For some unknown reason, it was on Connecticut public tv at 5 am this morning. Thank the gods for TiVo. :) We're watching now -- it's a must-see for all Tori fans, if for no other reason than you can see her absolutely kickass live performance of the absolutely kickass b-side "Tombigbee". One of these millenia, I'll write up something in detail about the Tori shows we saw last weekend, at Jones Beach on Long Island and at the FleetBoston Pavilion in Boston. Both were excellent shows (I think I liked the setlist at Jones Beach a bit better), and now I'm sad that we won't be seeing Tori again for at least another couple years. I know lots of people swore off seeing Tori live a few years ago, but I'm happy to report that her fans seem to have calmed down a bit since then, and even though she doesn't interact with the audience much at all any more, she is still pulling surprises out of her long flowing sleeves most every night, and Jon and Matt are the perfect backing band for her. (It helps, too, that _Scarlet's Walk_ is the best thing she's put out in years.) I was lucky enough to see nine shows in the last year, and I don't regret a single one of them, even the Riverside Church show in New York where the sound was stunningly horrible. Two of my top ten all-time Tori shows were on this tour: Wallingford in October, and Minneapolis at the beginning of this month. Even after all these years, Tori is still able to move me like no other musician can. Not even Happy or Veda can move jaded, cynical old me to tears, but dammit, I'm sitting here watching her sing "China" on Soundstage and it's happening again. It has been discussed somewhat, but I'm always happy to bring it up again! I think it is one incredible record, timeless and understated yet powerful at the same time. Beth Gibbons amazes me by managing to sound so instantly recognisable yet so different from Portishead. This is a classic record, but I must admit I'm especially fond of the first two tracks, "Mysteries" and "Tom the model"... "Mysteries" especially coming close to being a perfect song, if such thing is possible. I wonder if Portishead are ever going to make another record? - --------------------------------------------------------------------- "Grrr...Arrgh!" -- Mutant - -- 11:58:19 up 35 days, 1:09, 4 users, load average: 0.51, 1.11, 1.33-- ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V9 #245 **************************
