Subject: Avalanche This is going to be nothing more than a rough, "first impressions" kinda thing: I cannot claim to be one of those who, upon listening to Thea for the first time, was immediately won over and recognised a star in the making. My experience with her has been far more gradual, far more insiduous, and it is was only upon getting "Songs from the Gutter", which sent me back to "Rules for Jokers" for comparison, and from actually seeing her at the Water Rats, that I was finally, totally won over into the camps of the fanatics. As I've mentioned, the single from her new album was released last week and, thanks to an energetic campaign by her management and fans, it managed to make it to #35 in the charts. If you had any idea how awful the charts are over here, how full of teen bands and high-budget pap, you'd know what a feat this is: an independent label having a top 40 single! Wow! Mike Gray has already talked about the single and its various b-sides. As for the album....? Well, like I said, first impressions: I had expected something more electric, guitar and loop-driven, along the lines of "Songs from the Gutter". Instead, this harkens back (as Mike noticed about the singles) to the more acoustic feel of "Rules for Jokers", and is no worse for that. Sure, it's more "business as usual", but the intelligence and commitment behind each song cannot be denied. There are times, listening to it, that I wish for the rougher sound of SftG, but each songs works its way under the skin and...and stays there. You can't fight the awesome, heartbreaking beauty of songs like "The Cracks" and "God Knows", the latter being a particularly pernicious earworm, which will have you gazing up to the heavens on some starlit night, your heart in your mouth and tears in your eyes. The more straight-ahead rock(ish) of "Mainstream" worked, I felt, better live, where it was delivered with such fervor and energy. On disc, it's a far more restrained affair, and its musical debt to Dylan becomes more obvious. It's still an impressive, blistering song, but I've been spoilt by hearing the live version first. The litmus test, for me, however is always the "Replay" one. Having heard it once, do I want to hear it again? Today? Tomorrow? So many times I'll hear an album for the first time and, once finished, feel I've had the measure of it and decide to come back to it tomorrow. In the days of vinyl, I remember not even making it to the second side of some albums. A disc has something special if I listen to it again, right away -- I listened to Little Earthquakes four times in one day when it first came out. Avalanche passes. As soon as it finished, I put it back on. When that had finished, I put it back on again. Despite the fact that we're currently crawling with visitors, I've managed to sneak a couple of listens to it every day since I got it, and am listening to it now. It's on its way to becoming my fave cd of the year and I cannot recommend it highly enough. One for every ecto, one for every person who values good, intelligent, heartfelt music. Come and get it. adam k. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Aug 2003 13:16:21 +0100 From: "Adam K." I for one LOVE it. I especially like the song "In Parentheses". It sticks with me for days. I wake up in the middle of the night with it running through my head (kind of bugging me how actually, it's been a week). But she's a very talented woman, in my opinion. I played the CD for a few friends (separately from each other) and they both said "Sounds like Tori". And I guess she does. But because I listen to so much 'girl and piano' they start to distinguish themselves from each other. If Tori was the only female piano player I'd ever heard, I'd say she's right on, but my "collection (in my head)" is so large that I don't immediately see it. It's well worth it if you get a chance to pick it up. ~Amy Producer - www.collectedsounds.com A Guide to Women in Music > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-ecto@smoe.org [mailto:owner-ecto@smoe.org]On > Behalf Of Anna > maria stjdrnell > Sent: Wednesday, August 13, 2003 7:57 AM > To: ecto@smoe.org > Subject: charlotte > > > hi.. > what do you all think of charlotte martin's new ep? > anna maria > np-daughter darling-sweet shadows > nr-tanith lee-eva fairdeath > ps..don't vote arnold! > > __________________________________ > Do you Yahoo!? > Yahoo! If I put an audio or data CD in the drives, it spins and tries to boot up, but the system won't let it load. I've tried several things that people have suggested, but none of them have worked. I'm using Windows 98SE with AWARD BIOS. Has anyone ever run into this? Last question - do you think there is something messed up in the BIOS or maybe the battery needs replacement? The clock and date are perfect. This all started about a month ago when I loaded McAfee virus program. (Since then, I have uninstalled McAfee and took it completely off my system) Any help would be appreciated, thanks, tom ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Aug 2003 19:15:47 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: Happy at RAINN 2003 Hi, Ken reported: >Just wanted to let you know that HR will be doing the RAINN benefit at The >Point in Bryn Mawr, PA. And JeffW, for pinging me on AIM (during the work day, no less!) with a list of all the stuff he's bought on CD Baby recently. I managed to restrain myself, so today's order consists merely of: 1 of: MCKINLEY: goner 1 of: LISA CERBONE: ordinary days 1 of: DAUGHTER DARLING: sweet shadows 1 of: TWO LOONS FOR TEA: looking for landmarks 1 of: WILLOW: sweet dark demon 1 of: WILLOW: lovely love 1 of: RACHEL SMITH: the clearing (Yes, Neal and Neile - woj and I really hadn't gotten around to getting that Willow cd yet! Yes, I know we're the lamest of the lame!!) I wish CD Baby had a service whereby once you've placed an order, you can download a copy of the CDs you just bought (or access them via streaming audio) to tide you over until the package arrives. I *really* can't wait to listen to this stuff. I listened to a few other things as well today, but they didn't grab me enough to justify buying them. One of the folks I didn't get around to checking out was Charlotte Martin. I heard a bit of her in JeffW's car recently and it was good, but unlike Amy I'm not at the point where I can listen to a "girl with piano" and not immediately start looking for the similiarities to Tori. When I don't find any -- as was the case with Vienna Teng -- then I know it's a must-buy, but unfortunately those are few and far between. (N.B. CD Baby has a deal on many CDs where you get 20% off if you buy more than 1 of a particular title. If you've got an ecto friend with the same wish list as yours, you might want to combine orders and get the discount where you can!) =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Aug 2003 16:32:27 -0700 (PDT) From: Nadyne Mielke Subject: Re: cd baby is evil meredith wrote: [snip] > I listened to a few other things as well today, but they didn't grab > me enough to justify buying them. Does anyone else have any thoughts on her? I'm going to see her tomorrow night (she's opening for Paul Kelly) and have no idea what I'm in for. /nm ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Aug 2003 23:11:17 -0400 From: Paul Blair Subject: Kristin Hoffmann in NYC and CT This from Kristin Hoffmann: > Hey everyone, > > I hope you are having a great summer!
