Hi folks, The version of this wonderful song I am trying to track down is a fairly obscure one, a cult legend in the UK by someone called Christina. It's basically a pitch black punk version, played at twice the tempo of the original, and though I don't remember it that well, a few bits have stuck in my memory: When she's talking about her boyfriend, it goes something like "we'd go for long walks by hte river and he'd beat me black and blue -and I LOVED it!" And in the last verse, she sneers "I know what you're thinking: 'if that's how she feels, why doesn't she just slash her wrists and shut up?' " It's a memorable take on a classic song, and it was deleted within days of release - presumably for its subversive and bleak tone - and will be fondly remembered by listeners to Annie Nightingale's Sunday night programme on Radio 1, as she used to say it was her favourite record ever, and was about the only DJ who played it. Does anyone else remember this version, and is it available anywhere?? Azeem in (scorchio) London ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Aug 2003 15:41:18 +0100 From: "Adam K." Subject: Thea Gilmore Hi Mike, Thanks for buying the Thea Gilmore single in its first week. This is also the first time (EVER) I've bought a single on its first day of release, purely to give it a shot at the charts. As it is, I just got an e-mail from Sara, Thea's manager, who says it's now at 42, a spit away from the top 40. And, yep, it's beautiful, I agree. I love the first single better, I think, absolutely loving "Lightning Strikes" as I do. The album's due for release next week and, once again, I've broken with my own tradition and have it on order. She's had very good coverage in the Independant on Sunday, and the eminent Ross Fortune interviewed her for Time Out. I don't know if she'll be as big as they keep saying she will, but I'm really looking forward to next Monday. adam k. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 06 Aug 2003 17:07:36 -0400 From: aural gratification Subject: Near- Life Experience Hello Ectos Please excuse the advertisment and promotion, I don't want to abuse the forum. We don't know yet when and with whom the band will be back - yes, Paal Aanensen (bass) has quit the band, so there will possibly be one new member. - -- Yngve ****************************************** * E-mail: onealien@mo.himolde.no ********* * Cell: +47 41330571 ********************* ***** Blessed be!!! ********************** ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Aug 2003 16:51:18 -0500 From: "Mattoon, Melanie" Subject: Bjork at Red Rocks Just wondering if any ectophiles are going to this show in a couple weeks. At that point, of course, there was no furore about her 'selling out' - and I loved the record to pieces, still do. As did my flatmate and my girlfriend. I take it at face value, mind - it isn't Exile In Guyville, but Tori Amos isn't making Little Earthquakes, Sarah McLachlan isn't make Touch, Jewel isn't making Pieces Of You. I think a lot of this is down to a general unwillingness to allow an artist to change from the sound that you got into. I'd also agree that the web based EP is excellent, and a very nice move on her part. My girlfriend thinks some of the tracks sound like Aimee Mann, which makes some sense, considering the producer. On another point, if anyone is interested, Beth Orton has two records coming out. The second is interesting for including tracks from Superpinkmandy, a Japanese only EP. Beth Orton : 1st September (UK) - The Other Side Of Daybreak 1. Ooh Child (Alternate Version) 2. Thinking About Tomorrow (IPG Dub) 3. Ali's Waltz 4. Daybreaker (Four Tet Remix) 5. Bobby Gentry 6. Also (sorry this is a long post) - has anyone come across Claire Holley? http://www.claireholley.com/ - I heard a track on Radio 2 in the UK and was surprised she's slipped under my radar. Is everyone else listening to her already and I've just missed out? Is everyone else listening to her > already and I've just missed out? I mentioned Claire last month, but didn't get any bites then. I saw her open for Vienna Teng. Hadn't heard her before, but thought she put on an excellent show. I picked up her latest CD "Dandelion" and thoroughly enjoy it. Her stuff is Americana-tinged folk-pop. Meaning that sometimes the country aspects get a bit stronger, and sometimes the pop aspects win out. Songs like In My Garden are pure pop. And 6 Miles to McKinney is one of the most infectuous songs I've heard in ages. I highly recommend Claire, both live and on CD. She was also very kind and friendly to chat with. A bit retiring as a stage performer, but in an endearing Aimee Mann-sort of way. I'm really glad to hear that she is being played in the UK! What track did they play? Anyone else? neal np: From Where You Are - Sloan Wainwright ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 06 Aug 2003 15:59:53 -0700 From: "Bill" Subject: Re: OT: Yes / "70s music" On Tue, 05 Aug 2003 16:15:30 -0400, Mark Chapman wrote: >Ahhh ... gotta love those subjective opinions. While acknowledging that there are two sides to every coin, and that opinions are subjective, I must say that I, too, a devoted Yes fan, lost it not with _Tormato_, not even with the musically padded _Tales from Topographic Oceans_, but with the appearance of Trevor Rabin on the scene. Sure, "Owner of a Lonely Heart" is a catchy hit, and the a-capella version of "Leave It" does rock, but that progressive, musically complex sound of Yes simply disappeared beginning with 90125. Of course, this brings us back to the debate of artists having the right, even the necessity, to shift gears and explores other musical forms. But, to me, when I think of Yes, I think of the sounds that began with the eponymous Yes album (with works such as "Harold Land"), that continued with _Fragile_ (with "Heart of The Sunrise"), and that pinnacled with _Close to The Edge_ (with the namesake work). Even the all-stops-pulled, experimental _Relayer_ album had a flavor and a depth never to be known by the Rabin clan. Different strokes for different folks, right? :) - - Bill G. np: David Gray - A new day at midnight. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 Aug 2003 03:04:43 +0200 From: Kjetil Torgrim Homme Subject: Re: heads up: ectofest qua Pepsi Live in Oslo [meredith]: > > Kjetil forwarded: > > > Pepsi Live kl. 17.00: > > EQUICEZ - PAPERBOYS - AMULET - WINTA > > I'm just curious if those Paperboys listed are the ones from Canada?
