CD baby is non-exclusive (selling there doesn't mean you can't sell elsewhere) and Derek & crew are great to deal with. I think it's $30 or $40 to list a CD at CD baby, and a lot of artists who used to be on significant labels (e.g., sugar plastic, thomas dolby) have gone the CD baby route. But while the ectos could chip in financially, I think as the rightsholder, Happy or her designee would have to fill out the actual contract. The I-tunes deal through CD Baby is something else again. It does grant exclusive licenses; it was too restrictive for me. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Aug 2003 11:03:16 -0400 (EDT) From: dmw Subject: LIZ PHAIR (unrelated threads) On Tue, 29 Jul 2003 iflin@speakeasy.net wrote: > after all the talking about the "selling out" of LIZ PHAIR, i didn't > really get a sense that anyone (other maybe one or two people who > mention songs specifically) actually went out and listened to the whole > CD, or bought it and lived with it for awhile. rather it was a lot of on another mailing list i had a long fruitless discussion with a number of folks who apparently listened to it and still thought it was crass/whoring her talent etc. whatever. i don't get it, m'self. i don't think she'll ever equal 'guyville,' but i don't think the current record is embarrassing. it seems to me that other folks have tried to cover up weak material with fancy production without gettting excoriated for it, but whatever, i'm not fighting that fight again. > and finally i am interested to hear if anyone did buy the album, and > then downloaded the online EP, the one that she made for her "old fans" > that had the non pop stuff on it, including her old song HURRICANE CINDY i like that a lot; it was worth the extraordinary effort it took to get it out of windows media format and into something i could listen to. i think the first two songs, in particular, are really good. - -- d. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 05 Aug 2003 17:08:25 +0200 From: Kjetil Torgrim Homme Subject: heads up: ectofest qua Pepsi Live in Oslo on August 13, Rockefeller in Oslo, Norway (no, not Minnesota or Florida) is the venue for the recording of a new music show on Norwegian television. the lineup in the second segment is particularily interesting to ectophiles I think. Pepsi Live kl. 17.00: EQUICEZ - PAPERBOYS - AMULET - WINTA Equicez is one of the most interesting rap bands in Norway currently, Amulet is (reputedly) a solid punk/rock band, regrettably with male vocals. I think I will go to see Equicez, although I'm not into much rap (except Eminem, of course). Pepsi Live kl. 20.00: UNNI WILHELMSEN - BERTINE ZETLITZ - D`SOUND - KATTHULT - EPHEMERA I doubt I have to explain fellow Norwegians who these fine artists are, and some of you foreigners may even know of them. Unni Wilhelmsen is a classic singer/songwriter, with a very pleasant voice and a good ear for writing melodies. http://www.unniwilhelmsen.com Bertine Zetlitz is in the electronica genre. knows how to write a pop song without wallowing in cliches. bouncy, optimistic, cynical or morbid? it varies. http://www.bertine.com D'Sound is a jazz/funk/groove act with wonderful singer Simone in front. http://www.dsound.com/ Katthult is a very interesting Norwegian folk-rock band. I've never seen them live, so this will be exciting. http://www.katthult.no/ Ephemera makes light and inconsequential pop on the outside (as per their name), but there soundscapes can be very addictive. http://www.ephemera.no the show is free, but you need to sign up at Rockefeller's mailing list to be invited. (you print out the e-mail and use as a ticket, and send a confirmation message for tallying purposes to post@rockefeller.no. let me know if you need a copy of the invitation.) - -- Kjetil T. | read and make up your own mind | http://www.cactus48.com/truth.html ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Aug 2003 12:14:38 -0400 (EDT) From: "Larne Pekowsky" Subject: Converting from Windows media format (was LIZ PHAIR) dmw@radix.net wrote: > i like that a lot; it was worth the extraordinary effort it took to get it > out of windows media format and into something i could listen to. For what it's worth, I've had really good luck with mplayer (http://www.mplayerhq.hu/) on my FreeBSD box. Plays streams and files, and can dump to pcm/wav: mplayer -ao pcm -aofile some_file_name [wmf file or url] Then the usual "lame some_file_name" for an mp3 or "oggenc some_file_name" for ogg. - Larne ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 05 Aug 2003 16:15:30 -0400 From: "Mark Chapman" Subject: OT: Yes / "70s music" > From: robert bristow-johnson > Subject: Re: Hi there! Just discovered your newsgroup > Yes (Happy likes Yes a lot also, i really dug them until > the abomination "Tormato" came out and then gave up)... Ahhh ... gotta love those subjective opinions. The "problem" with negative reviews and comments toward bands and music is that the critic can turn unknowing consumers away from good bands and music. I'm a huge Yes fan and have a cd bookcase full of Yes official releases and bootlegs. I personally am in total disagreement with your labelling of the album "Tormato" as an abomination. In fact I think it was and remains a very valid part of their catalogue. Steve Howe and Chris Squire played wonderfully on this one. And if I never hear another Trevor Rabin-penned Yes song again, I won't be depressed. Many, many Yes fans have asked for Yes to play (on recent tours) "On the Silent Wings of Freedom" and other songs from "Tormato." Thus Yes has played "Don't Kill the Whale" and Chris Squire continues to throw bits of "On the Silent Wings of Freedom" into his solo section. I think you're missing out on some good stuff (Keys to Ascension, Magnification), and if you haven't caught them in concert on the past three or four tours, it's your loss. I have a friend who owns a record label devoted to avant-garde and progressive music. He has been in the business for thirty years. He has always acknowledged that he lost interest in Yes in the mid-70s. He went with me to a recent Yes concert (August '02). We had great seats. He was surprised and very impressed by their continued musicianship. ~Mark ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 05 Aug 2003 19:27:30 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: heads up: ectofest qua Pepsi Live in Oslo Hi, Kjetil forwarded: > Pepsi Live kl. 17.00: > EQUICEZ - PAPERBOYS - AMULET - WINTA I'm just curious if those Paperboys listed are the ones from Canada? If so, they are tons of fun live -- they are a great mix of Irish jigs and reels and Cajun/Zydeco, with a bit of Latin flavor thrown in just to keep things interesting. They were much missed at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival last month. =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V9 #222 **************************
