Well, it was a nice dream while it lasted.

As it happens, I was ripping 'out of the box' and the default sample rate was
64kbps. I have since adjusted that upward as I do notice the difference in
quality between that and the CD.

maybe if I preface this post very fast, the embarassing admission about 
what I was doing with my time this evening won't show up so badly ....

tonight I came across the following contradiction on a website where fans 
post running commentaries of what the people on the reality TV show Big 
Brother are doing.  My jaw nearly hit my keyboard.

(basic explanation: on the show, one person weekly wins 'head' of the house 
and gets a gift basket of requested items.)  one of the fans' posts included:

An artist I am reviewing for the Ectophiles Guide, according to her
promos, got her start singing in the Boston subways.  I recall reading,
years ago, that Aimee Mann got her start in the same place; but now I
